I did a quick run through NIN's discography and this was the only one I found to be insufferable. The Hand That Feeds was fine, the rest almost put me to sleep.

This album absolutely did not deserve the hate it got.
Yeah it's the weakest in his discography but it has some great tracks. The entire 2nd half of the album is so good too.
Also songs like 'You Know What You Are,' 'The Collector,' and 'Beside You In Time' are way better live.

Actually yeah I agree with that now that I think about it. I loved it when it came out, but it feels a lot more like an EP or just some unreleased tracks than a proper NIN album, and listening to it nowadays I realize there are only like 2 songs I really like.

The words I'd use to describe 'With Teeth' are easy listening, atmospheric, and somewhat melancholic overall. It's not necessarily catchy but with the first song off of 'the downward spiral' - 'I do not want this' it starts off pretty explosive and groovy. High energy. Those distorted drums are delicious, great vocals too, love it.

https://youtu.be/EH1xyGXZyTg so good
https://youtu.be/pJwt9qJb6Sw

I've only heard a little about Trent Reznor, I know he did the Quake OST which was well received, everything I've heard so far makes me think he's some sort of genius. I'm learning music theory and can tell from what little I know that he must be a master. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1SsBMsauvE&t=452s

TDS > WT easily. It's a lot heavier and catchier, I can see why some may say it's bland, it's too 'ambient' to have that bite. Even the Hurt cover is great, was about to skip it but it too has great production and singing.

It opens the door to new bands, because there could also be Five Inch Nails, who go by FIN, and obviously they'd have to really bring the house down, like I just think that's an awesome concept, it sort of opens up the haunted house of the concept, you know I just think it would completely be true to Trent's vision

You might be interested in checking out Foetus and Coil. They were two older industrial acts who did a lot of remixes for NIN around the TDS/Broken era and to my knowledge had quite an influence on Trent's sound. Both acts have evolved into stranger more experimental territory in the past decades, but their outputs in the 80's are top notch.
Foetus especially is incredibly unique. A one-man act who was basically the originator of modern industrial rock, combined industrial beats with super manic jazz and punk, now he does soundtracks for stuff like Archer and Venture Bros. Definitely an influence on the unhinged noisy parts of TDS.

nine inch nails' best material is on Broken, but it's only an EP so disappointingly short, not even 20 minutes if you take out the covers and instrumental filler
fragile and the downward spiral best albums but any NIN album is at least good
