02 amp and a piece of shit magni 3
i had a thx 789 or 889 i forgot which that killed itself and it was also horrible. I'll probably get a valhalla 2 or build my own tube amp when i get the chance. I have some old jvc stereo amp that strangely has an outrageous amount of power and doesn't really have noise until 80% but it has a channel imbalance i havnt fixed but it has to be almost 1.5x the power of the o2 or magni.

I had HD700s that everyone seems to hate but I really loved them for the massive soundstage, and I don't give a shit about bass. Eventually they broke though, nearly 10 years of daily use and abuse took them out.

Need a new high end pair at some point, but been too lazy to do the research. Been tempted by >>126963310 but I assume they wouldn't be that massive of an upgrade.

the best budget options are from drop, which was far as i know doesn't ship to bongs. The aeon and the 6xx are still the best bang for your buck and it isn't close. Although you can probably get aeons shipped to bongland from egay.
I would personally recommend the aeon, or really anything from mrspeakers/dan clark. Pretty much all of them on the used market sell within the price you'd get new 600/650 for and destroy them. The 600's you would probably find less comfortable than the 598, but the 600/650 sound better but it's not the biggest upgrade there is.
I would avoid chinkfiman like the plague considering it's probably without a shadow of a doubt the worst qa company of anything i've ever heard of. Even the susvara has qa problems($6k USD).
There is also the r70x, the hd 490 and some other if you are only looking for new headphones, but i personally have never had a problem with used stuff and have saved a lot from it

ta for the recs mate
im not too worried about budget and all that, i think these 598s are great daily drivers but i liked having the 700s for that "flagship" feel, even if people bickered over the actual audio levels being good or shit
i was tempted to just go with a more obvious choice like the DT990s and stuff like that so I got to check out more of the "classics", but then I would like something closer to the "top end for people who arent millionaires" just to really crank the volume and take it in on special occasions

like part of me was unironically considering meze but once it reaches the "several thousands" i do start to back out a bit

The HD 800 is the obvious choice if you liked the hd 700. After that it gets completely into side grades/potentially better or just different tech like electrostats. I settled on them myself after owning both open/closed aeons/ethers/ and pretty much every single mid-fi headphone of relevancy there was. I got kind of lucky on mine so they weren't even $1k cad and i really couldn't be happier

anon, if you are being filtered by a wire i don't know what to say. The only decent wireless headphones are all flawed to hell and overly expensive for what they are, just to not plug in a wire? All of them still get hyper mogged by anything decent, have you considered you just don't care about audio quality?

I'm looking for comfortable over-ear headphones that I could wear for hours (8+ hours) on a daily basis without it being a painful experience (pressure on the head, ears sweating). I listen to all kinds of music (mostly electronic), so anything that is decent for all genres would be preferable. Another thing I'm looking for is passive noise cancelling (decreasing the volume of sounds around me like voices and such).
The long usage comfort, decent sound and passive noise cancelling are a must. The budget doesn't matter as much, what would you recommend?

>A good headphone amp is as important as the cans themselves
not really. even an 02 amp which msrpd at like $60 can run basically anything, especially what kinds of gear people in this thread have. I think most peoples files/source of music is so trash that they think they need a lot more than they do. The odd time i've had to go on yt for a song it's like half the volume of all my files with replaygain settings applied.
It also doesn't help there is pretty much nothing of lower quality than the audio amp industry. Schiit spent the first few years pumping out absolute hyper trash, which they still do, i mean the magni 3+ on gain has audible noise, ontop of them not honoring warranties. The thx 778/889 was failing in under a year for most people and had horrific qa, i myself had one die in literally a week.

Headphones are a dramatic different in audio quality, where amps might have some effect of general volume level but by no means are they making any pair of headphones noticeably better

There's nothing magical about headphones for causing hearing damage. Get a SPL meter and compare with speakers so you can see how loud you're actually listening. Anything over 70dB(A) can cause hearing loss. Workplace safety standard of 85dB(A) is set to avoid causing legal deafness not to avoid all hearing loss. I think there are two common reasons why people listen too loud with headphones: too much background noise, and insufficient bass fooling them into thinking it's quiet. Closed planars like >>126968475 (with EQ if necessary) mitigate both those problems.

aeons on the used market are about $300 usd, sometimes even less. I probably should of stated that in my post for budget anons. They have some higher end variants that are more than the drop ones ($529) is that what you saw or are you using a different currency?

I've owned open box ethers cx, aeons, used aeons and 14 year old early sm hd 800s. Not one of them was even close to disgusting or smelly. The people who are into high end gear (on average) are not the kinds of people who smell like trash and destroy things. I have had 1 single bad experience with 'used' or open box headphones and it was the dt 880 which smelt like hair gell and i had to return them.
So my logic, at least on the 10 pairs i've owned holds

Anker wireless headphones or Anker wireless earbuds. I don't believe in bluetooth/ANC giving you AIDS or whatever, so I like these for their battery life and decent sound for the price. I mostly listen for the melodies anyways and EQ out the worst of the bass boost they tend to give.

The Sennheiser 6xx still holds as the best value headphone on the market, it has a pleasant sound profile for most people and the pads ands the headband pad are cheap and easy to replace
The r70x is essentially the hd 600/650/6xx line but with a strange headband design, at least the old one that's been heavily discounted but with a wider soundstage and probably a more desired sound profile for most people

if you want something cheaper and are fine with open backs you can look into the hd 599 or the 560's as both tend to go on sale for quite cheap, the 560 being essentially perm on sale for $180 CAD and the hd 599 for $120 a few times a year, but i would still take the 600 line or the r70x over both

The m40x is cheaper than the m50x if you want closed backs with a better signature and need or want closed backs, other closed backs in that tier are pretty bad over all, the other one of note is the dt 770 but it's got the most ear rape treble of anything you can probably find

But in general you can't go wrong with just sticking with the hd 600 line like most people do, it gets kind of cluster fucked beyond that

That's a tough one, the best ones from what i could see were slightly above your price with the akg k702 at 105, aside from those maybe the hd 569 from sennheiser. Anything else seems like it's pretty much junk or chinese, although the other i suggested are also made in china. The k702 has it's problems, most notably comfort but you can cut a piece of foam and double sided tape or adhesive it to the headband for more comfort, they still probably have the widest sound stage of any western brand below the hd 800, but the treble is quite piercing. The hd 569 should be the most comfortable on that website in that tier though, they are also closed back if you want that.
everything else i'm too inexperienced with to comment on but there might be something worth looking into still

>by no means are headphone amps making any pair of headphones noticeably better
That's entirely dependent on one's ability to notice, isn't it?

If you're the kind of person who doesn't notice the difference between amplifiers (or wired vs wireless, or lossless vs lossy encoding), then it's easy for you to say it doesn't make a difference.

But to those who can hear the difference, the differences are very real, and significant.

I am the kind of person to notice the difference, it's why I've hoarded more headphones than any reasonable person would. It's just not how amplifiers work, maybe if you were talking tube amps or using hardware equalization.
Thats before getting to how much of a pointless waste of time and money most amps are, unless we start talking about giga expensive things.
Most decent amplifiers now are at the point of having enough power to run most things, as i stated earlier with the o2 being able to run hd 800 at ear rape levels of volume with no obvious hiss, like the magni 3 has on gain.

That's *exactly* how (good) amplifiers work. Drivers and the amplifier powering their motion to accurately (as one can achieve) reproduce an input signal aren't separate, they're parts of a single system. It's simply not understanding circuit design and audio engineering to claim otherwise.

It's fine if you can't hear the difference, or the differences don't matter to you. Millions of people choose to listen to mp3-encoded music on wireless earbuds.

That *you* don't hear it, or *you* don't care, doesn't mean other people don't easily hear meaningful differences.

I love how all you do is strawman everything I say. I do not use fucking mp3 files, wireless trash or think amplifiers do something. They are exactly what they are and that's adding power(volume) to something. The dramatic majority of headphones are not going to benefit from going to 140db and giving you actual hearing loss.
I don't know what i expect from someone who buys monoprice trash and then talks down to people about caring about 'audio quality'

If you intend to just use your headphones in your room / around the house then I highly recommend trying out an open back pair. I used the bayerdynamics 770pro for 5 years straight and in that price range they are among the best closed backs you can get. but going from that closed off, trebble-y and tinny limited sound profile to the HD600s was genuinely astonishing and made me fall in love with music all over again. so if you primarily care about sound quality and comfort, then I highly recommend spending an extra 100 bucks or so on some nice sennys.

there are like two pairs of wireless headphones that are even somewhat acceptable, and both have qa problems with snapping headbands and dying drivers. (focal/audeze). The truth is anon that at any price tier wired is better than wireless, and that's avoiding the subject of compression.
If you tried any decent pair of headphones it would be quite obvious, and if you think your speakers and headphones sound the same it's likely you also have poor quality speakers.
I would advice you try and demo something decent before you hold such strong opinions on the subject

There are some others but I like all of those, if you want to test a more wide range of sounds things like Fluid from yosi horikawara are good for that. I just tend to avoid his work because it's not something I'd ever listen to aside from testing. But it's incredible for what it is

I downloaded all these in lossless format, but that's a topic for another time.

Some headphones I would recommend demoing would be the HD 800, Sennheiser HD 650/600/ Dan Clark Aeon(open or closed, closed is closer to reference and open has more bass),Audeze lcd 2, Anything from stax if you can, r70x, dt 770 (just to see how bad treble can be done).

First and last pair of wireless earbuds. I don't care how good they are, using them daily has made me realize that I hate wireless earbuds on a fundamental, conceptual level.

I hate Sony honestly so I'd say no, they just bass boost to shit and are cheaper quality than they should be.
Can't say for that pair specifically though, and if you're a bass junkie maybe it's aite, but I just hate them.
