lol what an ego
she makes popular electropop, she's not Joni Mitchell

her greatest act was helping Kamala Harris lose the election

speaking of that I remember her taking credit for the album design
haing worked inthe industry, I can GUARANTEE you she had absolutely nothing to do with it.
her team would have been presented with several designs and they would have picked and maybe given some feedback, nothing more.
i hope she's apologized for that.

>lol what an ego
It's absolutely absurd, talk about believing your own hype.
>Of the album cover's colour—which is Pantone 3507C[45][46]—she said that she had noticed that the colour green was heavily oversaturated in the media and fashion, and added: "I wanted to go with an offensive, off-trend shade of green to trigger the idea of something being wrong. I'd like for us to question our expectations of pop culture—why are some things considered good and acceptable, and some things deemed bad? I'm interested in the narratives behind that and I want to provoke people. I'm not doing things to be nice"
If anything she was doing was as confrontational or challenging as she thinks it is, she wouldn't be anywhere near the charts or headlining festivals

That's absolutely retarded man. Same way pro-Palestinians are the majority whereas the establishment supports Israel, exactly the same thing (except this is music and not politics right).
Goddamn stupid to say "if it's successful then it isn't confrontational", what a shallow almost disingenuous thing to say.

this is pure talentless hack cope. you sing and dance on stage to songs primarily written by other people that is itself in reference to pop music from days gone by. how does someone become this delusional when evaluating their own material? you have an ego the size of the moon despite the fact shaking your tits and ass are just as responsible for your careers success as your singing and dancing lmao

Old pop singers didn't have pretensions about who they are. Same with the fans. Old pop fans didn't huff their farts as much as you guys. Every week you all post some utter forgettable bullshit and act like it's some significant cultural "moment" or something. It's disposable garbage, just like the past. >Consider Olivia Rodrigo's approach. She brought out Robert Smith from The Cure, an unexpected blinder. She gushed about Britain, pubs, shouted out Colin the Caterpillar, tied it to her songs, even joked about how her British ex mocked her pronunciation of 'Glas-ton-BERRY' as if a fruit. She swaggered out in Union Jack booty shorts. She had the whole crowd scream at max volume in rage-fuelled catharsis. She connected with us.

>On the same weekend, Pulp had a jet flyover during "Common People" and celebrated a 30th anniversary; Future Islands' frontman was on the edge of tears; the Scissor Sisters brought out Sir Ian McKellen, and so on. Stiff competition.

Charli might not be the best live vocalist (she is decent enough imo), but I saw her live three times and she delivered great shows each time.

Idek why is she responding to these comments. These past 12 months have been her most successful era ever, she should be enjoying it and be above this pointless criticisms.

Especially because the article points out that her set was well received by both the public and critics, and negative comments are just a minority.

I mean for gods sakes, that writer who gave Vroom Vroom a medicore review went on to say years later that she doesn't stand by it and that she likes the project now. Also Brat was the most acclaimed pop album of last year (again for good reason), everyone I saw and heard was falling head over heels for it.

the issue is more that she really can't sing live and it's not an issue of Autotune she's not like Beyonce who has a huge set of pipes i mean she runs out of breath and only sings like a third of the words in a song, and it’s incredibly jarring to hear the live performances with all these empty spaces in between filled by the backing track.

IDG why we’re discussing Charli’s technical ability. Even if she was a top tier vocalist Brat sounds better with auto tune. It’s an artistic choice not a tool she is hiding behind.

Sabrina Carpenter uses live pitch correction in a way that is inteneted to give the impression of no auto tune use. This is so common but no one is an her ass about it the way artist that are far more transparent about the auto tune use like Charli. And yes Sabrina is a great vocalist and I don’t care she uses auto tune just pointing out these people are wildly inconsistent.

These ‘boomer comments’ are just people moralizing their preference for perceived raw vocals because music is product to them not art.

It’s just the rocktards of the world who only to stuff from, like, 1975 and think that autotune is some kind of “cheat” or they’re “fooling you” into thinking you have a good voice. Charli meanwhile is very open about not being a good singer and admits to relying on autotune. The songwriting & composition of the music is more important to her and boomers completely miss the point. A song is a song no matter how it’s made or who it’s made by.

I love going on Rick Beato’s comment sections and calling bullshit on boomers claiming “there’s no talent anymore! Modern music is soulless trash and all sounds the same!” lol ok, boomer.

His heyday was like 50 years ago and his music is not accessible due to the fact that he pulled it off Spotify. If it was 1975 these boomers would be skipping Young and going to see a Cab Calloway show or something.

Charli should stop being terminally online. But Glastonbury boomers have been annoying for decades. One of the places where rockism is very alive and well.

They were upset when Jay-Z headlined. They were mad when SZA headlined last year. Some of them were mad when Beyoncé headlined too.

They somewhat accepted Olivia Rodrigo because she had a guitar and brought out Robert Smith. (I think she genuinely is a Cure fan because she seems to have good taste. But it’s so annoying that she even needed to have that co-sign for some people to take her more seriously.)

Everyone can have their own standards of what a good performance is or not. But the aversion that some people have to pop or rap headliners is likely based in their own biases.

The idea of a Charli XCX song with a traditional live band arrangement and no vocal effects sounds very alien. Like you know exactly what you're up for when you go to her concert, these songs are not meant to be performed that way in the first place.

She’s acting like nobody ever told her that her live performances are bad. I find that very hard to believe.

Charli is a great writer and studio artist. She’s also a good actress and comedian.

But she is truly the worst live performer I’ve ever seen and I’ve probably seen hundreds at this point. I’ve seen her in a big venue and a small venue, and they were the two worst shows I’ve ever seen. (Saw her the second time because of the tour with Troye whose live performances are now worse for having toured with her.)

She barely sings live at all and that would be okay if she did anything on stage other than gyrate spastically into a camera and sometimes swing her arms side to side.

It’s funny that she’s calling this all “Boomer vibes,” because I promise you in 20 years kids will laugh that anyone paid money to see her do this stuff. Also, I’m pretty sure boomers aren’t the ones calling the show cringe and her mid. Maybe they are, but that feels younger, still.

I think the way Charli handled criticism was fairly mature. She has every right to push back considering that there are so many artists nowadays with an "organic" acoustic sound who are nothing but mediocre and uninspired. Just because an artist can sing live with a guitar and mask their messy lives with "heartfelt," poetic lyrics doesn't mean they have the talent or the artistic vision to truly be heralded as one of the greats. With the way authenticity has been commodified, especially with the emergence of social media, it's easy to fall into the boomer maymay that unprocessed vocals with a live band is automatically the pinnacle of authentic human expression. Charli's is being criticized for staying true to herself while other artists are lauded for stealing sounds and aesthetics from far better, but less recognized musicians. It's honestly impressive how Charli, along with AG Cook, SOPHIE, and the PC Music gang, was able to build her own sound and aesthetic from the ground up while most pop girlies nowadays are right-clicking there way into critical acclaim and relevancy.

I think she's fine. I didn't care much for her but was impressed when I saw her at Cochella. Yes she's minimalist on stage but that's her style and it works for her. Some artist will literally just walk on stage, sing, then leave without any audience interaction or anything at all.

The autotune vs the lack of live band are different issues though.

I have no issues with autotune, it’s literally part of the music she has written, but IMO she should consider levelling up to a live band who can perform the songs, it would bring a lot more energy to the entire show if there was that alchemy of a live group performance.

Framing it as ‘boomer’ thing to not want autotune used for musical effect is fair, but framing it as a boomer thing to prefer music performed live is BS. You don’t need guitars and drums to perform live, there were plenty of electronic artists at Glasto performing live with drum machines, synths and samplers. The concept of performing your music live isn’t a boomer thing it's just that you basically cheat the audience out of a real performance.

She literally fucking mimed. There was one point where she stared into the camera and the autotune voice was still playing.

Her miming was awful as well. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe the video and audio was out of sync. Until she addressed the audience and her voice was totally in sync...

Then she confirmed it by looking at the camera and taking a break from miming whilst her voice still continud.

It appears this Brat phase BS means not caring to the extent you won't even bother singing your own songs.

Her songs are not worth the headline slot at all even if she actually sang them.

not sure if the attitude towards Autotune has changed in recent years, but in the early 2000s, it was strongly frowned upon and seen as inauthentic. It's more Gen X and Millennials who drove that rather than boomers, whose pop acts had been using Autotune for years. That pop scene was viewed as too produced and fake, which led to a new generation of female singer-songwriters who had to be perceived as using their own voice and writing their own songs.

Just coming up with a new meme name for something that existed before does not make it something original. She is making electronic dance/pop with heavy use of vocoder/autotune on her vocals. In her defense it’s not the lowbrow EDM dance pop of the David Guetta era of the late 00s/early 10s. It’s fairly creative in terms of rhythm, melody, vocal lines, production and it’s not derivative. But it’s still electronic dance/pop very much in the mould of MIA, Grimes, Lykke Li, Sky Ferreira etc. And all of those wouldn’t exist without a Bjork who literally made the greatest of all time female electronic solo album in 1997.

Im sorry the criticism is totally valid. I can see why she has a large fanbase and her music is fine. Buts shes not this amazing original artist and that glasto performance was woeful. One person, doing the same mediocre dance moves, wandering around aimlessly singing random words (quietly in the mix, with autotune) while the backing track plays. Add some cool strobe lights.

You don’t have to be a boomer to come to that conclusion. We intuitively know what makes a good performance - great live musicianship, powerful, passionate vocal performances, multiple people playing instruments in unison, the bombast of backing dancers and singers. This was just going to a night club. Which is also an enjoyable experience. But don’t call it a good live performance. It objectively wasn’t.

I saw it a lot coming from rockist British boomers and think that if there’s no actual instruments then it isn’t real music. I think this is probably what Charli has also seen.

It happens every time Glastonbury is on over here. The discourse is just full of boomers going on about how rappers and pop singers are not talented, are lip syncing when they clearly aren’t and are only famous because they wear very little clothing etc.

When I go to work on Monday I work in a male dominated industry full of boomer men and I can guarantee I will be hearing non stop about how Charli is not talented because she “had to” use Autotune but she was also somehow lip syncing the whole time.
