What I mean is Bowie sang in a multitude of different voices depending on which part of his career you're looking at. Some of which were quite 'put on' sounding, you can hear how he was singing in the Young Americans era compared to Super Creeps (where he was trying different things with his vocals even more)

Some of it sounds like he's putting on some kind of Vaudevillian style but I don't think it's a one note gimmick any more than other singers using different vocal styles.
Usually people seem to believe his raspyness is fake, I don't buy that at all, I think he probably put on back in the 70s when he didn't naturally have an old man's voice but his voice very clearly started sounding that way after a while, likely from constantly singing in that 'wrong' way in concert for years.
For example I don't hear much forced or non legit in this one, listen to how he sounds when he's talking at the start
