"Real Breakcore" only consists of the late 90s/early 2000s digital hardcore and jungle punk scene. What is known by "Modern Breakcore" is nothing but IDM with questionable real breakcore influence. When people try to argue that artists like Sewerslvt are not real breakcore, while saying that usedcvnt is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake breakcore as Sewerslvt (plus the pretentiousness). Real breakcore sounds CHAOTIC, AGGRESSIVE, and UNCOMPROMISING. Fake breakcore is weak, overly polished, and a failed attempt to direct energy and rhythm into music. Some examples of REAL BREAKCORE are Venetian Snares, Drumcorps, early Igorrr, and Doormouse. Some examples of FAKE BREAKCORE are Machine Girl (post-WLF), most "lolicore," and anything that sounds like it belongs in a TikTok edit. BREAKCORE BELONGS TO HARDCORE, NOT TO HYPERPOP, AMBIENT, OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE.

I agree with you, anon.

It was born out of the demoscene (keygen crack music using tracker software (such as the Amiga OctaMed or FastTracker 2.) VSnares first album was made on OctaMED. Now he uses Renoise. Junglists and Gabber heads.

He also released a followup project under the pseudonym of flex busterman to this called "the brain of flex busterman":

more chiptune-y than average breakcore, but still adjacent. plus we have his other projects too which are more traditionally jungle/dnb/breakcore style

Yes, I probably know 100.0% of everything he ever did up to until like 5 years ago (not by heart but for a time I was obsessed with him), all side projects like Kate Mosh, the Hanayo collab, Rich Kid, Problem Child, The Redeemer etc. etc. Disliked most of them. I think he just had something different in mind with his music than what I liked. IIRC he has a classical backgroundd in education and was a choir singer, he probably looks down on his old Position Chrome stuff by now :(

It's the bastard love child of jungle, hardcore, and noise, made with a punk attitude to it. Each artist brings their own different musical flavors to the pot but it's so varied and loosely defined that it's a style where you know it when you hear it. Obviously slicing up breakbeats is the main focus here but this is done in a manner more erratic then what you'd hear in jungle/DNB, to the point where the drums serve less of a time-keeping purpose and become the lead in and of itself. One of the big criterias for me is that the drum splicing should be done in a way where imagining a single person recreating it on a drumset becomes impossible. On top of that, the musical elements surrounding the drums should evolve and propel themselves forward much in the same way. Plenty of old school jungle lends itself to finding a nice melody that can be looped without much change, but in breakcore every aspect of the song should find itself being torn apart and rebuilt constantly. For example, this song has the breaks typical of breakcore, but the piano sample here is looped without much being done to it, not satisfying my standard for breakcore

Also it should go without saying but Sewerslvt has none of what I've described in breakcore. It's either looped samples or some kind of trancey hooked drenched in reverb, these are played without anything done to really distort or break them apart over what's usually an amen break just played straight over and over again. Maybe played at different speeds, maybe cutting off parts of it sometimes, but never doing anything to really chop and slice the beat that even jungle artists were doing back in 93, let alone what you'd hear from actual breakcore. Fuck, you'll never even hear a drill in a Sewerslvt song

Interesting, are there some must-listen albums from each of those genres so I can listen to those and then compare it with a proper breakcore album?
