I've always thought they were too "proggy" for the classic rock station crowd and too "generic" for folks really into prog rock; falling onto a part of the spectrum where they're only really loved by Rush fans.

It also doesn't help that they switched styles so often. I only like their 1978-81 output, La Villa Strangiato has one of my favourite guitar solos.

I'm 42 and while i have met a couple female Rush fans in my life they were never a big hit with the ladies. They were immensely talented on a technical level but they were normal looking dudes who came off as dorky DnD nerds and never cared about fashion or image. Rush is like AC/DC, all of their songs are the same song but it's a pretty good song so people don't mind. And Rush is generally better when they stop after 3-4 minutes.

They are a crossover band. They blow the minds of dudes who only really listened to classic rock, but compared to all the prog bands that inspired them they're very boring.
