Hot take: Joey Ramone is the single greatest melodist in all of rock music.

Ramones' early work is nothing but pure hooks, with all the usual bells and whistles completely absent, and they're still one of the best rock acts of all time.

Excellent post. There's a reason why phil spector produced one of their best albums. Spector was also trying to teach the people who didn't understand the ramones with the end of the century album.

I legit don't get the appeal of this album.
Every track sounds the same, like copy-paste with slightly different chords.
Itโ€™s just the same mid-tier melody looped over and over.
Most overrated album I've ever heard.

I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend is the gold standard for love ballads by a rock band. It's so sweet and sincere, but still firmly a rock song with punch and momentum that's cohesive with the rest of the album. Why do so many rockers feel the need to unplug their guitar before declaring their love? Love ballads are usually the cringiest songs by later rock bands (see Patience by GnR), but I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend has aged like fine wine.

The one that was always questionable, which I kinda agree with, was The Clash. Good band and all, but Joe Strummer came from a cushy, middle-class background, and a lot of their music leans more into a refined new-wave sound rather than raw punk. However, if The Clash was never real punk, but Sex Pistols and Ramones are also now not real punk anymore, what the fuck is even left? Dead Kennedys? Obscure Nazi punk bands? Please don't tell me it's Green Day.

It's hard for me to explain but blues has more of a swing to it while the Ramones are more straight on the beat. Someone pointed out earlier in the thread that Rock'n'Roll Highschool is fairly bluesy Ramones song. I get what Johnny was trying to do and why he said that.

Yes, the rhythmic feel is definitely different, and also they hardly ever seem to employ the blues scale or even the standard pentatonic scale. Their contemporaries like Zeppelin or Clapton would noodle endlessly on the same pentatonic licks over and over, so there's something really refreshing about how direct the Ramones are. Like someone else pointed out, their melodies are kinda like nursery rhymes, which really isn't a bad thing in my book. Their melodies have more in common with traditional, timeless folk tunes like Molly Malone, Wild Rover or Drunken Sailor than something like Johnny B. Goode or Crossroads.

Nah, dude. All you need to do is have Weird Al cover Beat On The Brat with an accordion to realize it sounds way more like a sea shanty than any blues tune.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_5v3T1XmkU

Compare I Wanna Be Sedated to Rock n' Roll High School, and you can really hear the difference between a more standard Ramones tune and one that's blatantly derived from Chuck Berry.

It taps into the human condition directly without a trace of pretentiousness. Beat On The Brat is about the inevitability of war, I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement is about the existential dread that follows us from cradle to grave, and Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue is about how drug abuse is born from a lack of purpose.

The first two Clash albums are punk as fuck, but, admittedly, it's by the numbers punk, and there were other bands at the time who were better and could mop the floor with them.

Even Lemmy and John Lydon saw through the middle class pose of Joe Strummer, and bot thought the "Politics" were disingenuous and insincere, and Johnny Rotten was actually friends with Joe Strummer. (He still hated the pose, and their by the numbers music though)

No matter what bullshit was going on between the four members, they never lost sight of their main goal.
The Ramones treated the band like a business, and no matter what animosity they held towards each other, when it was time to record a new album, or play a concert, all differences were put aside, and the main focus was to play music.
Some of the best bands have operated on this model, especially Cream, and The Who.

Surprisingly enough, both Joey, and Johnny were fans of the early Clash.
Joey bought a cpy of the White Riot single at Bleeker Bob's Golden Oldies in 1977, listened to it, and the played it for the rest of the band, excited about the fact that English bands were now doing what The Ramones started back in 1974.
Johnny Ramone, of all people was a fan of the early Clash material, and even gave them a pass on their politics, just because he thought the music was so good. (They're British, so it's OK. I know British punk is supposed to be political anyway)

>Ramones aren't punk anymore because one of them thought or said something racist
I know you're joking, but it annoys me more than it should that people think like this. It's such poser mentality. Punk is about irreverence, and today, being casual about making racially charged comments is about as irreverent as it gets. Maybe not on 4chan, but certainly in polite society. I'm not saying you have to be openly racist or hate niggers to be punk or anything, but if you're uptight and concerned with tone-policing others, you are a poser and a bitch, plain and simple.

I liked the degenerates until they became sanctimonious.

>Folk music isn't an actual genre
American folk music is.
>and most country doesn't heavily rely on major I-IV-V
I donโ€™t know about modern country, but pre-1980 country music used I-IV-V progressions almost exclusively. I actually canโ€™t think of one song that doesnโ€™t.

I became ultra-racist as I got older through experience and am truly horrifying to the punk rock uniform wearing faggots that are everywhere today. These people lack self-awareness to a disturbing degree and are just conforming to a different set of rules (which also happen to be the default media opinions of today....curious).

They just like the aesthetic and pretense of rebellion, not rebellion itself. Not that it's really good to be ultra-racist as you say, though I get it. I sought out white nationalist and far-right rhetoric originally out of a sense of irreverence, being drawn to what I wasn't allowed to listen to, and it just so happened to turn out that they actually had a lot of facts to back up what they're saying. It's just that I don't hate anyone for their ethnicity, and I have no problem being friends with any person regardless of race, so I would not call myself racist. If there's anyone I have disdain for, it's fellow white people who are so buck-broken that they have a panic attack if you bring up crime statistics or dare be sceptical of the official Holocaust story. I have so much more love in my heart for someone like Malcolm X or Muhammad Ali than I do for someone like Aids Skrillex.

I dunno, I think Dylan Roof may have gone too far in a few places. However, as a more recent example, Shiloh Hendrix. Now there is a woman I am 100% behind. The self-loathing, prostrating whites who condemn her, I wouldn't trade her for one hundred of them. She's not a musician, as far as I know, but this image is still as punk as it gets.

Ramones were touring with Talking Heads and Johnny would take Tina's stuff so that when she asked where it was he would dangle it in front of her and make her come get it. That was also the tour where he was smacking his gf around in public, shocking the hell out of the Talking Heads members.
Richie had been with the band for a couple of years and he asked for a small cut of the merch income as they were using his name in the logo and he felt like he was pulling his weight (upping the intensity, singing backing vocals, writing songs, etc.) and wanted to feel like a proper member. Johnny vetoed the whole thing and Richie left.

Interesting, I would have assumed Johnny thought the Clash sucked. My thought on the Clash is you had to be there, they aged the worst out of the original punk bands

YIKR?
I think Johnny heard what The Clash were trying to do musically, and liked the intensity and energy, even if he didn't agree with the political sentiment expressed in their songs.
You're definitely right about their music aging like milk, though.
You don't need anything after Give 'em Enough Rope, I M H O.

She raised nearly a millon dollars and started a new life with a new identity I believe, after leaving us with a pretty good speech that received way less attention than it deserved. It feels like the media has memory-holed the entire thing, since it was such a major blow to the white guilt industrial complex and they were losing the narrative, but maybe it's better this way, since Shiloh and her family will at the very least be safe in anonymity. She stood her ground, made her mark, inspired millions, took the money, and left the building. Shiloh won.
