If it had been bad I would perhaps agree but the fact that it's still emotion-filled poetic music tells us that it was still an honest expression from them and thereby not a sell out (such as that of metallica, etc)

They didn't sell out. This was just the natural progression after Jade Puget joined the band. That Black Sails, Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow run was incredible and they did some great stuff afterwards as well. Jade (and Davey) were too talented and creative to play only hardcore punk their entire lives. Sing the Sorrow was a big jump, mostly because they had the money and resources.

Davey and Jade revisited hardcore with XTRMST also and it was better than early AFI. They're a great duo.

there was basically no precedent for such a move and was a complete leap of faith on their part. in fact it was an even riskier move because the new direction could've ended up alienating their fanbase, which was a genuine concern if you watch the doc they made about the making of the record. they took all of their savings to make that record without any studio interference and got lucky. there's tons of catchy music out there that doesn't blow up the way that record did. really ignorant take on you part

Yes, in the age of Korn and Limp Biscuit, The Middle was such a sure-fire hit. Even if you factor in the poppy-ness of a band like Blink, they did it with winking cynicism towards the mainstream. The Middle was pure earnestness and sincerity, something that was anti everything on the radio at the time. You're judging based on the outcome rather then factoring the actual environment that the album came out in. I'm guessing you didn't actually live through that era. Bleed American was a risky record

"Sweetness" and "The Middle" would have stuck out like sore thumbs on Clarity because they were such a huge leap in their pop sensibilities, it makes sense to save them for an album that was more centered around that new sound they were inevitably headed towards.
Anonymous No.126876664 [Report] >>126876705
>>126876017
that retard doesn't know what he's talking about. Sweetness is the only song that could've potentially been on Clarity, but it was an earlier self produced version that they considered adding to later pressings of the album. Clarity had been shelved for so long by their label that by the time it finally got released they had already been demoing new material but other than the much older Sweetness none of the newer songs were ever considered for that album.

Not that other anon but have either of you read that book Sellout? It covers Jimmy Eat and their Clarity era. Very interesting stuff despite them being the most "boring" band in the book. Puzzle by Biffy Clyro. One of the biggest examples of "band that made weird rock music signs to a major label and waters down their sound in order to get popular". In its defence it's actually quite good. However the albums that came after double down on all the worst parts of it and are subsequently trash.
