It's called semantic drift.
It's like when a word originally meant something very different but after enough time passed its meaning became something entirely new that is a distortion of the old meaning.
Like the word 'nice' used to mean silly, foolish in medieval times. Then more recently it became 'pleasant'.
So did punk originally mean foolish, stupid, and now it means respectful of tranny rights, brimming with empathee
