Tim [Sire, 1985]
No songwriter in memory matches Paul Westerberg's artful artlessness, the impression he creates of plumbing his heart as he goes along. Statements like "Hold My Life" and "Bastards of Young" are pretty grand when you think about it, but you don't notice in the offhand context of the tastelessly amorous "Kiss Me on the Bus" or the tastelessly resentful "Waitress in the Sky." So far Westerberg hasn't been touched by the pretension and mere craft that seem to be inevitable side effects of such a gift, and I see no reason to anticipate that he will be. With a band this there, presence is all. A-

Sounds like plastic to me. You could always hear the instruments. Remasters are never only addition, and in this case the subtraction is to part of the album's pathos. Alex Chilton helped to produce Left of the Dial, for example, and no matter what your technical proficiency, that's an obviously essential part of the song in every way, and for the band as well. If the remaster is helping more people find this record, then it's fine (but I doubt it's doing that), but for me it's basically worthless.

Yeah that's a full remix. The deluxe edition also includes a new remaster on disc 2. I think the remix is an interesting curiosity, but not the definitive version. They took out much of the very 80s-sounding reverb, which isn't a bad thing, but added modern studio tricks like artificial stereo widening. So, it's far from the Let it Be 2.0 mix that I'd hoped for when I first heard about the project.

Not one of the guys you're responding to, but Tim is technically my favourite Replacements album (listened to it for decades and all-time favourite songs are on it), but picrel has become my favourite to listen to over time. The production is unfortunate for me in the context of this band only on this one album, where I can absolutely hear an edge that was suppressed by the attempt to reach audiences they were never going to reach. Even still, I love the sound, and I really love the songs. (Whether it qualifies as a Replacements album is another thing altogether, as well as All Shook Down, which I've also loved more every year for many years, but I'll leave that alone)

Sorry Ma>hootenanny
Hoot had too many joke songs that felt lame and the material doesn't hold up well against either their energetic and rebellious punk rock stuff to their more thoughtful and heart felt later stuff. It is this meh transition album that doesn't reach any of the highs from either period, it is just there. Imagine if the Beatles' rubber soul had been "love me do" with a sitar in the background. No michelle, no run for your life, no girl, no in my life, just a clear split of before and after with this album in the middle that clearly shows when the band started to experiment but they hadn't quite arrived there.

Achin' to Be, Talent Show, and I Won't are the songs I remember from Don't Tell a Soul. I agree about the production. That'd be a good album to go back to sometime, give it another listen. I think they re-released it a while back and threw a bunch of bonus stuff on it.

I had a copy of All Shook Down for years and never listened to it. For some reason, when a band breaks up, I usually can't stand listening to their last album. I hardly ever enjoy it. I didn't like Terror Twilight, even though I like Pavement a lot. Same with Let It Be, and Synchronicity.

I think you're overthinking it. Hootenanny has some of their best recorded guitar tones and Bob's a psycho on it. It's arguably the last album where Bob and Paul were completely on the same page. It's also the first album that has a vague country tinge on some songs, which Paul would take up differently a little later, and I love the sound they get from it. It's also better to think of it quite a lot more in proximity to a Husker Du album, which I think they clearly had in mind - not copying them but sharing the same space, basically for the last time, and I think it's really great on those terms as well. I also wouldn't give up Within Your Reach, Color Me Impressed, or Treatment Bound for anything in their "mature song" list.

It's definitely worth your time - you can, maybe should, consider it the off-ramp Paul takes into his solo work. That alone makes it worthwhile for someone to check out. I think people can only be really disappointed if they're expecting Let It Be, Tim, etc. (And for my taste, both albums are worth the time for Paul's guitar alone.)

But yeah the LP version is one of the worst ones. The "Tim Version" is my favorite.

It's my favorite Replacements album. It sounds fucking phenomenal, they had it professionally recorded for release at the time; but it never came out for some reason.

I think it has the definitive versions of all the older stuff. Bob really rips on these recordings.
