Just because an artist can sing live with a guitar and mask their messy lives with "heartfelt," poetic lyrics doesn't mean they have the talent or the artistic vision to truly be heralded as one of the greats. With the way authenticity has been commodified, especially with the emergence of social media, it's easy to fall into the boomer maymay that unprocessed vocals with a live band is automatically the pinnacle of authentic human expression. Charli's is being criticized for staying true to herself while other artists are lauded for stealing sounds and aesthetics from far better, but less recognized musicians. It's honestly impressive how Charli, along with AG Cook, SOPHIE, and the PC Music gang, was able to build her own sound and aesthetic from the ground up while most pop girlies nowadays are right-clicking there way into critical acclaim and relevancy.
