How do you guys feel about effects?
I want to stick to a natural/pure sound and use only overdrives, but on the other hand, I was completely blown away by the weird guitar effects/noises that Todd made on Glassjaw's Worship and Tribute back when I first heard it in the early/mid 00s.

Reverb is a minimum. Many couple if with a short delay as part of their always-on tone. A boost and compressor should also be on your board. These things tighten up your sound without making it "wet" or effected.
A lot of people at least some amount of modulation, depending on the situation, all of which make your sound larger. A chorus is usually a minimum to at least have available. Flange, phaser, tremolo and univibe are all good options as well.
Used in subtle combination, many effects can be used to add depth, space and movement to your tone without things sounding wildly un-guitar like.
But of course, you can always turn all the knobs up high and get some crazy Pink Floyd or Robin Trower-ish psychadelic and shoegaze shit.

I can see where you're coming from; I would say Tricot pulled it off in Potage
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rZWdolJfgk
Reverb is a tough one. If recording direct in, it makes sense to me. I would prefer a natural room sound otherwise.
100% with you on the compressor; I would add EQ as another essential one.

Depends on how you're mic'ing. Room mics aren't the best for mic'ing instruments and instrument mics aren't great for capturing natural reverb.
But within a recording context there's a million different ways you could handle this, even with a simple patch.

On bass it just happens naturally and I don't think about it much because I'm only responsible for one string or note at a time. Having to play multiple strings and mute multiple strings is crazy. Once I learn this and how to play chords with my big ass hands, I'll win at life.

Try to listening for it to create a percussive tone in your playing since you are familiar with bass. It will help you stay in rhythm. A pick scraping against muted strings behind the chord/note you're picking can add a dimension to your playing as well. Its something everyone learns how to do naturally over time. You'll find the most comfortable way of doing so and will never think about it again.

mt15 is awesome. It does mesa better than my old mesa. I think tiny terror is 10 years outdated at this point. There are really no features. Monoprice is a generation of improvements ahead of that ripped right off of laney, even though the 15 is a small combo. The peavey mini heads are improvements on their larger older counterparts. The mini valveking is a lot better than the original vk. The original classics felt like they were going to melt the controls and you could cook food on the faceplate. They sounded like it too, just great. I don't know what they did to the classic MH jamming all that into a smaller box. Placing the tubes above rather than below obviously.

There's only so much you can do, I guess. Martin is so old that they basically have dibs on the most generic headstock. Gibson and Gretsch kind of come in second with classic looks, but a little ornamented. Fender's way to recognizable to be imitated (and even, the Tele headstock is weird).
I don't think Ibanez is bad, for the type of guitars they are.

You turn the tone knob all the way down and it's great for chill grooves, all the way up it is a sharper sizzle-like sound. Turn your guitars tone knob all the way down and adjust for taste. A sound the can be utilized by skilled artists (such as John Frusciante, Kurdt Cobain, or Jerry Garcia). Boss really did it right with this one. Pair it with a ProCo Rat (used historically by David Gilmour), when you want heavy metal/sludge riffs.

All modes and scales are the same shape (not counting altered scales like harmonic minor). It is the context. For instance an Em pentatonic can be played over an Em chord, but also a Bm chord. But the E minor scale with all 7 notes can also be played over a B minor chord. But not all notes in the E minor scale are in the B minor scale, however every note of the B minor CHORD is contained in the E minor scale. Just as every note in the E minor chord is contained in the B minor scale. To make sense of this find out the major 7th and minor 7th chords in a scale. For instance B minor, the G and D can be major 7ths. In E minor it would be the C and G. Also the dominant 7 of the key provides context, for there is only one per key. In B minor it is A7, in E minor it is D7. The dominant chord contains the notes of the diminished triad of the key, with a fourth note. An A7 is A-C#-E-G. C#dim is C#-E-G. The half steps and seventh chords shape the context. But you can always change key or scale, or tempo whenever you want without reason. But if you know these things you can interact with them even while soloing without thinking. Being aware of the notes of the open strings and how they relate to the key you are in is very useful. Playing in a key that includes the open notes within it allows you to always be able to play an in key note. This is very useful for rhythm playing. Knowing the 0 and 12th fret are always available on any string gives you options.

Another thing is each key contains three minor pentatonic boxes. In B minor it is E, F#, and B. In E minor it would be E, A, B. Which happen to be the root notes of the minor chords of the scale. So any time you play a minor chord you can jump to pentatonic riffs any time. Melding them together until you are not jumping anymore. And using open drone notes at times throughout. It's nice in funk playing to be able to play a riff and be able to move it three different places and keep the same pattern.

They’re smaller but not really that much smaller. I took some measurements
Strat:
>39” overall height
>15 3/4” tall body bottom to neck heel
>9” wide body at the waist
>1 7/8” thick body
Mustang:
>40” overall height
>16 7/8” tall body bottom to neck heel
>8 1/2” wide body at the waist
>1 1/2” thick body
Super Sonic (don’t have a Jag but this is basically just an upside down Jag with different hardware and electronics):
>39 3/4” overall height
>16” tall body bottom to neck heel
>8 1/2” wide body at the waist
>1 7/8” thick body
Mustangs are lighter cuz they’re thinner and earlier ones were poplar (lighter wood, went to ash in the 70s and those are heavy), but Jags are in general the heaviest production Fender even though they’re a shorter scale cuz they’ve got more electronics and chrome. It’s a noticeable difference in feel going between the scale lengths but size wise they feel more similar than different (Super Sonic/Jag/JM body feels bigger than a Strat when playing, Mustang feels lighter but not too much smaller)

My problem is that I can read this but I'm still getting to the part where all of this is intrinsic knowledge, and to get there it will require a lot of memorization with scales which is where I'd been stuck trying to know what is and isn't just another mode of another existing scale (yes they're all modes of c major with a different starting position, but some are plainly the same series of modes just one fret up).

From what I've seen dudes on youtube describe wiring quality is roughly the same, squier still uses actual switches instead of PCB switches which fender does, and the only real thing holding you back is pickup quality, but some pickups (squier wide-range knockoffs) are within the ball park of the real fenders and you can skip a pickup swap

This is a start, I have scottie's chart. I'm trying to know the major fretboard-wide scale patterns to start with instead of finishing one scale then going to another and finding out it's c major by another name.

At this point I'm close to just trying to memorize every note on the fretboard and going from there.

The Bigsby on my LP stays in tune even when I go crazy on it. I think it comes down to the bridge. Instead of the strings moving over the saddles my whole bridge gently rocks back and forth on the post. That means it never binds up, and it can simply return back to zero. It's better than the rolling bridge I've tried, too.

Nah, it boggles my mind, too. The only time it pulls out of tune is if the bridge doesn't quite settle to zero, but it's fixed if I just slap the Bigsby arm once.
I've got a softer spring coming in that should solve that anyways.
