How do chords fit into scales? Or do they not?
Let's say I'm playing A major pentatonic, how would I fit chords into the scale or would the scale only be useful for individual notes?
Sorry if the question comes across as confusing, I'm trying to figure out how some musicians come up with riffs and melodies etc.
If it helps I was focusing on the A major pentatonic because the riffs from Rebel Rebel was written in that an A minor

>>126897976https://www.all-guitar-chords.com/chords/scales
pick a scale and it will highlight chords that work. basically, you just want to use chords that use the same notes as the scale.
>>126897976Any chord from A Major works fine with A pentatonic. That is the entire reason so many people use the pentatonic scale. If you use the entire A major scale there is dissonance with the 4th and 7th over certain chords in major and the 2nd and 6th in minor.
>>126898066Same root note?
I suppose something else I could add to this is how musicians figure out the shapes/finger positions to help play a song based primarily on a scale.
>>126898055yeah I know, I'm new to playing but I'm pulling my hair out trying to get a 'crash course' on how songs are written to sound good. I know people on here will always say do what sounds good but I like to think there's more to it, at least for the MAJORITY of how a song is written because I think playing by ear is something that comes along after you've played for a while.
>>126897017>filtered by one of the best OD's ever madeId like to see what you're playing through. Not as a "gotchya", but it works well in so many positions for varying reasons (and for cheap) Im always surprised when people can't get what they want from them. Drive set to 0, level set to lightly push the preamp, and tone set to taste provides a fantastic mid boost. I also find the clipping to be less harsh than some other OD's for high gain applications. Either way, they are an easily modifiable pedal that are usually one of the most affordable ones in the display case (plus theyre literally everywhere). Are there better OD's out there? Definitely, but the only reason its not raved about is because they aren't scarce, didnt have older versions with "sekrit sauce" components that are out of production making the old ones basically identical to new production (no vintage premium to tack on), and people see a $35 price tag in the used section and their consumer brain instantly categorizes it as inferior to the green boxes sitting next to it for 4 times as much. Its a great OD to throw in front of a fuzz to compress the signal and place it where it needs to be in the mix (thanks mid boost), its great for stacking gain stages, and its yellow like a smiley face because it exists to make you happy. The SD1 is the f150 of overdrive pedals. Its not outstanding in anyway, no one is impressed with you owning one, its never getting stolen, no one is asking to borrow it for studio time, but its a versatile and reliable workhorse that does exactly what it was designed to do. I dont shill for pedals or gear at all here and I usually close the tab when people start arguing about it, but I will 100% die on the hill of the SD1 being one of the best overdrives ever built, and disparaging comments surrounding it are simply the manifestation of character flaws by their author. I say good day, sir, and enjoy this massive (You).
>>126898055>>126898066>>126898127One thing I'm gathering is that alot of songs seem to be written primarily on one scale but they'll basically use multiple positions of the scale.
Does this seem right? Sorry if I sound annoying bringing all this up.
>>126898163Not sure what you mean by positions of a scale. A major pentatonic is A,B,C#,E,F#. Period. Maybe you mean octaves. So yeah you can take those same notes and move them up or down an octave. In fact your pentatonic playing will get boring quickly if you don't do that.
>>126898128>>126898128there is not much method in writing a good riff. and the good riffs come from hours and hours of shitty riffs. eventually something sticks. a lot of the time you'll have a catchy riff but not enough foundation to build a song around it.
https://voca.ro/167OV4SV5Mox
this is a riff i wrote earlier today. i tried to keep it simple. simplicity is the best for riffs. the more complicated they get the harder they are to fit in a musical context.
remember a riff is just one portion of a song.
>>126898163yess they tend to stay in the pentatonic scale and can play lead throughout the neck. a good way to write a riff is to use part of that scale and make a lick then add rhythm parts to the lick
>>126898128Any of the notes in the scale. C major is C D E F G B A, no sharps or flats so it's usually where people start.
Chords in C major will use those notes, e.g. a C major chord is just Cs, Es and Gs.
It gets more complicated than that, flat 5s (lowering the fifth note in the scale, G in the case of C major) or sharps 9s (raising the 9th note, D for C major, it loops after 7) or whatever, but those are the basics.
Youtube is littered with videos about this stuff.
>>126898216>octaves Probably this. By "positions" I mean like up and down the fretboard. Like how on that site you'll have 0-1-2-3-4-5-6 etc positions and they each go along the fretboard, going higher.
>>126898217>one portion of a songYep, I'm trying to focus on the basics first before I branch out into actually creating a song. I figure scales are the foundation of making music on a guitar.
>>126898241I appreciate the insight and taking the time to respond. I'm not going to focus too much on the complexities of it at the moment so I don't get overwhelmed though.
>>126895642there are a lot of older bands always looking for players. i played with a group that just gigged for fun and beer money last year
>>126898278>they each go along the fretboard, going higher.since your newb I'll help you out here before you build bad habits. Going lower is just as important as going higher. That's one giveaway of amateur players they only ever go up.
>>126897602noodle around to a drone noise. try to make something music with only two notes then add one at a time until you get comfortable with how an interval sounds over a tonic drone
my ds1 could kick your ds1's ass full stop
>>126898373>drone noiseWhat is that?
>>126898339>Going lower is just as important as going higherI think I know what you mean and yes I get that, I've looked at a lot of my favorite songs and noticed that they go up and down, it really just depends on the tone of the song and how it fits in with the other instruments/vocals.
>>126898278For positions it's just memorising them. Every position within a scale is a different shape, but the shapes are the same across all the scales, you just move them around.
The full chromatic scale is A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, then back to A.
Position 1 of C minor pentatonic starts at fret 8, with the root note C on the low string.
Position 1 of C# minor pentatonic starts at fret 9, with the root note C# on the low string.
Notice how the shapes are identical, but they moved up a fret.
The same logic carries for all the others. D is 2 notes higher than C, so its first position is 2 frets higher. G is 7 notes higher than C, so its first position is 7 frets higher.
Once you memorise the shapes, and the position of the notes, you can jump to any given position of any given scale.
Not sure if that's what you're actually asking, but hopefully it's helpful for wrapping your head around it.
https://www.all-guitar-chords.com/scales is a great tool for going over these.
>>126898408basically just play a note or chord repeatedly in the background with no rhythm or drum track or anything accompanying it. for example i would play a C note or a Cm7 chord that just repeats on the first beat of every bar and hold it for the whole bar. while that's looping in the background i would practice something over it to see how it sounds together. it's a good way to learn how intervals and scales feel.
>>126898443there should be only one C-3
Now play a solo using C lydian over a B minor
I'll wait.
>>126898443I see what you're saying and that does help.
This is going to sound retarded but I think I answered my own question, what I was asking is figuring out chord shapes to easily play notes on a scale.
I.E. a D chord is the exact same notes played on a D major pentatonic scale.

>>126899103keep the old ibanez, but replace each part one by one until it is the new ibanez
>>126891668 (OP)What's the best and most efficient way to learn guitar? Should it be structured?
>>126899931>best and most efficient way to learn guitartake piano lessons with theory to basic levels of competency then come back
>>126899931depends on your goals. technique is the slowest and hardest thing to build on guitar so if you want to be an instagram wizard it's going to take forever to master every playing and picking style. if you just want to chug power chords and do some boomer solos you could jump right into learning songs. the best universal advice is to rely on your ear and not tabs
>>126899948this is like saying the best way to learn italian is to learn latin to fluency then take italian lessons
Does anyone use 7/8/9 string guitars for anything other than djent and chugga chugga stuff? It'd be interesting to see those extra strings used for jazz or something.
>>126897106Yeah, they're alright. Get one with the Super 58 pickups and you're good, anything cheaper is kind of shit. You could go real quirky with it and get a George Benson model, would work well with what you want to play
>>126893305Glimour mod Strat completely mogs a Tele desu. It can do every sound better.

>>126900604That just good evidence cover up.
>>126899721depends on the class of ibanez. they make high-end stuff too, its just that a lot of people associate them with gio's and entry-level RG's

>>126901247You don't need to count complex time signatures when you have the feel memorized. As you learn to play the song, you'll form note blocks that you memorize like words or phrases.

AHHH the American PRS custom has always been celebrated for its double humbucker. But there is a SE edition manufactured in Indonesia that is inspired by that same Stevensville excellence.
what song should i play to celebrate blue frost gatorade?
Yamaha is killing it right now. Some of the best guitars on the market at a very good price.

we all use quad cortex... trust me, there is nobody dragging a stack on a flight to gig with.
>>126901877agreed. no weenies allowed
>>126901892most bands rent the backline.
I just realized that the bad thing of having a superior non fender stratocaster is that at the end of the day it still is a stratocaster.

Just called my sweetwater rep and told him to order the nano cortex. Simple as. I asked him what would happen when the app doesn't exist and he said to contact neural dsp about it and I'm waiting for a response from neural. What happens when they don't want to spend the resources on making sure the app still exists?

>>126897017Is there even a reason to use these on non-tube amps?
>>126893661get a practice amp like a spark or boss katana, they can be quiet enough. what they don't tell you is that you need studio monitors with DIs and that the latency can be a bitch, no matter how powerful your machine. If you want to play something for someone a digital amp is much more portable. DAWs invite pointless tinkering also
>>126897017Unfortunately if you bought a modern one it won't sound good since its PCB. Buy an older one with the tone components and you'll see.

>>126903032Rosewood makes the tone a little darker and improves the sustain. This is why Fender first made the Jazzmaster with rosewood fretboards to balance out the bright pickups and low sustain. But now you got zoomers buying pau ferro crap and they wonder why it doesn't sound good.
>>126903199I like to use my MIJ JM to play JDM for my gigs at a club that focuses on BDSM
>>126903002I came from using the green reg tortex and dunlop grey nylons but the flows have the thickness and attack but more "give" which makes switching between riffing and strumming chords easier.
I got the oranges after seeing them in the thread but I noticed the tips wear off after about 3 hours of playtime.
I picked up the next step up which are yellow .73s but they don't sweep as nicely doing chords.
How did Leo Fender know about tonewoods?
>>126903294Thinking about the only reason that fenders have bolt-on necks is because leo thought players would just want to order a quickswap replacement after they burned through frets/fret finish lul
>>126903305The idea is good though, I should be able to swap the necks between any two guitars I have and easily buy brand name replacement ones, except for some reason nothing ever fits
>>126903143Great rebrand. I hate the misplaced inlays. I have too many planks, so I posted the jtele to stop my buyfaggotry.
Planks aren't selling like I'd like them to. I gotta stick to electronics.
I want a pick that's this stiff but thinner
>>126903294seriously? they've been wanking over wood since violins in the 1700s probably even older
>>126903516Get ultex ones, they're a little larger than those jazz III tho
I like when they do a blind test with a Stradivarius and a violin from Bobโs Band Shack and no one can tell the difference.
>>126891927>not because of his songwriting>van halen's catalogue is admittedly mid wtf that's one of eddie's main talents aside from guitar playing. can't think of any other guitar player who could've made the entirety of 1984

>>126903032If these are only choices, maple (especially roasted flame maple). Rosewood has so much hollow pores in it I'm starting to develop trypophobia playing it. Maple boards are much nicer feeling. Ebony is also great.
Glossy poly maple board is way better than any roasted shit
Why is theory so frowned upon here? How do you even make a song without using scales/keys?
>>126904307You just fuck around with chord changes and the minor pentatonic until something feels right.
>>126904307You do need to learn scales, but a lot of piano theory doesn't really work because of intervals between strings. On the other hand tunings, chord shapes and voicing constraints are the complex part of playing guitar and piano theory just doesn't address them.
>>126904307its not, they just too dumb to realize "what sounds good" is already theory.
But instead of reading some theory books like a nerd they want to play their instrument and find these things out themselves.
>>126904362momoka san..,,,
>>126904307It's called using what's on the side of your head. You know, the things that made you realize you liked music in the first place? If your first instinct is to pick up a book then theres something very wrong with you. Sure go ahead and use a book to figure out the major scale but after that you don't need it. Hendrix, The Beatles. You think you can make better music with a book?

glossy poly or a satin thats gone shiny n smooth from being played the fuck out of feels way better to play than any new satin finish desu
good nitro isn't sticky and oil finished neck is the best. not making excuses for poly

something like this
>>126904474which sounds relatively "simple" but it takes a lifetime to master
