Was this one of the biggest flexes in music history?
This literal retard getting major bands to drop everything to come celebrate him in his hometown?
Could any other performer have got that huge of a response?
Only one I can think is that Bob Dylan 25th or 30th Anniversary show that had a lot of big acts.
Could anyone else currently pull off such a huge tribute concert as Ozzy/Sabbath?
Paul McCartney? Who could he get?
Led Zepplin? Who could they get?

i'm actually curious, could anyone pull off that huge of a tribute concert?
was sabbath and ozzy (who i was never particularly a fan of, btw) the most influential musicians in rock history?
could the last surviving member, paul mccartney of what is generally considered most influential band get that many huge acts to show up?
who would they be?

Iron Maiden could potentially do a huge send-off event if they decided to, however it wouldn't be as mainstream, both in the acts involved and in the publicity it would get. I don't think they'd even aim for such mainstream attention in the first place.

Metallica definitelly has the pull to organize something on par with this if they decide to retire. However, given that time is ticking and many of the biggest classic names are retiring or actually dying out, I don't know if by the time Metallica retire there will be enough household name acts to match this.

I recon it might have been. Sabbath are considered to be the pioneers of the metal genre, which has branched out into a million different things.
For how old they are, they're a "your favourite band's favourite band's favourite band". The domino effect they've had is pretty ridiculous.

As for who could do the same, I'm not too sure desu... There are a lot of genre defining musicians but none of them have the same pull or clout.
Like, Kraftwerk are similar pioneers from the same time but I doubt that Bartos or Flur would ever play with them again. I'm also unsure if they could fill a football stadium these days. Sabbath has modern appeal whereas other old bands are very dated sounding.

Aside from retiring and dying, I think another ball in the court is whether or not the musicians hate each other. Sabbath obviously buried some hatchets but a lot of similar bands have feuds that will likely die along with the members themselves. All of that, and no other band has had the same media circus surrounding it that Ozzy had.

Agreed that there should've been Maiden and Priest. Not sure why Priest wasn't there because they get along. But Bruce and Sharon absolutely hate each other. Two giant ass egos who think they're equally the best.

Look up Ozzfest 2005. There was a show where Sharon fucked up the sound system and got people to egg Maiden while they were on stage.

Do you have any idea what a metric shit ton of artists both mainstream and obscure that Black Sabbath and Ozzy have influenced? Its mathematically impossible for everyone to show up.
But yeah sure. Some 30 minutes of Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus and Thergothon would have been much more kino than GNR or Disturbed. But that was never going to happen because this whole thing was just Ozzys farewell to the mainstream music industry.

Method Man often complains that he can't get booked bcuz young kids don't know who he is, and ask any CW fans to name three pioneers, and they'll say Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, then stare silently at you for an hour while their third neuron fails to spark.

Anthrax paid, out of their own pocket, four unknown noobs with a cult following to fly to NJ with their shitty cassette demo and got them a record deal, a simple tour and the set up to record their first album. Their names were James, Dave, Cliff and Lars. A little bit later, they helped Dave set up his new band while he worked with a guitarist named Kerry who was in another band that Anthrax ALSO helped get started.

So yes, Anthrax was pretty influential. Even if you're too much of an indoor faggot to understand just how much fucking fun Anthrax was as a live band, bcuz contrary to what your retarded YouTube zoomer teaches you, Heavy Metal is meant to be listened to from inside a mosh pit, not the way YOU listen to metal, which I assume is in your mom's basement on a computer while constantly alt-tabbing between YouTube.com and r34.com/tag=furry

They went too fkin mainstream maaan. Hope there will be some sucessors to that spiritual kind of hard rock but i think to make truely original stuff in that vein probably takes too much creativity that the average 6 chord guitar beard bimbos couldn't replicate. elvis used to demand writing credits on songs he didn't write too.
it's just kinda how intellectual property works.
they come up with a formula how to divide profits with songwriter getting such and such cut.
but the formula is rigid and doesn't take into account specific situations.
i.e., elvis was huge and whatever slop he recorded would sell, so why should songwriter get that huge cut when what''s selling the record is elvis singing it.
same goes for ozzy.
that guy's song wouldn't have sold squat if ozzy didn't sing it.

there were literally 10,000 songwriters who would have stepped in to replace the guy signing over songwriting credits to elvis.
i don't know the specifics of the ozzy situation, but the guy's song wouldn't have sold shit if ozzy didn't sing it. ozzy was the one bringing an audience and commercial viability. so why should they be bound to a dumb formula that says songwriter gets such and such cut when the actual real world situation was it was ozzy singing it that sold the product?
show biz is funny. when you don't have a name (like this songwriter guy) you have no leverage and make pennies, when you do (like ozzy in early 80's) you got the leverage and can pocket almost all the profits.

Yeah I mean I haven't listened to Metal since I was about 16 and that was over half my life ago, I wouldn't have bothered to see any of these bands live on their own (apart from Mastodon, maybe AiC and now that I have seen them live and seen how good they are, Tool) but would go for Black Sabbath's original line up. Would be based if Discharge could pull off something similar but it can't happen.

no because no bands ever really retire. They say they are, go on a farewell tour, then "oops we are making a new album + tour, sorry if you fell for our grift. Thanks for the money though"

Ozzy can't walk anymore so obviously he's not gonna perform anymore.

I've seen Tool live once on every album tour since Undertow. Highly recommend seeing them ONCE, but the problem with seeing Tool more than once is their live show is basically a movie. A really good movie, but once you've seen it there's no reason to pay money to watch it again.

Slayer on the other hand is ALWAYS worth seeing live even if you don't care for their music.

Now that I have seen them live here if I can get a chance to see them again for a proper full show I will definitely check it out. Was very impressed and this was without all of the light show/visuals in their usual set that everyone has told me about.

Mastodon opened and their new guitarist seems to be decent.

i've been a Tool fanatic since Opiate and been to many many shows but the show from pic related...about 2 months after the release of Fear Inoculum was my favourite. the curtain effect as the title tracks eerie intro started up along with the swirling visuals was so over the top yet a nod to Genesis etc. i didn't think they could get any better than the Lateralus 2002 shows but they proved me wrong.

Somehow some dude I know from Canada managed to get 2 tickets for 250 quid (might have been Canadian dollars) and he seemed to do it legitimately, no reselling and no other websites, just got them off the official page. No idea how he managed but I'm grateful he did and asked me to go with him. I live about 40mins away from Birmingham so if they were fake it was a much bigger inconvenience for him than me. At one point we were in the wrong queue to get in and the tickets didn't read and I was like "I FUCKING KNEW IT" and then they just directed us to the right queue and it was fine.

>>126973733
I've seen them do it before when they let people sit at the side of the stage, they needed most of the ground to accommodate the people. For a smaller show they would have just closed off part of the stands on the side and had big screens only at the front.

Pic related was Metallica, I really don't like them but I can't lie, they sounded decent live.

Unironically Foo Fighters but only in ten years maybe once Grohl is like 65 or so. When it feels like a farewell concert. All the remaining of Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, QOTSA, a lot of millennial bands that look up to them like Deftones, Bullet For My Valentine, The Strokes, The Killers and Avril Lavigne, Blink 182.

>war pig

Nobody seemed to comment on the obvious hypocrisy of closing the show - and the career of Black Sabbath - with "War Pigs," while profits from that very performance would be going to slaughter innocent children in Gaza.

Sabbath, via their master Sharon Osbourne, became in their final moments exactly what they had originally so decried.

"The fans online looked from war pig to band, and from band to war pig, and from war pig to band again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."

Foos is an interesting one. Those first couple albums were great then it became all cookie cutter. Also, he sacrifices band members to level-up in power. Saw em in 03 in a dingy ampitheatre out in the sticks. Now they play stadiums, and he has a WEF vibe about him. There is nothing interesting musically they have to offer. Clear channel rock.

Metal as a musical form is actually self-destructive. The metal artist self-immolates with their frustration and anger - which is why it's so compelling but also why so few bands of the genre survive.

Alcoholica was always about wanting parental attention (James especially) for being oh-so-rebellious, making them more accurately a metal cover band than truly metal. Cliff died for his music; Lars and James merely profited from his sacrifice.

Thus "Metallica" can continue to play forever for fans who can no longer feel testosterone-driven anger and the music it creates, and for those "hipster metalheads" who think "metal" means "wearing a t-shirt from a band with a catchy name and a recognizeable logo."
