For the record, I find Robert Fripp's guitar music pedantic and joyless. Please leave mentions of him out of your future posts.

I disagree
I think Fripp is a tremendous musician, but I honestly don't see him as being a musical genius, but rather as an authoritarian figure in his band
many musicians (some even more skilled and creative than him) bow down to his authority for the oportunity to play in King Crimson, but I don't believe the doc was honest in its display of how tense the atmosphere is in there
they make it seem as if playing with Fripp is some hardship to overcome for the sake of playing well, when really it mostly has to do with him being a hardass for no reason
it frankly seems petty of him, as if he romanticises this persona

Speaking as a Rush fan, I think Lifeson could best be described as a model hard rock/heavy metal guitarist. As a soloist, it's all about getting in and out quickly and efficiently, having it written out and melodically structured rather than improvised and spontaneous, and making a big impression. Alex was a master of that, especially in their 80s output when the songs got shorter and tighter. His solos were like their own episodes within the song.

the jazz and classical influences in most Prog bands are often superficial, whereas Vander was deeply inspired by both. some 20th-century classical music and specific jazz artists sound much closer to Magma than most 70s Prog bands, Stravinsky's Les Noces is a good example, bands like Yes, ELP, Genesis, etc. have barely any Classical influence, and the little bit that is there can be reduced to a Gimmick, honestly it's kind of an insult that Magma is lumped in with these uninspired prog rock bands.

>Roy Harper said that he was unhappy he had not been credited by the band for singing the song "for the first 10 or 15 years" after it came out. He also said he was not paid the agreed payment; he wanted tickets for life to Lord's (cricket grounds) but received "a few hundred quid" instead. Harper had to hire a lawyer to resolve this grievance, which he called "ironic" and said it made the song (which is about ripoffs in the music business) into a self-fulfilling prophecy by turning the collaboration among friends into "the dirty music business."
How could Roger do this?

Zeuhl has distinct characteristics that are clearly definable and observable and while present in non-zeuhl progressive rock bands, aren't staples found in every band. To the point even where there are zeuhl bands like Eskaton who sing in their native language rather than gibberish but can still be defined as zeuhl for having all of the vocal and instrumental qualities present in Magma; And to the point that instrumental zeuhl groups ranging from Ewaz Vader to Dun pop up and are recognized as zeuhl for showcasing a clear reverence for Magma's instrumental sound, particularly the Jannick and Paganotti eras.
To argue that zeuhl shouldn't actually exist because it's just jazzy symphonic prog is to argue that "symphonic prog" doesn't exist because it's just progressive rock.

Apart from the singers doing their whiny falsetto the bands sound nothing alike.
But then again I was listening to Muscle Museum once during work and the guy from finance asked me if I was listening to Radiohead so maybe they really sound alike and I just can't hear it.

>Their limitation is Matt is the only one with decent ideas
Chris Wolstenholme (I had to look up how to spell that) comes up with some of the best basslines in modern rock. He's also the only member of tbe band to get writing credits on a song but you are right, 99% of the tracks are credited solely to Bellamy.

BITCH half of ร‹mรซhntรซhtt-Rรฉ is just rehashed tracks that sound better anywhere else, and Zess was perfected in the Mythes & Legendes series. The studio ver has no fucking energy whatsoever by comparison.
Mite bump up 1001 because now that I think about it it's quite good aside from the last track, but those releases are not it senpai.

for me it's the opposite, the live version feels like it's missing something, especially once you get to the later half of it, which is weird because i almost always prefer live Magma, no the studio version of Zess is definitely better.
and ร‹mรซhntรซhtt-Rรฉ is better than Udu Wudu, i always felt like Udu Wudu seemed to be more "thrown together" or almost like a Demo or EP or something, where ร‹mรซhntรซhtt-Rรฉ sounds like a finished album, the songs were fully realized, Magma was always better at making Suites rather than short individual pieces.

Any proof of that? I'm curious because I like Phil and don't like the shit he gets from Gabriel fans.

They should've broken up after Brain Salad Surgery. They'd taken the maximalist wank gimmick as far as it could go. Works was the work (heh) of a band that was so egomaniacal that they couldn't bother to function as a cohesive unit anymore, and so rich and distracted they couldn't bother to put in the effort anyway.

Punk was not a relevant force in the industry as far as selling millions of records was concerned. That's just what rock critics wanted to believe because they were desperate for punk to topple the establishment and save them from AOR, but it didn't work out like that. What really killed prog's golden age was the excess of the industry backfiring on them and the economic slump forcing labels to prioritize more commercial music.

correct, prog digged its own grave.
ELP is the perfect representation of the prog movement. They reached the peak of popularity on their time, and then they tried to go full orchestra, and it backfired.

even if ELP did fly too close to the sun, why did the rest of the entire prog industry fall apart as well and so quickly?
and not only prog rock, but most classic rock bands started to fall apart in the late 70s
Zeppelin, Sabbath, Deep Purple, The Who, Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane... pretty much all the big rock acts from the late 60s/early 70s saw a dip in appeal by the end of the decade
