Paul was infinitely more talented than John. The stretch of time right after the breakup where they were dissing each other was so funny because john had to contend with the fact that he couldn't hold a candle to solo Paul.

theres nothing on pepper that carries the album for me like eleanor rigby, tomorrow never knows, yesterday, or dear prudence. and theres no kicking rock bangers like helter skelter or taxman either. its certainly not bad but for golden era beatles standards I dont find it special.

It's a nice little song but the chorus going "AAAaaAaaaAAAA" just means they couldn't figure anything else to tie to unreleated pieces of lyrics together.
Beatles use alot of aaAAAaa chorus, I love them, but I also want to be invited into an etheral trip, not pushed off the edge.

Sgt Peppers is celebrated as a complete work; I think that's why it's so often cited as one of the first "concept albums" (even despite the concept being half baked, only sparsely applied, and with the genius premise of "we are a BAND and we are singing SONGS"

It's the sheer variety on the album that blows peoples minds, rightly

That's my literal favorite part of the song next to the massive grandiose orchestral climaxing lol. I think it's because it's mean to be trippy and dreamy moreso than a typical structured song. Sure it's lazy in the songwriting sense but it's their best song imo. Saves Pepper from being a mediocre album.

Yeah John's musings are almost always more interesting than Paul's lyrics about.. whatever. All of paul's songs are about one thing at a time. They're all somewhat fantastical. "She's Leaving Home" is uniquely interesting, lyrically, but still one dimensional.

John songs are like these tours of the psyche

I would, though I'm not sure who you're advocating for here. Perhaps Paul has a better range but John's voice had a much rawer rock sound. John commented "Oh, Darling!" should have instead been sung by him and I can't say I disagree.

Paul's rhymes are far superior; you can memorize Paul lyrics after hearing them one time, whereas even John himself would fuck up his own lyrics sometimes (as they are far less 'intuitive')
That said, John's songs are more vulnerable and personal. John's lyrics are real.. he talks about his emotions in a straightforward way. Paul has no lyrics which may compete with I'm Only Sleeping, Yes It is, Girl, etc.

I'm not saying Paul isn't emotive, but he always seems to describe his problems from a distance, and in a way that seems secondary to the music. Like as in Yesterday, or For No One, or of course, Hey Jude, which only obscurely references John's son.

John's lyrics just sound better "Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away" it's simple it's beautiful. "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see" Paul tells stories, John paints pictures

Okay, how about the other parts of a song lol
A song isn't just a voice and melody. You'd get far less conventional structures with John songs, which were compelling.

Also.. stop. Lyrics are important.

Well, some of the other parts are gonna remain pretty consistent between John and Paul’s songs because they aren’t the only two members of the band. Ringo is still gonna do his thing, Paul will still play bass and George and John will still be on guitar. I know you’re getting at composing styles but because they’re still in the Beatles for the songs we’re talking about you kind of have to use melodies and lyrics to tell the John and Paul songs apart.

Absolutely. Alls I'm saying is I appreciate the nuances and quirks to John's songs more and more as I get age. The songs speak to me.
Paul's songs appeal to my aesthetic sensibilities but mostly just that.

Yeah dude and when I'm reading a book with illustrations I ignore the illustrations to focus solely on the words. And when I'm watching a movie I don't care about the script or the sound design or anything, only visual stuff. Every work of art should only appreciated based on the most narrow definition of the medium it's in, that's the sophisticated way.

Anonymous No.126956496 [Report]
Paul's songs could be about anything and it's reflected in his songwriting. It just doesn't matter. Martha my Dear is about his dog. Just had a nice tune and was like "I guess I'll sing about my dog". IIRC "Yesterday"'s original premise was laughably silly. Helter Skelter is about a carnival slide. He doesn't often touch the depths of human emotions though is quite gifted at depicting the serene. Mother Nature's Son, for example.

John's music and lyrics are inextricable. There is no "She's So Heavy" without the music and lyrics being exactly what they are. He's much more holistic in his approach in that way.

George seems pretty deliberate with his songwriting and only transcends when the inspiration is genuine, such as in Here Comes the Sun.

Ringo blows them all out of the water, of course.

Almost true, but not 100% accurate.
Yes, Sgt. Pepper was the first album where the U.S. and British version were ALMOST identical. (The U.S. version did not ave the lock track at the end of side two)
Actually Side one of Beatles for Sale, and Beatles 65 are exactly identical, EXCEPT, Beatles 65 doesn't have Kansas City on it.

Also, the ONLY difference between the U.S. and British Revolver is that the British version has three extra songs left off the U.S. version. (And Your Bird Can Sings, I'm Only Sleeping, and Dr. Robert)

However, Beatles fans got to hear And Your Bird Can Sing, Dr. Robert, and I'm Only Sleeping on Yesterday and Today, which was released one month before Revolver in both The U.S. and Britain.
