I have come to two conclusions about you.
1. You don't have a sense of humor
2. You are ignorant about what went into recording Maxwell's Silver Hammer.
I bet Donald Fagan would get the joke, and laugh his ass off, unlike nerds like you who take shit W-A-A-Y to fucking seriously.
But in all seriousness, do you even know the story behind Maxwell's Silver Hammer?
Have you even seen the Making of Aja documentary.

The studio experience could never explain Steely Dan in their totality, although it's crucial to understanding how it's led it their modern touring iteration. The professionalism is few and far between, the rotating cast/ensemble that Donald Fagen (and previously Walter Becker RIP) have put together is rivaled with that of say Prince or D'Angelo's band give or take. In 2025, if they were to tour again, and as of a few years ago they were still performing at a peak, I wouldn't hesitate to find front row tickets

Steely Dan made great lyrics back when great lyrics meant something. This is like rap music for people who actually have a brain
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ9Xk-VoGqo

While the music played, you worked by candlelight
Those San Francisco nights
You were the best in town
Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl
You turned it on the world
That's when you turned the world around

Did you realize
That you were a champion in their eyes?

On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene
But yours was kitchen-clean
Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motor home
Every A-Frame had your number on the wall
You must have had it all
You'd go to L.A. on a dare and you'd go it alone

Could you see the day?
Could you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away?

Get along, get along, Kid Charlemagne
Get along, Kid Charlemagne

Now your patrons have all left you in the red
Your low-rent friends are dead
This life can be very strange
All those Day-Glo freaks who used to paint the face
They've joined the human race
Some things will never change

You are obsolete
Look at all the white men on the street

Get along, get along, Kid Charlemagne
Get along, Kid Charlemagne

Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail
Those test tubes and the scale
Just get it all out of here
Is there gas in the car?
Yes, there's gas in the car
I think the people down the hall know who you are

'Cause the man is wise
You are still an outlaw in their eyes

Get along (get along), get along, Kid Charlemagne (get along)
Get along, Kid Charlemagne

My three go to albums are Can't Buy a Thrill, Aja, and, to a lesser extent, Gaucho.
However, if you're just getting yur feet wet, there's nothing wrong with starting out with "Greatest Hits" compilations like A Decade of Steely Dan, and The Best of Steely Dan.
In fact, those two albums actually have songs that are not on ANY Steely Dan albums, making them worth your while to have in your collection.
(The Best of Steely Dan has Here In The Western World which was only released here, while A Decade of Steely Dan has FM which was not on any Steely Dan album, but was released as a single, and only appeared on the soundtrack to the movie FM)

Those would be my recommendations for newbies.

Actually, nobody "Invented" LSD.
It was discovered, by accident by Albert Hoffman, a chemist working at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals in Switzerland in 1942.
He accidentally absorbed it on his finger while synthesizing rye ergot (mold), which is where LSD originally came from.
The next day after he came down, he separated the LSD from the rye mold, purified it for human consumption, used himself as a test subject, and ingested it again, and hallucinated wildly.

LSD was actually legal up until 1966, and Owsley was able to figure out how to make his own. It has been said that, all through the 1960s, he made the best, the purest, the least adulterated LSD on the west coast.
The man definitely deserved a tribute song.
I'm surprised The Grateful Dead weren't the ones to write one about him.
And, although illegal for the mst part, Sandoz Labs STILL makes LSD to this day for "Therapeutic Research" purposes. (But you gotta have the right licenses/papers, and cut through a LOT of red tape in order to obtain it)

I'll try to make this as short as I can....
Paul McCartney was/is a perfectionist, and when recording Maxwell's he made the rest of The Beatles record it over and over and over again until he was satisfied with it, and thought it was just right. The rest of The Beatles resented him for it for a very long time. Ringo called it "The Worst Recording Session we ever had".

Now, if anybody knows anything about Donald Fagan, and Walter Becker, they, too, are perfectionists, who will work their musicians to death until they are satisfied with the take. It might be one of the reasons why they have a revolving door policy, and why they remained a studio band for so many years. They ad/have a reputation of being the biggest assholes in the business, but, by golly, you can't argue with the results. even though I'm sure there are many musicians who will never play on a Steely Dan record precisely because of this.

f you were to watch the Making of Aja documentary, you can see, andhear the resentment from the musicians who participated int the recording of the album, while at the same time, admitting that all the hard work, and the demands of Fagan/Becker that went into making the album actually paid off. You also will see what assholes both Fagan and Becker were/are, wen it's just the two of them alone, and they listen to the playback. Pay close attention to Michael McDonald's comments when he talks about doing the background vocals for Peg.

Donald Fagan and Walter Becker make both Paul McCartney, and Captain Beefheart look like the nicest people in the world.

But, as I said, you can't argue with the results.

>genius jews who hired the best session players in jazz and rock
this right here

jazz fusion failed horribly as a genre but somehow Donald and Walter were able to get the best out of out of jazz musicians and make it work and be accessible to rock/pop

because of Walter's personal problems Gaucho ended up being a very keyboard-centric solo album for Donald and lost all the magic of bringing in great session musicians.

The saxophone soloing done by Wayne Shorter on the Aja title track is just the best solo instrumental ever

QRD? I always thought the protagonist was singing about a woman who was cheating with him when her man was out of town. Where did you hear it was gay? :-(

Oh, yeah.
I totally forgot about this song.
Before it got legitimately released, I had it on a studio bootleg, and it went under the title No Time To Cry.
It wasn't until it was released as Alice D. Millionaire that I clued in that it was about Owsley. (Alice D. Millionaire-LSD Millionaire. GOT IT!)

I used to play them at my work at a low volume cause no one noticed if music was playing. Which wasn't allowed. But if I put on Steely Dan no one gave a shit. Win for me I guess

This is what I've thought al these years, and still do.
I guess different people have different imaginations, and think what they want. If somebody think it's about a gay love affair, well, Steely Dan DID have that sort of twisted sense of humor, but I still think it's about a woman's boy toy who's being treated like shit.
Hey, to each their own.

You're kind of all over the place with your response.
First of all, the song itself is rather ambiguous and doesn't mention gender or orientation. you're right about the character being sung in the first person, but that's about it. There is no mention of gender and/or sexual orientation, but if you think it's about a gay lover, who am I to say that you're wrong? As I said, Steely Dan had a warped sense of humor that you might actually be right, but they were also intelligent enough to leave it up to the listener's imagination.
Also the correct spelling is RIKKI.
Another clever song that is not what one might think it seems.
For years, many people thought it was about when Rick Derringer jammed with Steely Dan on Countdown to Ecstasy, and were inviting him to become a permanent member of Steely Dan.In reality, Rikki was a WOMAN named Rikki Ducornet, a writer that Donald Fagan had a crush on when he was in college.

>Like Dirty Work is about a gay guy who is tired of the abusive sex from his top who's too cheap to buy a hustler, but keeps doing it anyways anyways

You posted the lyrics yourself.
Nowhere in the lyrics are there any indication of the gender of the first person telling their sad tale of woe, or the sexual identity of the two parties involved.
The only time gender is mentioned in anyway is when the second party's "Man" is out of town.
There really is no "wrong" answer.
It is strictly left up the the individual listener's imagination.

The song lyrics don't mention any homosexuality, so I've got no reason to see it. Things are generally normal unless it's explicitly stated that those things are abnormal. I think that you might just be attributing an imagined fetish or mental illness that just isn't there. Are you a homosexual? (This is not meant as an insult, btw way and if you are a homosexual, I hope you manage to get the help you need.)
