Why can't music theory nerds ever write a good song?
Is it just a problem with academia in general? Like the millions of virtuoso players who can play all this complex stuff but can't write a good three chords and the truth type of song to save their lives?

>go out of your way to find something to be mad at

>take a screenshot and post it here thinking people would care that you're mad

I wasted a lot of money going to Berklee so I can make videos and charts explaining why my shit music is actually good.
Also the State Department send be to places like Central Asia to spread American culture because jazz has always just been an American imperial psyop.

I just wish he made that video primarily focus on how other cultures have their own music theory but he had to make it a culture war instead

From the many years of my life playing music and learning theory on my own time rather than through school, the biggest eureka moment for me was realizing that complex theory is completely fucking useless if you don't know what to do with it. Contemporary Jazz and pretty much 95% of Prog Rock/Metal sounds flat and lifeless, it's technically impressive but it says absolutely fucking nothing.

nigga, being a good songwriter filters out 90% of the musicians population, both theorylets and theory nerds. its not a specific problem only applicable to the theory nerds, its an everyone problem. being able to have good taste and craft a good song is not just something so easily taught. its honestly kinda a you have it or you dont.

>music theory is racist
>but using other cultures' music theory is appropriation/orientalism/stealing da black man's music
I love progressives, they're so clear and uncontradictory when they talk.

I fucking hate music theory, took that shit in highschool and the Ap exam and now I don't know what to do with the credit. It's a big waste of time if you're not going to pursue music.

because creativity and intellectual curiosity and musical training are largely uncorrelated

Theorylets get overly enthusiastic about music theory because they're very insecure. They deny their own innate expression and instead depend on music theory as a sort of cheat sheet to guarantee them "success" on an "academic" level. It is true though, music theory knowledge can make your music more powerful and interesting, as well as being a tool for analyzing the music that you admire. It shouldn't be discarded because NPCs fail to use it effectively. Also music theory is useless without relevant context alongside acoustics, mathematics, psychology, language, rhetoric, phonetics, culture, science of how people move their bodies, etc

I can understand keeping visual art as a class, but the fact that students even have the option to take music classes as part of the main curriculum is unbelievably retarded.

that was the best class I ever took. Such a great springboard for learning jazz and classical.

compared to my other music friends I'm the one that is least stuck in the same realm of sound because I have a backbone of music theory to draw from, also if someone is playing a chord progression I can jam to it with more astute harmony than anyone else I know because I can play in any scale anytime anywhere on the neck. That said writing songs isn't just pulling out some theory I generally just try and find a progression I like sometimes using chords that are in the same scale other times intentionally doing the opposite to get a more unique sound. Helps to know what you're doing with your notes so you can tell when you're playing the exact notes to chords or the 7th note, or doing something like playing a semi chromatic descending chord prog
