I just can't get over the fact that people felt like Black Sabbath couldn't do it and then made the vast majority of acts that performed before them look like total novices. Like seriously they fucking kicked ass.

Black Sabbath [Warner Bros., 1970]
The worst of the counterculture on a plastic platter--bullshit necromancy, drug-impaired reaction time, long solos, everything. They claim to oppose war, but if I don't believe in loving my enemies I don't believe in loving my allies either, and I've been worried something like this was going to happen since the first time I saw a numerology column in an underground newspaper. C-

Paranoid [Warner Bros., 1970]
They do take heavy to undreamt-of extremes, and I suppose I could enjoy them as camp, like a horror movie--the title cut is definitely screamworthy. After all, their audience can't take that Lucifer bit seriously, right? Well, depends on what you mean by serious. Personally, I've always suspected that horror movies catharsized stuff I was too rational to care about in the first place. C-

Master of Reality [Warner Bros., 1971]
As an increasingly regretful spearhead of the great Grand Funk switch, in which critics redefined GFR as a 1971 good old-fashioned rock and roll band even though I've never met a critic (myself included) who actually played the records, I feel entitled to put this in its place. Grand Funk is like an American white blues band of three years ago--dull. Black Sabbath is English--dull and decadent. I don't care how many rebels and incipient groovies are buying. I don't even care if the band members believe in their own Christian/satanist/liberal murk. This is a dim-witted, amoral exploitation. C-

I managed to avoid any serious engagement with Black Sabbath most of my life. Of course it was played all through high school (it was the seventies after all); the "hits" could be heard by anyone, like it or not. In any case, though blues-based rock is not my thing, I can appreciate it when really outside the orbit of the ordinary. Unfortunately, a good amount of this record sounds like a bad joke: "Look how tough and scary we are!" I guess, from all the appreciations, it is in fact taken seriously. I can only imagine these listeners heard it first when 12. If so, fair enough.

In any case, this is rather weak stuff compared to what Zeppelin (on the one side) or Hawkwind (on the other) had already put on record several times. I feel the same way about the follow-up albums, though I must admit I stopped even trying after Sabotage.

Rock music is gate kept by what 14-25 yr olds want.

In the 70's and 80's, that demographic wanted to stick it to authority and celebrate the working class struggle. In 2025, that demographic wants Reddit updootes for being pro-vaxx, the illusion of being the smartest guy online, and a coomer-bait goth mommy to tell them that they're not a total loser for being an unemployed vidya nerd. That's why we have Unleash the Archers, DragonForce, and Anthony Fantano. The supply will always meet the demand, and there is no demand for actual Metal, just faggy loser shit.

That's only true if all youth is brainwashed retards, which NOW they are.

In the 20th century, the "manufacturing teams" CHASED trends, not set them. Heavy metal is the PERFECT example. In the 80's it was nigh-impossible to find Metallica or Anthrax on the radio, let alone MTV. The government NON-STOP tried to shut metal down with PMRC bullshit and Satanic Panic Psy Ops (Ozzy's "Suicide Solution"). But fans back then actually supported artists with FUCKING MONEY so metal bands were still making millions until (((they))) had no choice to recognize and legitimize the genre just to get their fingers in the pie.

You owe Lars Ulrich an apology. When you chose to pirate everything on Napster, you gave away the ability to vote with your wallet, so artists had to turn to shell-corps and SuperPACs to eat food, which is why all art is now Pro-Tranny propaganda. I know it's hard for a zoomer to understand but unlike your favorite YouTuber (aka some 25 yr old kid telling you what life was like in the 1980's) I was there and I remember a time when people were capable of using their own brains without suckling at Mommy Internet's Electric Tits.

We are not doomed. YOU are doomed. And you deserve it. You do NOT deserve metal. Be grateful you get to lick the table scraps, which is basically what yesterday's concert was.

About Napster, yes.
About the drum tones and song lengths on St. Anger, no.
Unfortunately both happened at the same time, and the bad mojo from one hit the other.

The internet was a fucking mistake, because real music is meant to happen LIVE and IRL, not some Netflix show you watch on your cell phone while waiting for your mom to finish cooking dinner. My first Metal concert was Slayer in 92 and I went to it a terrified scrawny 14 yr old and came out of it with a broken nose and my manhood discovered.

Zoomers will NEVER understand what metal truly is.

Line-up was decided by who licked Sharon's boots the most. That's why no Maiden, Megadeth, Slipknot, Mayhem, Nightwish, Judas Priest, etc.

Sharon Osbourne is literally the most hated woman in metal. Basically metal's Yoko Ono but worse bcuz Yoko Ono gave us nudity and weird electronica shitpost albums while Sharon gave us a VH1 reality show and dead Palestinian children.

kek what are you talking about, I supported Lars & Co. plenty some 30 years ago, am not the current youth market, and dont care for any metal this side of the 2000s. Agreed that few outliers gained notoriety to set trends, lucky if its even 5% of them, back when A&R scouts had a job. The rest were pumped out like goyslop. The current state of rock and metal is dire, and all our fav bands growing up are getting old and succumbing to decay. Not gonna pay $350 for a legacy concert ticket nor $100 for a coloured vinyl reissue either. Would rather make my own music I wish to hear.

i don't undertsand. Your tone suggests you're disagreeing with me but everything you say lines up with what I'm saying. I never said goyslop is new, but fans paying money gave us alternatives, and, in the case of Heavy Metal, fan purchasing power could be stronger than the slop.

A lot of the current trends of insanely expensive tickets and merch is just bands (or more likely, their record labels) recouping expenses since no one buys albums anymore and Spotify/iTunes streaming might as well be a legalized version of ThePirateBay for all it contributes.

*shrug*

Every musician I've ever worked with, including some very old and well known names, has told me that high-quality guitarists were literally a dime-per-dozen in the 80's and 90's. Being on a top guitarist list was more about your PR package than actual talent, because there were about a million L.A. dudes who were copying Van Halen and had the skill for it.

Good drummers, supposedly, were the rare find, bcuz they have the most physically demanding jobs and get the least amount of money/attention. Hence the Spinal Tap joke.

I think it was more or less a business marriage. I don't think it's crazy to assume that Ozzy just wanted to do drugs and bang groupies 24/7 so he "married" some girl he liked and/or put a baby in, got bored but, unlike your avg groupie, Sharon had business acumen so they made a very common deal in the art world: I do teenage lizard brain shit while you control everything.

I wonder how much he's regretted that deal. Most artists end up regretting it, but at least she was parasitical enough to not bankrupt him and turn him out like most managers masquerading as spouses do.

I think the funniest bit with Sharon was her being assblasted enough over Dio to pretend that Dio-Sabbath (and other non-Ozzy Sabbath stuff) didn't exist.
To this day if you check the discography on their site, they pretend H&H, Dehumanizer and Mob Rules never existed, alongside their other albums with Ray Gillen and Tony Martin.
https://www.blacksabbath.com/discography.html
Iommi and co straight up had to create a new band to tour under because Sabbath is apparently Ozzy's band, somehow.

I'm not sure who here is old enough to understand just how disillusioning that VH-1 reality show was, followed by OzzFest. In my experience with metal fans around the late-90's and early 00's, the ONLY people who talked about Ozzy Osbourne were Hot Topic shoppers who didn't listen to metal but wanted you to think they did. Most people with Ozzy T-shirts were into shit like VAST and VNV Nation, but couldn't actually name any Ozzy songs besides Iron Man and Crazy Train. Ozzy was also metal's biggest sell-out, but I'll give him a pass I guess because even in the 90's metal was still considered outcast music, the idea of Ozzy on VH-1 was so wild that it seemed like le epic troll until the first episode hit and any true metal fans with a brain said "oh shit, our genre is now officially dead".

If Ozzy invented everything good about metal (press X to doubt) then he also invented everything wrong with it. Being a drug addicted party guy who becomes so apathetic and retarded he literally signs everything away to a Jew who stripmines everything soulful into shekels and turns the entire artform into cheap tourist crap.

I think it's funny because Dio didn't have any actual beef with Ozzy beyond him being a retarded druggie who got kicked out of the band, and he didn't necessarily like the others smoking weed and stuff either, but it's pretty clear that the whole conflict around it was coming from Sharon originally. She just couldn't let the name slip into someone else's hands and that lawsuit sealed it apparently so now only the original lineup is Black Sabbath.
The only time I recall hearing that he acted out in response to Ozzy was during the original reunion, because he felt like the band they were making were suddenly supposed to play second fiddle to Ozzy of all people.

thanks for the backup Anon, but don't worry. I'm old school. I even remember when 4Chan wasn't Reddit 2.0.

I used to drive around for HOURS in my teenage years, passing all the Sam Goody's and Musiclands and Best Buys just so I could find that one dusty stinky record store in the middle of nowhere that actually had a copy of Hell Awaits. Shit, when I was 14 I called about 20 record stores looking for a Megadeth album, ANY Megadeth album that wasn't Countdown, and the only place that had one was a Barnes N Noble two towns away so I had them hold it, and fucking WALKED three hours there, bought Peace Sells, walked three hours back and sat listening to it all night long.

Now days, I think of websites like record stores. If you only go to the low-effort easy to find ones (Reddit, Facebook, 4Chan, etc.) you get pop normie top 40 thoughts. But if you dig, dig, dig for those weird sites, you get the mind blowing stuff.

It's sad that these days people won't even put effort into thinking.

they tried to bust down rock-and-roll in the 50s too

>the ASCAP stablishment tried to lobby Congress to ban R&R records from airplay
>draft Elvis to get rid of him

even before that they tried waging war on jazz, that's why Billie Holiday was persecuted by LEA. but in all cases the fans persevered and supported those scenes anyway

It started back in the late 90s and both parties did it (there are examples of albums like Unleashed that were clearly commissioned by the Bush Administration as agitprop) but Obama then went and of course made it that only Democrat agitprop got funded. Combination of that and pop music generally stagnating since everything has been produced and written by the same 30 or so guys for 20 years.

Most of the cover bands I could miss.
Sabbath was great. I felt emotional when Ozzy clearly tried to get up from his chair, but couldn't.
He's definitely going to pass away sooner rather than later and I'll be as sad about it as I was when Dio passed.
But hey at least he got a very satisfying farewell. That show was about as good as it could have been.
