Well, you're right about Motoread, but Judas Priest started out as a second rate Led Zepplin rip off, and not a very good one at that.
It was only later on that the got good when they decided to stop with all the hippy dippy trippy bullshit, and distort te guitars and play fast.
Even then, they didn't invent metal, though, but they most certainly improved on it.

I think they've left it a few years too late even for a short goodbye performance. There's no way he's actually going to sing live, and there's a real chance that even sitting down miming will finish him off.
