Many of his former bandmates have also said how much they enjoyed and valued the challenge of working with him despite his combative personality. He pushed his musicians to greatness, and those that couldn't take the heat got pushed out of the band. It just depends on the egos and musical approaches involved.

>Regarding his relationship with Robert Fripp, Muir wrote "Fripp was open and believed very much in getting disparate musical elements together ... he seemed to me to be a very good band leader. I think I was a wee bit too much for him, simply because I was so involved in improvisation. He was very much concerned with logic and function, he always worked his solos out before playing them ... For a person like him it was a very admirable creative decision to actually work with somebody like me."
>In summing up his experience with the band, Muir stated "King Crimson was the ideal for me ... I was extremely pleased and I felt completely at home with the Crimson."

How do you define prog?
I'd say abandoning conventional verse chorus (with a single bridge) song structure plays a roll.

The post appears to be a mix of frustration and insults, likely directed at someone for not listening to or appreciating certain types of music, such as classical or jazz. The use of misspellings and slang suggests a strong emotional response, possibly anger or annoyance. Overall, it conveys a sense of disrespect towards the recipient and a dismissive attitude towards their musical preferences.

lets see what some people say about "Freak Out!" (1966)
Review by Finnforest
>"While some continue to insist that Crimson created prog in 1969 it's my opinion that these earlier works are the true conception even if some want to write them off as "just psychedelia" or whatever."
Review by Rune2000
>"This debut album by Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention was quite a revolutionary release for its time and can be considered an important cornerstone of Proto-Prog."
Review by Slartibartfast
>"Forget about The Moody Blues and King Crimson. The first prog album to come out was in 1966."
Review by TCat
>"There are a few hints of progressive rock, even though it wasn't a genre yet,"
and so on

In light of the intricate linguistic hierarchy, one must acknowledge that the moniker "Prog" operates as a truncated version of "Prog Rock," which, in turn, is a diminutive of the more expansive "Progressive Rock." Conversely, the designation "Prog Metal" emerges as a shorthand for "Progressive Metal." Yet, it is imperative to elucidate that the abbreviation "Prog" is solely tethered to "Prog Rock," thereby creating a peculiar dichotomy wherein "Prog" does not extend its abbreviated reach to the realm of "Prog Metal," despite the apparent thematic kinship.

alright I'm with you on this one, it totally didn't need to be more than 15 minutes, unforced error by fripp & co.
>Ladies of the Road
one of the best blues songs I've ever heard, even if the guitar is admittedly not robert's best work.
I feel like by adding shit like Providence or Starless and Bible Black to albums, he tried to recapture the beauty of Moonchild. Obviously none of those are as good as Moonchild but they're still great and thematically-fitting in their own right

same. Most of the time they feel aimless, and not as cohesive or interesting as their best works
honestly, SAAB as a whole album should have taken longer in the studio
the production on it stinks, and this was the band at their creative peak
lots of brilliant ideas in the album don't get the chance to properly shine because they didn't take their time to fully develop them
sounds like a demo album or studio bootleg at times
>the backhalf is so loud and discordant because that's supposed to be the big climax of the album
not quite, it is a live arrangement of a classical piece
it really has a charm, and sounds cool and menacing in the context of the album, but just as the previous examples, it meanders aimlessly, and should have been better worked in the studio
the whole album kind of tried repeating the formula of their debut, which turned it into an underwhelming mess
Cat Food is the best song in there for the single reason of being unique and interesting
>even if the guitar is admittedly not robert's best work.
it's the shittiest part of an otherwise brilliant tune
Fripp disliked the song and lyrics, so it wouldn't be far-fetched to admit he kind of shoehorned that lame lazy solo
>thematically-fitting in their own right
thematically-fitting sure, but not quite as well written or interesting

To be clear i'm talking about "epic" as a style of song. Like ballad or power ballad is a style of song. I'm not using epic as a statement of quality in this context.

Yeah they have a bunch like that.
I dont remember much of salisbury in the context of how it was structured, but the song is interesting because its a 16 minute love song with an actual orchestra and a rock band.

It may be worth noting that uriah heep (along with deep purple and black sabbath) are actually on progarchives.

It really doesn't hold up, it's fine, but the whole "satirical" angle feels misguided when you consider that most of what they "satirize" (aside from "long songs") only applies to a couple of bands, The mockery of long songs is also stupid, as music has always included lengthy pieces, Classical, Jazz, and Folk often feature compositions that exceed 10 minutes. Yet, for some reason, people seem to get upset when it comes to Rock. Musically, it's just average; it's essentially folky dad rock with a flute, regardless, Songs From The Wood is far better and probably their best.

Even if they dont measure up to the earlier albums, they all have some good songs.

Snow Goose and Camel in general are incredibly mediocre. I don't understand the hype behind them. Earthrise is literally their only good song. Everything else is the most boring piece of boring since boring came to boretown.

one of those situations where a band is underrated due to being too popular. Started off doing the typical thing where their 'long songs' were just a series of shorter songs but later became probably one of the best at efficiently integrating their musical ideas into often quite novel structures without becoming directionless virtuoso showpieces. Suspect they had a chip on their shoulder to prove themselves since prog never had the same period of popular and critical success in NA.

I know it's a meme that google is so enshittified that you're better off just searching reddit for what you need, but I never find what I need from reddit either. Either the discourse is too cringe to trudge through or any thread on the topic just died before getting an answer.
