Let's settle this once and for all. Was Nirvana famous and popular in the early 90s? Or was it Kurt's suicide that launched the band to fame and fortune?

Nirvana is an obscure indie band that no one has ever heard of.

I think these threads are made by some assblasted metal guy who wants to create an overexposure effect and make /mu/ averse to Nirvana

Quite clear what you're going for

I can't find the screencap, but someone once did the math on this. The tl;dr version is that Nirvana WERE "famous and popular in the early 90s", but NOWHERE NEAR as much as after Cobain's suicide. The band had only ONE multiplatinum album at the time (which had sold only about half of what Pearl Jam's debut did) and had really only produced ONE singles chart hit (which didn't even crack the top 5). In Utero had sold less than half of Stone Temple Pilot's debut album. They fell off HARD in 1993 and were on their way to being remembered as one hit wonders. Again, simple sales numbers and chart positioning conform this. There's nothing to "settle".

Smells like Teen Spirit
Lithium
Come As You Are
In Bloom
All videos on heavy rotation on MTV. Which was the most mainstream outlet for pop music at the time.

Old guy here. I was watching MTV regularly at the time and I have still NEVER seen the video for Lithium. I did not even know it had a video. So calling bullshit on this part at least. You're also overestimating how much IB and CAYA got played. You're 100% right about SLTS though. That got played so much that people got sick of it lol.

They were absolutely huge from late '91 until In Utero came out and received a lukewarm reception. Pop culture used to move so fast back in the day and by the time he blew his brains out everybody was moving onto the next big thing. His death definitely enhanced his legacy and helped stretched the grunge era for a few more years.

another fellow old guy here (42) and i call BS, watching MTV was my life when i was between the ages of 8-13 in the early to 90s and I saw the Lithium video all the time. That, Come As You Are, In Bloom and Teen Spirit were constantly on MTV. At the time I didn't really realize they were considered anymore popular than the other alternative bands at the time they always played (Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains, etc) the only difference I remember was more kids in my elementary school knew who Nirvana was but not always those other bands.

as a kid I always remembered confusing the Lithium video and the Pearl Jam Evenflow video, didnt help that they came out around the same time and were both always on MTV around that time in the early 90s. they both looked like videos made up of random concert footage

Grunge was force-fed by record companies just like they did with rap later.
MTV played a lot of it but normies listened to Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams instead.
A few years after Kurt offed himself, MTV changed into a reality TV channel.

Yeah, I'm a Gen Xer and they were huge. They changed music, but it didn't last long. The whole grunge movement lasted till the mid 90s. Only a few years, then rap and nu metal took over

> "No Nirvana" refers to a special edition of the BBC2 program "The Late Show", which featured live performances by alternative rock bands. It aired in 1992 and was distinct from the popular band Nirvana. The show was intended to showcase bands defining the alternative rock scene at the time.
>"No Nirvana" was a themed episode of the BBC's "The Late Show". The show focused on live studio performances of alternative rock bands. The bands featured were those that were shaping the alternative rock landscape. The title "No Nirvana" was likely chosen to emphasize that the show was not about Nirvana, despite the band's popularity at the time.

Why do zoomers think they can lie and people will fall for it? The fucking RADIO was the mainstream outlet. Only rich fags had cable in the early 90s, which was the only way to watch MTV. Fucking zoomers man.

Found this fucker on the Windows 95 cd-rom and was obsessed with that song. Wasn't until years later i came across the cd and was very underwhelmed. Still love Buddy Holly tho, but aside from Hash Pipe and that, i don't find their songs catchy at all.
