My sibling started playing guitar, and I was thinking to get one for him for his birthday. I don't know anything about guitars. What's a good one for someone trying to get into rock/metal? A les paul?

ask him because some guitarists hate gibson and some hate fender
if he likes fender and you budget is ~£400 get him one of the squires at that price point

les pauls are big, heavy, expensive, and have intonation problems. I would probably go for a stratocaster if you can find one for a good price, since they're pretty versatile. telecasters are also very good guitars although not really appropriate for metal (although it really depends on what kind of metal he's into. you could definitely play old school stuff like 'sabbath or 'maiden on one). if he's mostly into playing super heavy stuff get him a schecter with active pickups. great guitars and usually not too expensive, especially used. oh, and DO NOT buy a guitar with a 'whammy bar" (often mistakenly called "tremolo" or "term" arms/bars)

The perfect age to start jamming. You should learn what bands he likes and start from their guitar players.

Ibanez GRG131DX perhaps?

yeah Ibanez is not a bad option. make sure to correct everyone's pronunciation to "eebanez" since it's a spanish company.
