Do drums make music worse?
I've been listening to more classical music lately again and I kinda get the feeling that the drum kit's artistic potential has been exhausted. Drums are definitely extremely fun to play but I feel like they restrict the potential of the music to some extent. It's to the point where hearing a backbeat makes me roll my eyes. Should the drum set be done away with?

The back beat is the purest form and most based beat there is fuck you.

It's just the exact same thing. Over, and over, and over, and over. It's satisfying, sure, but the snare is so prominent that it gets stifling.

Based OP, i have a sort of love-hate relationship, when it's really great and interesting i love it but most of the time and more and more often as i get older it feels like someone is beating me in the head with a hammer. The drumkit is also the least interesting type of percussion. It also kind of annoys me that the drumkit became pretty much obligatory in almost all music.

No but i remember it, it was funny and not entirely wrong.

Absolutely based, OP. This isn't even about percussion = bad, because you can absolutely use percussion compositionally. But the drum kit, especially in its looped role in rock/pop, is artistically inert: it mostly just fills space instead of shaping it.
Imagine pop, rock, metal, electronic, etc., not being locked inside a constant, rigid drum pattern, but instead built on fluid rhythm, elastic pulse, and developmental logic. That alone would make the music much more expressive, dynamic, and narratively rich.
But normies can't tap their feet to that, so it's a non-starter.
Anonymous No.127026804 [Report]
Drums are definitely less necessary than the masses would have you believe. And I mentally check out any time I hear a drum solo.
Anonymous No.127028503 [Report]
>>127026801
True, the amount of beathing space there is in drumless music is astounding when you go from listening to music that has an ongoing drum beat to music that doesn't, lack of drums also makes you much more aware of the melody and harmony.

As far as percussion goes, just look at the variery of sounds and colors you have with idiophones and bells and wooden and metal percussion as oppose to the monotone dry rigid sound of the drumkit (and drumkit emulating electronic beats).

Fuck drums.

People should just use washingboards as percussion like in the good ol days (also a big fan of mallet percussion)

>I heard the piece Aphex Twin of Richard James carefully: I think it would be very helpful if he listens to my work "Song of the Youth," which is electronic music, and a young boy's voice singing with himself. Because he would then immediately stop with all these post-African repetitions, and he would look for changing tempi and changing rhythms, and he would not allow to repeat any rhythm if it [was] varied to some extent and if it did not have a direction in its sequence of variations

it's just the hi hat that ruins everything. snare kick floor tom and one cymbal no bigger than 16inch is acceptable. obviously no sticks you play with brushes or your hands in my ensemble.

It depends on what type of music you're playing. If you added a guy doing blast beats to another guy playing Mozart, it would most likely not mix very well. But e.g. metal without drums looses so much of its punch. There are songs where the drumming is the standout feature, like the drumming on Bleed by Meshuggah.

I think what ruined drumming is the 80s drum machines

this causes every drummer in modern music to simply try to play as robotic and without feeling as possible

but of course if you listen to some jazz, math rock, or post hardcore you'll find some really good expressive drumming

That's why SOPHIE took most of the drums out in her best arrangements and relied on pure rhythmic and timbral interplay rather than a didactic 4/4 kick

What do you think of the way Buzzcocks used drums? They have such frenetic compositions the drums become a continuous rattle in bursts and blend with the guitars to create a stream of unified sound that bounces, stretches and recoils in an organic-sounding movement that seems particular to power-pop

Picrel. But despite being a classic, it's a very inaccessible album, so I wouldn't recommend it to anybody who isn't deep into metal to begin with. Also while the drums on it are quite technical by technical death metal standards, it's far from the most technical drumming that's out there. For even more technical metal drumming you'd have to look into progressive metal, so e.g. something by Dream Theater or Tool, or djent like Meshuggah. And if you want something even more technical, I'd suggest getting into jazz.
