his mistake is thinking that anyone cares. he hasn't grasped that zoomers are entirely commercialised and corporatised. they barely have any concept of art, their baseline is that everything is a product, a consumer choice rather than an emotional or intellectual exercise, and the fact that everything in their lives is designed and produced to manipulate them into spending money isnt dystopian or even off putting to them, its all theyve ever known

Rick gives extremely generalized statements in the video. He's saying Jack Antonoff is a professional songwriter when his obviously a producer and gets credits because he makes instrumentals, not lyrics. He also says he was never in a popular group when Fun was pretty successful. They just broke up after 1 album.

In large parts. The Beatles were one of the main reasons that bands needed to write their own music and play their own instruments, they set the template for that form. Previously bands were more like modern boy bands.
"The Beatles are, like, the first boy band" is a common motto of midwits everywhere. It's retarded

This has been true since Boomers. Rick only knows this because he was former professor and music producer. Rick himself wrote or ghost wrote a lot songs for the buttrock bands he produced, like Shinedown and Scott Stapp (but he also produced good song writers like Owen Beverly). Even most bands are the vision of one person in the group, like Jimmy Page doing 90% of the work in Led Zeppelin. Most musicians, even good ones, like Slash or Eddie Van Halen can only write their parts and are not capable of arranging or putting whole songs together. It's why each line-up of Van Halen sounds radically different despite only changing the singer, and why Velvet Revolver only worked due to Scott Weiland.

The singer songwriter era (circa 1960s-1990s) was a blip in the history of music. Music has historically been compartmentalized into writers and performers. I guess the big difference now is that audiences are really, really stupid and think popstars write their own music and aren't really aware or appreciative of what's going on behind the curtain. Back in the day, if someone saw Tosca, they would know that the person to thank for its creation was Pucci, not the opera singers. Pop music isn't really music anymore. It's idol worship.

Yes but ultimately nobody really knows if she does all the work or if Sabrina did a lot or nothing at all. Rick just assumes that Amy did everything because he assumes all pop stars just show up and sing. Ive watched interviews with Jack and he says that the 3 of them are in the room together coming up with ideas so i'm inclined to believe that Sabrina does come up with a good amount on her own or adds a lot of her own ideas.

coming up with the sound is seperate from coming up with melodies and lyrics. Usually in pop the producer does the instrumentals and another songwriter and/or the singer does lyrics.

Why is writing lyrics more prestigious than writing the music? 95% of people don't even listen to lyrics, they listen to the melodies.
Yet being responsible for what people are actually listening to is barely noteworthy, but the person who adds the words to it - usually banal shit like "ooh baby yeah you broke my heart but now I'm stronger" is considered the important one in the process.

The industry standard is the "Beyonce" method where she add a word or changes a phrase so she gets song writing credit. This happens 99% of the time.

>>126817339
Because producers in the 60s realized they could make money by getting (stealing) song writing credit by simply adding a word to a song. They lobbied for copyright law to only consider lyrics and melody "the song". It's stupid but someone could come up with a guitar solo on a track and never get songwriting credit, but some dipshit who adds one word to a track can get credit. It has always been a huge scam.

Yeah you can literally steal someone's guitar solo or drum fill note for note and beat for beat because guitar solos and drum fills aren't considered the "main" melody of a song. This paradigm is getting more and more retarded as pop music becomes more and more generic. Songwriting is basically superfluous now, which is why people respect producers and arrangers are more respected in the industry than songwriters nowadays. It's how Taylor Swift has been getting away with writing the same fucking melody for almost 20 years, the difference is the arrangement and production.

I wouldn't say it's that high. It is common as rick says that artists will demand credit otherwise they don't record the song and writers don't get paid then, but there are still some pop-stars who do contribute a lot. It's just impossible to know who since everything is private between the writers and artists.
