Yeah it's in a weird spot. Songwriting is nowhere near as adventurous, yet it doesn't have the pop metal appeal of later albums either, plus weird production choices (some solos low in the mix, same producer as Jester Race yet you wouldn't know it with it sounding relatively flat).
I thought I'd revisit the album another time to give it a fair shake and listen for any sleeper gems, but I'm just more disappointed. It's like they streamlined the fuck out of their music to have easier songs to play live.

i think it was a stroke of luck that Sabbath was the first band with this sound at the right time and was successful in cornering the market for that sound becoming THE band for it. it was also a risky sound to take as a new band as it was still new territory and seen as satanic by christians (virtually everyone) at the time, not good for a new band tryna make it big. it was just easier to copy other successful rock at the time.

Mitochondrion are instrumentally light years beyond Teitanblood with a load of polyphony from split guitars, but their main problem is that the absolutely trash 0DR "dense" production combined with the talentless vocalist mean that after a few minutes you have ear fatigue and it begins to feel monotonous.

NSK and a proper producer would turn Mitochondrion into something I would include into my spam portfolio. They are talented instrumentally, its just a shame they shoot themselves in the foot like they do. Same thing to a lesser degree with Abyssal.
