he can hit that hard live, and regularly does, but he's renowned for being "sloppy" in a good way (I guess thing animalistic)
But strangely I get the feeling he's obsessed with sounding tight and perfect in the studio so he triggers up.

He's play it all correctly and it probably sounds fine, but the triggers are just produced weird and on top of the overall modern sterile production its biggest crime to me is sounding boring and not very intense.

Those AI music models should really have something done about the drum sound. It doesn't sound like an actual kit, but like layered beats from electronic music. You could say that triggered drums can sound kinda artificial, but usually not to this extent. Plus I don't know whether it's intentional, but the guitar tone always sounds so fucking metallic. In this case it's probably not as jarring, because I guess this is supposed to be industrial metal, but when someone tries to generate e.g. death metal, it can be pretty jarring.

Really my biggest complaint is its just bland and by the numbers. Nutopsy has none of the creativity it used to, and as a drumfga Flo is almost offensively stale.
The overall modern production doesn't help. It doesn't have to be le epic raw and trve prod, but something that doesn't sound like it wants to be a deathcore or architects album would be good.
I also don't rate McGay as a vocalist much especially the shoes he has to fill. He's competent but largely uninteresting and relying on the same old trends.

Yes, the drum sounds definitely could be improved for sure. I've used DAWs with Kvlt Drums and even they sound kinda weird compared to free drumkits that I've found. I use the free version of Suno, so it's maybe better in the newer version(s). I don't really take AI that serious though. For me, if I was to do a proper song, I'd rather do it all myself, or part of a band. AI is a nice distraction though. One prompt and the song is there, and you do get some good results and can generate themes that aren't in the mainstream. Stay tuned for more AI black metal tomorrow if you like that kinda thing. I don't even hate ALL modern Cryptopsy, but they have gotten remarkably stale in nearly every department. Production, drums, vocals, I think the only thing that has survived to some extent is the bass. I like the Tome EPs as they're short so they packed them with "moments" that actually made them stick with me.
It could also just be that they were the first I heard so I wasn't burnt out like I am not. The last 2 albums are some of the most forgettable shit.

The shitpost can claims its people begging for gutturals and shit production, and even if we buy into that false argument, the songwriting is really what's been a significant downgrade.

I'm generally very curious in seeing the progress generative AI makes, so I'd be interested in seeing how it develops further. For the time being it just has all those weird artifacts that make it sound kinda soulless and artificial. But hey, maybe a few years down the line I won't be able to tell the difference. And if someone makes a great album with AI then great. There's of course this "performance" aspect of music, especially technical metal music, that adds to the enjoyment, because when you hear e.g. some crazy fucking solo, then there's some dude actually playing that and that's impressive and adds a lot to my enjoyment. I also think that's pretty dumb, just playing 'what you want' is what all music should be in the first place. But maybe it's just poor ESL wording, I'd think he's referring to how there's a certain intention/spirit behind making 'black metal', and when you have that you can create it how it suits you. That's the common thing that keeps the genre together, between the intricate symphonic BM and the raw noisy BM

I feel like a lot of these new bands I don't like that call themselves 'black metal' adopt the lo-fi sound as an aesthetic thing, and that's it. There's nothing convincingly metal about them, idk why. Maybe not enough genuine anger/angst? Incredibly bitter, hence him being annoyed everyone hated The Unspoken King. Even though the one positive critics took from that album was the drumming.
He seems to always try to cover it up. He did a "drum playalong" once where they just played the song over the top of him so you can't actually hear the live drums and all the comments were "give us the raw audio we love how sloppy he is".

I've been really impressed with it. Been listening more to others tunes on the Suno website lately, and they do all sound unique. Sometimes they sound similar to existing bands (I got great Iron Maiden and Bon Jovi sounding ones awhile back), but other than that, there's some paranormal stuff going on there I think. I don't think it's just machine learning, as it generates something different if you type the exact same prompt in. Gonna go abit /x/ here, but even in the 80s, there was an incident where people were getting messages from an old BBC Micro computer and internet didn't exist back then. Dodleston Whispers is the event and there's a book about it. I think the AI stuff they've released has paranormal aspects in the same way as back then. I think it will improve over time. I just hope the companies don't get greedy. Suno is already gatekeeping v4. I don't want to pay for rights to AI songs. It should be free for everyone. Also governments probably have (or had) very advanced autonomous AI for a very long time.

He'd never be my favourite though just cos there's too many who are more technical or more creative or both.

It's hard to place my finger on why I like his drumming so much. E.g. let's compare him to George Kollias. Kollias is tighter, but I don't know, his drumming just doesn't do it for me. It definitely complements Nile's music very well, but it's not a big part of why I enjoy Nile in the same way that Mounier's drumming is a big part of why I enjoy Cryptopsy.

Well I get early on where it sounds creative, flows really well, and he uses the hi-hat in fills way more and really creatively.

There are fills he plays there that are either improvised or just him changing it up from the old. But even then he forgets to turn on the snare for half of it lel

He WAS really good. I still like some very small specific bits of the modern albums but it feels like all of his fills and rhythms are incredibly standard. The ability isn't lost, the flair is.

I have Reaper and Ibanez guitar and Kvlt Drums and VSTs etc. AI is fun to use though.
