who had the best sabbath cover?
Metallica didn't do sound great but hole in the sky is a great song choice
also, hail bill ward, FUCKING LEGEND
I just can't get over the fact that people felt like Black Sabbath couldn't do it and then made the vast majority of acts that performed before them look like total novices. Like seriously they fucking kicked ass.

Black Sabbath [Warner Bros., 1970]
The worst of the counterculture on a plastic platter--bullshit necromancy, drug-impaired reaction time, long solos, everything. They claim to oppose war, but if I don't believe in loving my enemies I don't believe in loving my allies either, and I've been worried something like this was going to happen since the first time I saw a numerology column in an underground newspaper. C-
Paranoid [Warner Bros., 1970]
They do take heavy to undreamt-of extremes, and I suppose I could enjoy them as camp, like a horror movie--the title cut is definitely screamworthy. After all, their audience can't take that Lucifer bit seriously, right? Well, depends on what you mean by serious. Personally, I've always suspected that horror movies catharsized stuff I was too rational to care about in the first place. C-
Master of Reality [Warner Bros., 1971]
As an increasingly regretful spearhead of the great Grand Funk switch, in which critics redefined GFR as a 1971 good old-fashioned rock and roll band even though I've never met a critic (myself included) who actually played the records, I feel entitled to put this in its place. Grand Funk is like an American white blues band of three years ago--dull. Black Sabbath is English--dull and decadent. I don't care how many rebels and incipient groovies are buying. I don't even care if the band members believe in their own Christian/satanist/liberal murk. This is a dim-witted, amoral exploitation. C-

I managed to avoid any serious engagement with Black Sabbath most of my life. Of course it was played all through high school (it was the seventies after all); the "hits" could be heard by anyone, like it or not. In any case, though blues-based rock is not my thing, I can appreciate it when really outside the orbit of the ordinary. Unfortunately, a good amount of this record sounds like a bad joke: "Look how tough and scary we are!" I guess, from all the appreciations, it is in fact taken seriously. I can only imagine these listeners heard it first when 12. If so, fair enough.
In any case, this is rather weak stuff compared to what Zeppelin (on the one side) or Hawkwind (on the other) had already put on record several times. I feel the same way about the follow-up albums, though I must admit I stopped even trying after Sabotage.
the next black sabbath gig will feature ozzy in a hospital bed singing through text to speech like hawking
it hurts to see the guy go out like this
>>126945664I'm not listening to that shit, kid.

>>126940475 (OP)Tool, by a country fucking mile. They made it โtheir ownโ, just like they did with No Quarter back in the day. It sounded amazing. Worst cover goes to GnR, 100%. Axl needs to stop singing, in general.

>>126940475 (OP)Tool and it's not even close
>>126945630Rock music is gate kept by what 14-25 yr olds want.
In the 70's and 80's, that demographic wanted to stick it to authority and celebrate the working class struggle. In 2025, that demographic wants Reddit updootes for being pro-vaxx, the illusion of being the smartest guy online, and a coomer-bait goth mommy to tell them that they're not a total loser for being an unemployed vidya nerd. That's why we have Unleash the Archers, DragonForce, and Anthony Fantano. The supply will always meet the demand, and there is no demand for actual Metal, just faggy loser shit.
>>126946007I hate both Jack Black and Fred Durst, but both have much more reason to be there more than the drummers from The FagHot Chili Pooper and Beta-182.
>>126946357scathing but 1000000% correct

>>126946357Youth definitely is king, but behind every trend is a team manufacturing it. Metal definitely is a niche market these days.
>>126946412They did Ozzy set then Black Sabbath set
>>126946385This. Jack Black may be a kids' actor but his music is far more metal in sabbath's lineage than Travis Barkers whiny shitpunk.
>>126941008he's essentially saying sabbath are meatheads who revel in the aesthetic of senseless violence even if they claim otherwise. people don't realise that shitgau is quite the christfag and it bleeds through in some of his weirder moments where he starts to sound like tipper gore
Just watched the Sabbath part. If we're not coping it was actually shit.
Fair play to him for doing it so old and ill, better than I could do in that context, but people were acting like it was objectively a good performance. He sounded like John Fogarty.
>>126940475 (OP)The only covers that didn't sound weak or straight fucking garbage were Slayer's, Tool's and Alice in Chains.
Alice in Chains was decent
Slayer was good and curious
Tool was great and legit interesting
>>126946466That's only true if all youth is brainwashed retards, which NOW they are.
In the 20th century, the "manufacturing teams" CHASED trends, not set them. Heavy metal is the PERFECT example. In the 80's it was nigh-impossible to find Metallica or Anthrax on the radio, let alone MTV. The government NON-STOP tried to shut metal down with PMRC bullshit and Satanic Panic Psy Ops (Ozzy's "Suicide Solution"). But fans back then actually supported artists with FUCKING MONEY so metal bands were still making millions until (((they))) had no choice to recognize and legitimize the genre just to get their fingers in the pie.
You owe Lars Ulrich an apology. When you chose to pirate everything on Napster, you gave away the ability to vote with your wallet, so artists had to turn to shell-corps and SuperPACs to eat food, which is why all art is now Pro-Tranny propaganda. I know it's hard for a zoomer to understand but unlike your favorite YouTuber (aka some 25 yr old kid telling you what life was like in the 1980's) I was there and I remember a time when people were capable of using their own brains without suckling at Mommy Internet's Electric Tits.
We are not doomed. YOU are doomed. And you deserve it. You do NOT deserve metal. Be grateful you get to lick the table scraps, which is basically what yesterday's concert was.
Tool smashed it out of all of them but had a completely flat crowd because it's bongland. Guarantee 95% of the crowd was just there for the instagram clout. Especially the fact girls were present. Women in the UK think imagine dragons are doom metal and prefer to listen exclusively to niggers rapping about fingering fat british cunts in wetherspoons.
>>126946499I hate everything about Jack Black now, but School of Rock and the first Tenacious D album are unironically better at being metal than most modern metal bands are.

Unfortunately both happened at the same time, and the bad mojo from one hit the other.
The internet was a fucking mistake, because real music is meant to happen LIVE and IRL, not some Netflix show you watch on your cell phone while waiting for your mom to finish cooking dinner. My first Metal concert was Slayer in 92 and I went to it a terrified scrawny 14 yr old and came out of it with a broken nose and my manhood discovered.
Zoomers will NEVER understand what metal truly is.

Did anyone cover my favorite black sabbath song, "Symptoms of the Universe"?
Does anyone have a photo or timestamp of when the woman in the audience was fanning herself with a fan that said "it's fucking hot" despite it being 72F in Birmingham? I really need it for shitposting purposes. I think it was within the first two or three hours of the event but I can't find it, it was only a few second shot.
>>126946936Morello's supergroup played the main riff (and failed at it) then three drummers improvised on top of it. That was it.

Sharon Osbourne is literally the most hated woman in metal. Basically metal's Yoko Ono but worse bcuz Yoko Ono gave us nudity and weird electronica shitpost albums while Sharon gave us a VH1 reality show and dead Palestinian children.
>>126946990Good. Hate is where metal begins.
>>126946981Another beautiful thing ruined by communists
>>126946633kek what are you talking about, I supported Lars & Co. plenty some 30 years ago, am not the current youth market, and dont care for any metal this side of the 2000s. Agreed that few outliers gained notoriety to set trends, lucky if its even 5% of them, back when A&R scouts had a job. The rest were pumped out like goyslop. The current state of rock and metal is dire, and all our fav bands growing up are getting old and succumbing to decay. Not gonna pay $350 for a legacy concert ticket nor $100 for a coloured vinyl reissue either. Would rather make my own music I wish to hear.
>>126947032i don't undertsand. Your tone suggests you're disagreeing with me but everything you say lines up with what I'm saying. I never said goyslop is new, but fans paying money gave us alternatives, and, in the case of Heavy Metal, fan purchasing power could be stronger than the slop.
A lot of the current trends of insanely expensive tickets and merch is just bands (or more likely, their record labels) recouping expenses since no one buys albums anymore and Spotify/iTunes streaming might as well be a legalized version of ThePirateBay for all it contributes.

>>126947094She's also incredibly plain for a rich superstar to marry, but that's just bongland dynamics. Every british male celebrity seems to marry a 4/10.
>>126947094*shrug*
Every musician I've ever worked with, including some very old and well known names, has told me that high-quality guitarists were literally a dime-per-dozen in the 80's and 90's. Being on a top guitarist list was more about your PR package than actual talent, because there were about a million L.A. dudes who were copying Van Halen and had the skill for it.
Good drummers, supposedly, were the rare find, bcuz they have the most physically demanding jobs and get the least amount of money/attention. Hence the Spinal Tap joke.
>>126947093I was reading your post also thinking the same thing, though the gloves came off at calling me a zoomer.
Yes, these high ticket prices are a combination of albums not selling like they did due to reasons and the knock-on effect of the post-scamdemic world where everyone is out for their pound of flesh. Its a dire tragedy, and the music suffers.
>>126947146I think it was more or less a business marriage. I don't think it's crazy to assume that Ozzy just wanted to do drugs and bang groupies 24/7 so he "married" some girl he liked and/or put a baby in, got bored but, unlike your avg groupie, Sharon had business acumen so they made a very common deal in the art world: I do teenage lizard brain shit while you control everything.
I wonder how much he's regretted that deal. Most artists end up regretting it, but at least she was parasitical enough to not bankrupt him and turn him out like most managers masquerading as spouses do.
>>126947167This is metal, son. You shouldn't even have worn gloves in the first place. We're not Taylor Swift fans so it's okay to FUCKING FIGHT.

>>126947013I think the funniest bit with Sharon was her being assblasted enough over Dio to pretend that Dio-Sabbath (and other non-Ozzy Sabbath stuff) didn't exist.
To this day if you check the discography on their site, they pretend H&H, Dehumanizer and Mob Rules never existed, alongside their other albums with Ray Gillen and Tony Martin.

Iommi and co straight up had to create a new band to tour under because Sabbath is apparently Ozzy's band, somehow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjG5CspkBuI
>>126947191Also it only mentions them in passing on the history page, only to follow it up with "but the classic lineup can't be beaten", it just has this underlying passive aggressiveness towards anything not associated with Ozzy.

>>126947186So cringe its actually based
>>126947191I'm not sure who here is old enough to understand just how disillusioning that VH-1 reality show was, followed by OzzFest. In my experience with metal fans around the late-90's and early 00's, the ONLY people who talked about Ozzy Osbourne were Hot Topic shoppers who didn't listen to metal but wanted you to think they did. Most people with Ozzy T-shirts were into shit like VAST and VNV Nation, but couldn't actually name any Ozzy songs besides Iron Man and Crazy Train. Ozzy was also metal's biggest sell-out, but I'll give him a pass I guess because even in the 90's metal was still considered outcast music, the idea of Ozzy on VH-1 was so wild that it seemed like le epic troll until the first episode hit and any true metal fans with a brain said "oh shit, our genre is now officially dead".
If Ozzy invented everything good about metal (press X to doubt) then he also invented everything wrong with it. Being a drug addicted party guy who becomes so apathetic and retarded he literally signs everything away to a Jew who stripmines everything soulful into shekels and turns the entire artform into cheap tourist crap.
Joking aside, is the money from this concert going to Israel?
>>126947311>>126947233>>126947292>>126947275obvious samefag is obvious. It's past your bedtime nigger, go back to /aco/ or tonight when I knock up your mom in the Applebee's bathroom I'll tell her about your diaperporn collection.
>>126947321I think it's funny because Dio didn't have any actual beef with Ozzy beyond him being a retarded druggie who got kicked out of the band, and he didn't necessarily like the others smoking weed and stuff either, but it's pretty clear that the whole conflict around it was coming from Sharon originally. She just couldn't let the name slip into someone else's hands and that lawsuit sealed it apparently so now only the original lineup is Black Sabbath.
The only time I recall hearing that he acted out in response to Ozzy was during the original reunion, because he felt like the band they were making were suddenly supposed to play second fiddle to Ozzy of all people.

I used to drive around for HOURS in my teenage years, passing all the Sam Goody's and Musiclands and Best Buys just so I could find that one dusty stinky record store in the middle of nowhere that actually had a copy of Hell Awaits. Shit, when I was 14 I called about 20 record stores looking for a Megadeth album, ANY Megadeth album that wasn't Countdown, and the only place that had one was a Barnes N Noble two towns away so I had them hold it, and fucking WALKED three hours there, bought Peace Sells, walked three hours back and sat listening to it all night long.
Now days, I think of websites like record stores. If you only go to the low-effort easy to find ones (Reddit, Facebook, 4Chan, etc.) you get pop normie top 40 thoughts. But if you dig, dig, dig for those weird sites, you get the mind blowing stuff.
It's sad that these days people won't even put effort into thinking.

>>126947652Tom Morello is the goodest goy going. He's only pro-palestinian to the extent it hurts whites.
>>126940475 (OP)Just watched most of it on youtube. Steven Tyler was especially impressive.

>>126947941>What happened was that USAID bucks were used to turn pop muzic into mouthpiece for rich urban Democrat voting hipsters.This.
>>126948118It started back in the late 90s and both parties did it (there are examples of albums like Unleashed that were clearly commissioned by the Bush Administration as agitprop) but Obama then went and of course made it that only Democrat agitprop got funded. Combination of that and pop music generally stagnating since everything has been produced and written by the same 30 or so guys for 20 years.
>>126948142>Combination of that and pop music generally stagnating since everything has been produced and written by the same 30 or so guys for 20 years. No wonder music was suddenly due to the Bush administration and Obama retarded ass. CIA is definitely to blame as well.
Which, yeah it's been the same guys like Guetta, Antonoff, will.i.am etc making everything since the Bush years and they're tired and very played out now.
>>126948096it was another time, he was black and it was pre-CRA. and he was accused of far far less than Diddy was.
>>126946633>When you chose to pirate everything on Napster, you gave away the ability to vote with your wallet, so artists had to turn to shell-corps and SuperPACs to eat foodThis is one of the dumbest takes I've ever seen. You think anyone ever made bank through digital sales, besides the top 0,1% of artists that already had established careers? The impact of piracy on the livelihood of musicians is massively overestimated.
>>126947191>because Sabbath is apparently Ozzy's band*Sharon's band
>>126947559Sounds good to me, guitar sound was massive for their entire set. Ozzy sounded overall better at this than he did on the last sabbath tour 10 years ago and about 10,000 times better than anyone was expecting him to as well.

Some of these were pretty good covers but you can find better (and worse) covers in the Nativity in Black collections. Sepultura and Type O Negatve stand out in the first set.
>>126948460hi m00t. miss you.
The best cover was Tom Morello All Stars with Steven Tyler singing Whole Lot of Love.

>>126947378he quit the band right before a show because he didn't want Ozzy to do a couple songs with the band after their set
just watched the whole thing on youtube, I'm not exactly a big Tool fan but they were by far the best guest band and played the best cover
>>126940475 (OP)Most of the cover bands I could miss.
Sabbath was great. I felt emotional when Ozzy clearly tried to get up from his chair, but couldn't.
He's definitely going to pass away sooner rather than later and I'll be as sad about it as I was when Dio passed.
But hey at least he got a very satisfying farewell. That show was about as good as it could have been.

BTFO almost every other act
>>126940475 (OP)I thought that Ghost dude's cover of Bark at the Moon was pretty good, but maybe that's just because he picked a song that was actually in his vocal range unlike a lot of the covers.
>>126949737better triggered than a virgin lol
>>126946633You can't really blame zoomers and alphas. You'd be just like them if you were born in the 2000s too. >>126958859oh wait Bill wasn't on drums for the Costa Mesa shows, it was Vinny. he did the one-off reunion with Ozzy there so i thought he did the Halford sets too. oh well the show still kicks ass
>>126946007Hate Jack Black like no one else but the dude has done more to make heavy metal popular to normies than 99% of other acts in the line up.
It was really warranted to have him, too.
>>126947013Judas Priest were invited but couldn't make it due to scheduling conflicts with their tour.
They did record a cover and published it a couple of days before the concer, tho. Technically, they were around as well.
Many acts were invited but peaced out mostly due to scheduling bullshit, Korn singer was supposed to be there, too for example.
in re: the Dio songs
Ozzy of course couldn't sing those even if he wanted to but lots of other more vocally equipped guys like Axl definitely could have pulled it off

>>126956593he's more of a hype man, all the "here comes the pain" and sound effects samples like his scratches are pre-programmed. his job is literally to jump around and be wild on stage, they did use him during the first two records and in the 2000s, but since the 2010s he's literally just pretending to be pressing buttons like a proper dj and instead goes apeshit on stage or on his turntables.
Not a bad gig, only craig had it easier.

Randy Bachman is several years older and still puts on good shows because he was straight edge and never touched the stuff.
>>126959411In keeping with being someone who i've never heard of
>>126959419Bachman-Turner Overdrive? Yeah he was notorious back in the day for opposing drugs and pissed off his bandmates who wanted to get high.
>>126949842At the time Ozzy was basically a joke, he was off-key, impaired and on drugs constantly. Dio said he wouldn't wanna open for a clown and I could understand him. Maybe he'd be more down for it if he were still alive
