most of it (regarding popular musicians) is from constantly going on stage every night and fucking their shit up rather than age, which does play a part, but there's ways to at least not make a voice sound like complete shit when they get old

To what extent can this be managed / prevented? I know that rock stars stereotypically fuck around during their careers and get by on raw ability until they age, but what about other genres. Do trained singers do exercises from year 1 through to year 99 to minimise vocal decline?

Ronnie James Dio sung pretty well for a man nearing 70 years old and dying of cancer

Within the last year I saw both unwound and converge in part out of curiosity to hear what their voices sound like since they both do yelling/screaming vocals and they're both in like their 50s now and surprising they both sounded great..I was especially impressed with with Jacob Bannon since his vocals are so much harsher sounding but he sounded good as ever

unironically Taylor Swift, the original versions of Fearless and Speak Now sound almost grating in comparison to how much better she is now

Have and maintain great vocal technique from the start, don't talk too much and have great genetics (see Glenn Hughes).

He was still far from his heydays. Even though he somehow managed to maintain his voice from its noticeably decline in 1991-1992 to his death.

That's just her technique getting better with practice rather then her just getting older. We're talking about singers who age into 35+ and start to sound worse.

It's depends on genre and style.
Take Madonna for example.
She sounds almost the same now as she did in the 90's.
She doesn't do Xtina vocal acrobatics.
She mostly sings in low register and seldom does any belting that strains or causes damage to her vocal cords.

It's quite amusing to hear a singer's very early recordings when their voice was often very different from how it later evolved. And others like Perry Como were remarkably consistent; his voice changed very little over the years.

mike's funny because he never had any hard parts but he actually sounds terrible now. autotune aside, think something happened with his voice around 2016 cause it's so gravelly now
>inb4 it's age
no, mike's voice is fucked up
>>126952418
same applies to robert smith
sounds the exact same because he never strained or did anything too crazy in his music
>>126953516
morrissey is a case where he actually learned to sing. sounds like he took lessons sometime in the 90s

so does Maynard, for the most part. the secret is not to force yourself to do stuff that hurts over and over again
