How old is too old to start playing an instrument? I started at 23 a few months ago and wish I started earlier

Never too late to play an instrument, but you're not going to be a virtuoso. Just practice the basics and play what you want.

There's a hippie festival I go to and a dude there started playing guitar and singing in his 60's and has played small acoustic sets. It's never too late dude

there are people who play instruments for decades then start playing entirely new ones you know. you can always learn more and more til you die.

To have a career that impacts the youth? 30. (BUT there’s always exceptions no so IMPOSSIBLE)
To do as hobby? Doesn’t matter. I mean if your older ppl will probably expect you to be good. Just don’t play publicly until you get good.

It depends what your goals are
>to have fun and learn the songs you like
never too late
>to become masterful at your instrument
23 isn’t too late but if you want to advance quickly, you’d have to make up for lost time by practicing a lot per day. if you’re happy with becoming a master by 40 y/o you can cruise by.

but most importantly, follow this advice

that way you will avoid making mistakes and wasting time.

Why is there some iteration of this exact thread every time I come here? I come here once every couple months, and every single time I do, someone is asking this question. It's very strange.

There are two instruments that I would suggest learning if you want to be good at music: the piano and the steel pans.

It only depends on how much free time you have and how much of that you use to practice

You can start playing an instrument in your 70s and become very proficient. Same for learning a foreign language. The reason people fail to become good at things late in life is because they lack the time or don't dedicate time to the subject.
Even a subject like learning a foreign language, a native speaker is inundated in that language for 18 years of their life 24/7. It's not that adults are worse at learning foreign languages (outside of accents) but rather most adults never put in the time kids do.
Anyone can learn to sight read or improvise on any instrument, at any age.

i started playing at 19, 27 now and can safely say that i'm the best guitarist out of all my musician friends who played since childhood. but that's only because i sincerely wanted to learn it and always want to get better. first few years i literally spent >12 hours a day playing

You really need to put all of your free time into it and you will still suck for a long time while doing this, so there is a long window of being the "mid-20s guy who does nothing but play guitar who sucks at guitar" but coming out the other end of that embarrassing situation is kind of worth it.

never too late. I do believe that muscle memory formed in youth is stronger and better, but its not necessary. You don't have to be the most talented shredding ass guitar player to be successful as a musician. Its really a small part of it

It highly depends on the genre and instrument. As a rule of thumb:
>anything classical or jazz related on an advanced level
Already too late. You might get to playing babby tier songs, but you will never sound "good" good.
>anything else, so pop, rock, metal etc
Go for it, although you won't be as good as people who play it from a young age (it doesn't matter usually)
