You can't really go around making statements like these when you've been your native country's only significant cultural export for the last 30 years.

Or you can, if you're an entitled retard named Bjork.

Sigur Rós. Also, Iceland literally has a tiny population, probably way smaller than whatever shithole US city you're from.

If anything they've punched way above their weight in cultural exports ever since the middle ages.

Seems decent enough as far as distribution platforms go to be honest, especially for niche artists.

She speaks from a position of unimaginable privilege, and that includes being what amounts to an ambassador for her country. If you weren't morons you'd realize that its smallness has worked to her advantage. Moreover, Björk rose to prominence when the music biz was at its absolute silly-money peak and you could put Kurt Loder on the red-eye to interview Courtney Love from a porta potty in Stuttgart. She of the five-format single and boundless techno-optimism did her part when it came to driving people into the arms of piracy and beyond.

'Boo-hoo artists have to tour to make money' -- yeah, like any decent act ever. Sadly we can't all be Icelandic royalty and MPDGs dicking around with "microbeats" and tie-in apps.

Novelty act.

I'm no artist and certainly no expert on the matter but recently I was at public discussion (basically five indie artists, and interview and audience which can ask questions) which heavily leaned into this topic and basically all present indie artists said that Spotify is not really good for small acts. All of them said that Bandcamp is much better platform.

Also talked about how best platform for actually making money of a song is still mainstream radio. If you manage to get a song in regular rotation it's still the most profitable way. One of the artist said the when they played one of her songs for roughly week in some "new faces" block (sorry, I don't listen to radio so have no idea about details) it made her more money than she made of Spotify and Bandcamp combined over past two years.

Of course they make more money from direct sales via. bandcamp for example, but spotify is a user-friendly, very popular platform with a decent recommendation algorithm and no hosting fees. It's good for exposure and the artist retains a good amount of control over how their work is presented.

lol what a perfect example of something that has become all too common with zoomers… claims of hypocrisy and contradiction… claims that the massively authentic talent isnt authentic enough! We don’t have to debate whether or not Spotify is ruining music (a very relevant and much discussed legit subject) no what we have to do is debate whether or not Bork should even have the right to say it!
>Moreover, Björk rose to prominence when the music biz was at its absolute silly-money peak and you could put Kurt Loder on the red-eye to interview Courtney Love from a porta potty in Stuttgart
Im quoting this part only because it’s very true… but it does nothing to substantiate an argument against Bork

>She of the five-format single and boundless techno-optimism did her part when it came to driving people into the arms of piracy and beyond.

lol sweetheart darling child I have a task for you. Listen to these two tracks. Notice anything? They are both ripping off Bork’s style to the nth degree. Both appeared on incredibly mainstream nerdy mega millions shows worshipped by incels who have zero fucking idea how derivative the songs are…

https://youtu.be/zkXbzffVl44

Emiliana Torinni (another successful Icelandic act when you claimed there was only one) has made a career out of being Bork’s official stand-in

Just checking you’re aware of the fact that another northling is responsible for Spotify, his name is “Lars”

I like Spotify, I get to listen to a few new albums a month on all my devices for like $16 and I pay for another account as well so that ain’t bad. Don’t care about the audiobook/podcast shit though, if that’s what made the price go up that sucks shit but I ain’t switching got too many playlist on Spotify.

I'm not a musician so I'm in no shape to question, what I do say is that before spotify music was already everywhere, including the internet and Napster and other "unorthodox" music sharing was much worse, desu I think record labels are evil and greedy and they've always been, long before spotify's greediness existed, long before.

in the UK BBC Radio 1 pay £14 per minute of music (according to the internet search i did just now, it used to be £21 per minute 15 years ago). and so a 3 minute song is £50 royalty each time and a top tier playlist track gets at least 5 plays a day, or about £1500 a week. but this is split up between people and the artist may share quite a bit of it.

depending on your label deal, selling a track on Bandcamp gets 90% of price. so a self-released £1 single track gets £0.90 but a label deal might only give you 20% or 50%, we'll never know.
being on the radio gives you exposure, which although 'exposure' is often used as a meme for cheapskates trying to get something for free, being on the radio and being popular increases your chances of getting the track sync'd elsewhere, increase your chances of getting gigs, festivals, increases youtube plays, and also if the response is good, gets your next track playlisted too.
