Punk is popularly predicated on shorter, punchy songs and prog is largely about long, sprawling songs isn't it
I mean if anyone's perfected it (in album form not just a song here and there) then I'd love to hear it

If you shortened the songs down to two and a half to three minutes, and take away the keyboards, synths, and sound effects, it would be straight up PUNK ROCK!
They're doing nothing special, but repeating the same chords over and over again.
If you can't hear the punk in Hawkwind, then you're not listening closeley enough.
Fuck, even The Sex Pistols knew Hawkwind was punk as fuck!

fair enough. wish i could remember where i read it, but apparently ginn was obsessed with king crimson on the last few albums and changed his guitar playing to emulate them. the last few metal-y black flag albums from the original run don't get enough love desu

Their 1984 spew of releases was too much. I don't think they got it together until the '85 releases like Loose Nut and In My Head but nobody listens to those.

They were just a continuation of The Minutemen, all because some psycho-stalker fan from Ohio wouldn't leave mike Watt alone, and wanted to be the new D. Boon.

I see where they're coming from with this description, but yeah... it's more like Glam Rock tinged powerpop with extended guitar solos and instrumental sections.

Though, the moment in the title track at 8:40 is something even greatest Prog rocks of all time wish they could have created. Not that what's being played is particularly dextrous or virtuosic, but that is one gorgeous little vignette. It really does feel like the skinny CBGB punks saying "fuck you" to all the showy jam bands.

I'm not sure I would associate that with "Prog" though, just because they have keyboards.
In fact, they sound more like The Doors on certain songs, than anything.

And also in their old mail-order flyers, Alternative Tentacles Records was saying that the Nomeansno album Sex Mad was punk rock's version of the King Crimson album Red. I can't remember the exact wording, unfortunately.
