Wish I still had an actual tape 8 track. I currently have a digital 24 track and I can get the lo-fi sounds I’m looking for, but those old tape recorders have a sound that is pure sovl. It’s not a meme, everything done via interface/DAW all sounds soulless and the same. Same goes for amps/modeling, if you disagree you’re wrong and anything you reply will be disregarded.

Also I wish I had a flying V. Gibby is out of my reach so I'll have to settle for the Epi one. I like the 70s model more than the OG but the latter has even better fret access which is nice. Vs are the shit, every other shape just pales in comparison.

It’s not impossible to get decent sounds out of a modern setup but the vast majority of those who use it don’t. It’s just a simple fact. You could accuse me of relying on lower fidelity equipment as a crutch, and that’s partially true, but there’s still that element of the warmth and organic sounds you get from tape and even more so from analog tape recording. Also, plenty of younger people record with tape, they’re usually consider hipsters by plebs like yourself. Really though they just have better taste and a more discerning ear than you do.

Thanks, won't be any time soon but eventually I'll get it. I've got a King V and after getting used to that, playing regular guitars while sitting just doesn't feel nearly as comfortable. Playing LP standing up is pretty nice though, although I do love the look of a V much more.

>>126974822
I do have a King V yeah, I think I posted about it when I was trying to do a setup myself. And failed. It's actually pretty nice to play but it's the cheapo series and has plenty of issues, mostly with tuning. Took it to a tech yesterday and the guy said it's got faulty string spacing on the bridge which sucks. It also came out of the factory built so that the bottom of the neck pocket sticks out from the neck and the neck plate sticks out of the pocket. You get what you pay for I guess. I do enjoy playing it a lot even with all the issues it's got but even if I had a nicer Jackson I'd still want a flying V. That classic shape of a Gibby V is just too gorgeous.

Personally I buy from Sweetwater whenever possible. It's not just a blind buy, you see pictures of the individual guitar you're buying and even usually get a choice between 3 examples of the model you're purchasing.
As far as playability, anything that can't be handled with a knowledgeable setup is a dud and needs to be returned regardless. But I've never seen that from Sweetwater.
And if you're buying used you usually get pictures of every angle under the sun and know exactly what you're getting.

I love my edwards LP to death but it came with aftermarket SD PAF copies and I got like 450$ of normal reverb price- most people say modern epis are on par or better new.
Thing is... a lot of these edwards teles especially look like SEXXXXX, we're talking body and neck binding and using seymour duncans for all the pickups, high-quality electronics and 500k-1mb pots too.

I’ve got Bustang #2 upstairs for the evening. Sometimes it’s tricky deciding which guitar to retire with for the evening with the wealth of options I have currently. For years I thought offsets were gay and finicky beyond being worth the effort (really it was a cope of not being patient and being too poor to afford good ones). They can definitely be a pain, especially if you get a lemon offset, but if you get a good one with a good setup they’re way more fun than having a good Strat or Les Paul IMO. This is a 2012 MIJ and it’s got a perfect set up that I will maintain meticulously. So fast playing, perfect action and string tension, it stays in tune no matter how hard I play it or push the trem.

I’ve had a retardedly good string of luck buying without playing. My last 5 have been bought online, mostly used and have all been better than expected. I know when to stop looking the horse in the mouth though, and also I need to chill, I’ve spent almost five grand on gear so far this year. If you vet the seller on reverb you can usually rest easy, most of the guitars I mentioned came from music stores or specialty dealers selling on reverb. You can never be too careful though, especially if you’re picky and can’t into DIY repairs and setups.

If you pick up 5 American Standards with the same specs and one of them feels especially good, much of the time it can be quantified by it being a superior setup as opposed to a superior instrument.

The only Strat I can say feels significantly better is my friend’s ‘84 elite Strat he inherited from his dad. Unless you've never held an electric guitar before or if you want to check how the guitar feels then you go to the nearest music store.

Before my local GC closed down I used to grope necks and get a feel of different brands of guitars just so I have an idea of how they feel and play. It's 80% neck and 20% body; not everyone will want a Gibson chonk neck because boomers lived with it in the 50s or a limpdick faggot ultra thin neck like an Ibanez because muh noodling.

Hmm, so you mean a lot of the haters of these practices got scammed by shitty/non conductive products? i can see that, however my main gripe with it is sure, you can basically make a faraday cage in your pickup cavities and the party room in the back, BUT the single coils will still be exposed towards the strings no?
so is it more of a.. eliminate as much as possible kind of deal?
i bought a 200 dollar SSS squier to test out if i liked it or not, sold it off and ordered a player II with SSS, this is why im asking basically.

(yeah, i know there is little to no sense in shielding a guitar with humbuckers)

eliminate as much as possible. low voltage is extremely susceptible to interference. i'm not sure exactly how low the voltage is coming out of a passive pickup but it's very very low. you can't run your line voltage next to your low voltage wires in a split unit air conditioner for example because the voltage bleed will cause errant readings in the computer on the low voltage side and the unit won't run right. it's probably not so big of a deal on the string side because the strings and bridge are on the ground part of the circuit already

I think my current plan of attack will be to just replace the cheap shielding on the back of a pickguard i have and see if i need to do more.

Also, anyone got any good diagrams on how to wire up SSS but with a push/pull pot to enable the neck in any position?

If you know how to play chords on a guitar then you already know how to play chords on a piano since it's the same principle (root + third from root + fifth from root) and on Piano it's even simpler since the only chord shape for a major triad is literally just a white key, skip, white key, skip, white key, or for a minor triad you just flatter the third from the root which might involve black keys but it's so simple a dog could do it

Might I suggest that most hobby guitarists would really benefit investing in some private workshops with an actual professional player who could HONESTLY evaluate their skills and knowledge and actually teach them.

I am not talking some amateur teacher at Guitar Center. I mean a real session guy who does private workshops.

Folks would be amazed at what they could learn in a few REAL workshops given by a pro.

I am amazed when guys dont even know how to tell what key a song is in by ear or what the added note in an A13 would be etc. etc...

Guitar George No.126978752 [Report]
Funny thing is that a chord is a chord, if you know the names of the notes and where they are at on your instrument, it doesn't matter what you're playing. Starting with guitar first will help a little bit for finger dexterity and synchronizing your hands but the best way to learn piano is play piano. Piano is a percussion instrument even though it has strings remember that.

Btw, I am not selling workshops.
I am retired from the music biz.

I do teach for free at my local parks where anyone is invited.

I love to hear folks say, " why didn't someone show me this 20 years ago"
or " man! This is so simple, you explain this in a way I understand".

Most teachers are in no way qualified to teach.

They teach because they couldn't do a tour or session with ANYONE.

find an actual professional player who has paid his bills by playing and has good communication skills.

Not all professional players are good teachers. Some lack communication skills or the ability to organize concepts.

It is heartbreaking to see folks pi$$ off money on gear and then get a pat on the back by another guitar owner who can't play. It is a vicious cycle of utter failure.

!This all comes from moving back to my hometown and trying to tolerate local hobby musicians who can't play.

And mind you, I am not a Stochelo Rosenberg or Lee Ritenour, just a mediocre, working, touring/session guy, not some triple scale studio ace. But I have made a livin' for 50+ years with a guitar.

. It is such a different world than working with professional touring artists.

The whole mentality is different.

The last thing a pro wants is to have band member's wives, family and day job co-workers at a job. ( Gig) yuck!

I am not used to having to rehearse.

I am use to guys who can just be flown in and can play the job with almost no rehearsal.

And it is odd to have to explain what the slope and Q knobs on a equalizer are for. Or how to position a backline.

If I wave 2 fingers to prompt these guys to a two minor, they are clueless.

It is just a whole different world.

And they buy ridiculous stuff they literally cant operate/play.

I have never drank while gigging. Bourbon has now become my favorite band-mate.

This but unironically. I’m seriously tempted by the Player Marauder but being Chinese is a major turnoff and the ones that show up on reverb are usually pretty dinged up. If I do get one I’d replace the neck pickup with a proper P90. I had a ZZ Ryder back in the day with 3 quadbuckers that could be split. Admittedly that was a bit way too much, but the triplebucker is a nice, unique feature.
