People read manga 25 years ago. You could find manga at the local library in my rinky dinky European shithole village 25 years ago. It's not something that zoomers just started enjoying in the 2020s.

Of course it's a hoax. They really fucked up with the album art with the 2010s aesthetics thinking no one would notice. Nothing looked even close to that in the 2000s and I'm sorry but a no name band "from" that era wouldn't be that forward thinking with their album art, it would have resembled the trends of the time

I dunno anon, when the only thing people use to ground it in the 2010s is "muh Death Grips" I can't really take them seriously. Especially since Death Grips are already aesthetically and musically derivative. Makes me think that it's just a bunch of kids who discovered "experimental" music through Death Grips in like the mid 2010s and never really dared to venture outside of that kinda music. The font choice and layout for Death Metal isn't some weird out there thing, it's very late 90s/early 2000s. The only thing setting it apart is that they ripped a picture from a late 90s manga.

Again, I don't know what to think about this story, and don't really care either way, but this isn't the truth. People are not imagining something being decidedly modern about it. Even the original post, from what I recall, assumed it was going to be vaporwave.

Pic related is from 1999. Vaporwave is deliberately meant to invoke nostalgia for a time gone by, plenty of vaporwave artists are specifically channeling the aesthetics of that whole 90s/2000s pre-Myspace era of the internet.

I haven't seen every example in the world and all that, but I saw nothing quite like that before or during my time of playing along. But I repeat, I am on the fence and have no dog in this fight.

literally uses the exact same design motif (albeit mirrored) and essentially the exact same font (though slightly italicized) for "deathgrips/deathmetal". prior to panchiko coming out of nowhere you'd be hard pressed to find a single album or piece of media that resembled the exmilitary album cover. you strike me as a zoomer who wasn't even alive in the late 90s/early 2000s because had you been alive then i think it would be natural for red flags to be raised when looking at that panchiko cover. it just doesn't resemble a single trend from the era

Yeah it does, though something extra. There's something about the arrangement of the text and the use of the image that is suspiciously modern. I've said a thousand times, I'm on the fence, but the album cover is undeniably odd. If it's on the level, it's arguably one of the most interesting album covers in history (retarded or hyperbolic as that sounds).

Correct, this album cover would have been possible in the early 00s. The only odd part to me is that I know of no example where it was. Other examples have a different design ethos that is suggestive of their time. This one fits so snugly into the 2010s that it would ignored in any other context.

Stop moving the goal posts. Having a text layout like that was common among punk stuff, people in the west already liked anime and manga in the 90s. Having a headshot with that generic text layout is not some weird sign of the 2010s.

Show me one from the 00s. The Bastard cover is the most persuasive example so far but not quite the same (and quite familiar to 90s punk covers). I would suspect the closest possible examples would be found in local scenes, especially in the 00s. But I've seen probably countless shitty local album covers, including from my own scene in the 00s, and there is a difference. I'm very open to being persuaded otherwise.
