I don't hate it, but let's me honest, it's the worst one in the Rubber Soul to Abbey Road run.

If Pepper had Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, and one of the other 67 singles it would undoubtedly be the best album ever
Even without them, it is super strong

Pet Sounds could be played live by a large band but Sgt Pepper has all kinds of kooky phased reverse tape shit that the stuckist types don't like. I had old friends like this they usually liked the Stones batter (but also hated their satanic majesty)

I agree with you. I guess it has historical value because it was an early example of "studio as an instrument". I've never been much of a fan of the album honestly.

For me, it isn't even that I hate this album or the Beatles. It's that it leaves me cold. I have nearly no reaction to almost any Beatles record. The only thing that moves me a little is the sound of Harrison's 12 string on the A Hard Days Night album. I love that sound. The album itself, again, no reaction from me. But actively hating this album is mostly stupid and fake, yes.

Something that always confused me about Pepper, even when it was still part of the zeitgeist to say "This is the greatest album of all time", people didn't really have much to say about the songs, individually. I'd never even heard *of* stuff like Fixing a Hole or Lovely Rita till actually listening of. Of course that probably enhanced the experience too, since it was the first time my teeny bopper ears notice song transitions and hard panning

With A Little Help From My Friends
Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds
Getting Better
When I'm Sixy Four
A Day In The Life

All are classic Beatles songs outside the context of the album and common entry points into the band. Lovely Rita and the title track also fondly talked about in music circles even if they don't have the same kind of wide-mainstream success (as much as a Beatles song can lack mainstream success). Any classic album is going to have a few songs on it most people aren't familiar with, but Sgt. Pepper actually has a pretty low ratio in that regard.
