Really tempted to get a midi guitar
>>127042288I was looking into this a few months ago. Which ones are you looking at? I downloaded some guitar to midi plug-in which was supposed to be one of the best out there (can't even remember the name now desu) but the tracking wasn't good enough to actually use it to compose things quickly and easily.
Never going to buy a whole dedicated midi guitar, so I hope the software improves or super good midi pickup systems become cheaper and less ugly.
I took an anon's advice and extended the string section despite kind of not wanting to go through the effort of shifting everything, and I'm glad I did because I'm happy with it. It maybe needs some more mid layers, I don't know.
I'm still not 100% sure on the intro. On paper I like the idea of a slowly building augmented chord (it's a C(b6) chord I think?), to build suspense as the ship flies through space before the brass section (Mars finally comes into view from inside the cockpit), but it needs some work or it needs to be redone. What do you think? Either I could layer some brass halfway through that part so it doesn't end up sounding too empty by the end, or maybe replace it with an organ? But then it feels like I'm just ripping off Interstellar, and the rest of the track is already ripping off Gustav Holst - Mars lol.
And yes, I've come up with an autistic story behind the piece. I plan to write an entire movie in my head but only using the soundtrack because I can't actually make the film.

I really just want something that lets me noodle on a guitar with presets I make on soft synths and apparently it's really good for that. Learning piano/keyboard feels like too much of a hurdle.
I tried the Midi Guitar 2 but it was shit
i need convolvers with more utility !
ok boys, i got the new fl25 update.
The Ghoper tool is damn awesome, does exactly as told.
Tell the a.i. to create a preset and it will do. Now you can create any space, be it from a movie set or what ever.
Best option they add is to remove or add more channels in the master, this reduce heavily cpu usage.
included a new plugin, mobil rack, with tons of moduls you can mix up. For instruments and effects. It might look at first like nothing but this shit is actually huge. Low cpu usage with tons of options.
There are a few more plugins in the effect section i didnt test so far, had a short look at the new emphasy plugin, seems to be a new limiter?

I just realised I'd been paying for a monthly Splice subscription for about two years without ever once using it. >>127050453$12.99 which is less than a tenner monthly. I can't believe I never checked to see if this thing was still going. I'll pay for one more round then pause the subscription and consider selling, so the person who has the account has three months to download whatever they want. There's also 1,476 already bought sounds so the total value of the account would be 3499 sounds. Seriously, if anyone is interested let me know otherwise it will just go to waste.

Beginner questions: is it better to finish an idea with less than ideal sound design/selection, then go back and fix it all up after it's laid out, or do you make sure things sound at least somewhat good before moving on? I got stuck on a short loop trying to get things to fit in and around it and realised I probably could just move on and get more progress that way even if it sounds shit (muddy low ends, stuff clashing a little etc.), rather than bogging myself down in the details that early. Also, is that when it's best to even consider compression, when the full idea is there and you have a clue about when/why you want/need to use it?

I wanna get into beat production and learn to rap. What are the essential (midi) instruments to use? Do I need an Akai sampler? I wanna go in the direction of combining more up-lifting lyrics with ethno/traditional instruments and classic hiphop drums.
>>127072342You don't technically *need* anything other than a computer and some headphones or speakers.
Most beats nowadays are just made in FL Studio, but some still prefer the hardware samplers for workflow reasons.
If you really want to go that route and you're not hurting too much for money, go ahead, it's a perfectly fine way of making beats (with its own pros and cons).
If you have budget constraints, prioritize listening gear such as monitoring speakers (with an interface to connect them) and/or headphones, then maybe a midi keyboard if you want to play the notes instead of clicking them in (better with drum pads for obvious reasons).
If you want to rap you will probably want a microphone too, but at the start you can use your phone I guess (sounds like shit but you're likely not getting signed on day one lol, so if your budget forces you to choose, I recommend the above first).
I'm assuming you already have a computer.
>>127072071i fuck with this, finish/recreate it
Now your music is only as good as your sounds. Despite everything being available online and nothing is hidden, there are no more Daniel Johnstons, nobody gives a shit enough to listen past 1 millisecond to the actual song. If it sounds like shit then why would anyone care. The fact that anyone can produce anything that sounds like what just 25 years ago would have been top quality, expensive, polished music with just a laptop and headphones means there is no more charming demo finds, nobody cares, there is too much other high quality sounding music. A large part of what made people attached to an artist like Daniel Johnston is the "find" itself. It took more effort or luck to come across something that deep so naturally you would give it more of your attention. The "find" is gone, you don't have to know anything about anything to stumble upon something, there is no effort involved with it so why would you care?
and the deeper down the algorithm I go, the more I actually resent the music. Why am I seeing this? This guy must be a shill. Israel made me listen to this dog shit.
Lyrically gifted anons what the fuck does your brain operate like in order to get shit written? I put together my own music doing bass, drums, guitars all myself and then when it comes time to write the fuckin words I am blanked out. I can put a melody together but when I pick words to blabber over it until something clicks it all sounds boring as shit. All sounds cliche, overused, dumb, unemotive, just crap. I can listen to great singers blurt out absolutely retarded lines but it sounds good but here I am constantly worrying about how stupid the words are that I cannot deliver any sort of performance with them and want to change them up but feel like I can never find the right ones. I have gotten a dozen songs or so that have lyrics I could sing and feel and be happy with but they were about real shit in my life and are so completely unique to me and the person they're about/for (It's always my wife except two songs bitching about my exs) that I don't release them to streaming since I doubt they would connect with anyone else. I enjoy those songs, that's not the issue; I want to write some normie bullshit lyrics so I can put stuff out that is vague and ambiguous so the average listener and (You) can hear it and try to act like it fucking means something about your life or the world or some shit.
>>127071239The first way is the common duh answer.
However that answer takes for granted that somebody would have the foresight to know what it would sound like in the future and how to arrange for that.
As a novice, doing the sound design or mixing early on will bring up โproblemsโ and situations that you wouldnโt have in mind if you arrange while ignoring all
that.
So yep thereโs basically no real answer
Except actually THE IDEA is key.
Whether THE IDEA is heavily sound design dependent or not dictates a lot.
SOCIETY does not bring this up when you ask these sorts of questions though
>>127073509>what the fuck does your brain operateIโm just extremely creative and very cultured and more cool in a way that canโt be taught sorry

What they want they already have in such excess that you're dealing with 'drop of piss in the piss ocean' levels of unnoticed if you're actively trying to compete and find mainstream success.
>>127073509>I want to write some normie bullshit lyrics so I can put stuff out that is vague and ambiguous so the average listener and (You) can hear it and try to act like it fucking means something about your life or the world or some shit.yeah because obviously that's what people want. (pic rel: clearly not the case)
maybe you need to break it down further. perhaps your understanding or way of thinking about what makes lyrics "good" or meaningful is fundamentally shaky.
Maybe i'm imagining it but I feel like the taste in this general has gotten considerably worse (boring) in the past year or two
>>127074000It's because I stopped posting music
>>127072071Pretty good for a "shitty old beat". Can definitely hear Lorn's style, but it also reminds me a bit of Danger's July 2013 EP

I still have to write some lyrics on the drum and bass part and finish the rap part lyrics. But after resting and getting rid of ear fatigue. My mix feels off, before I continue to finish the track i would like mixing advice. (please keep it to reaper's native jsfx plugins, I am a total noob to mixing)
https://vocaroo.com/194wsnnOiaEM
Also yeah, I am genrehopping, so this is gonna be a nightmare to mix
>>127074423Hop on Audioz and find the Ozone 11 plugin, use the helper feature (It's not really AI it just pretends to be) and when it finishes running it'll give you a standard set of genre targets it can auto-adjust your track to on the left side menu, it'll probably set it by default to rap/hip hop but try all the options there as a starter point then fuck around a while. It has undo/redo so you can go back if you hate the change you made, and you can use Audiolens (another program, free on developer site) to record bits of songs while you're playing them on your computer and create audio profiles from them to set as the 'target' instead of using the standard genre presets. It works pretty well for a starter point. It isn't magic but if you suck at mixing then it probably has better ideas than you do for beginning.
>>127074542I am making vocaloid stuff. Also, if you heard my track, I dont think it falls under any genre. Wont this just ruin my mix when the parts have to feel more intense/intimate?
>>127074619>>127074423>finish the rap partIf you identify your track by a genre personally then I'm going to assume the program will too. Fuck if I know what genre to call your stuff, I don't make or listen to anything like it so I'm just offering casual input. The plugin I mentioned has a dozen or so plugins built into it which covers most things (EQ, Gain, Limiter, Compression) and then has some ear candy extras. It's a basic (Expensive if paid) all-in-one that should help a lot. If EQ and Compression etc are going to kill the song then something is wrong with the song to start as those and the other available options are used in basically all music nowadays.

>>127074996That is too specific and unique to the individual to answer. Ever watch those 'X amount of producers mix the same song' type videos? Look into sidechaining the drums against the background (pad, violin, whatever has all that reverb). They will punch a bit better, unless it's a creative decision to have the drums mesh and fade into the back as the pads take over.

I usually don't find reasons to bounce things vs. run the midi straight through effects outside of wanting to do particular things like timestretch or working with a really timing sensitive effect like having an LFO controlling another effect for example which could potentially make things sound much different if you shifted the midi input slightly in time (so you'd want to line it up to get the sound you want, bounce, then move it back to where it's supposed to be lol)

Here you go man. Sorry for the wait.
>>127088555First post the raw mix without putting it through some shitty AI mastering service so we can judge it properly.
>>127088325I would start with EQing the vocals. Sounds like there is still a lot of lows and low-mids in there that should be taken out completely. Also more compression on the vocals.
Also the sample rate seems lower than what normally is expected from vocaroo, check the sample rate you are exporting at from your DAW.
>>127088734Holy fuck, brother thanks! I have never seen such a legend in this general.
>>127088746https://voca.ro/11lYyhc7iBmx
>>127088824I think what you're referring to regarding the sample rate was done by the master.
With the vocals, I wanted them to be quite upfront, I was experimenting with treating them more like pop vocals in that way. I am surprised you recommend more compression, there's a good amount. I did let it breathe a little bit in the chorus, I wanted to have a back and forth thing going with the 1176 and LA2A to accentuate the cadence of the vocals, if that makes any sense.
>>127089013I'll need to listen properly with my gear later, but the levels don't sound right to me. Like that lead guitar is just too overbearing and maybe too boxy (but I can't say for definite just listening through my phone). Vocals are alright in the start then get totally drowned out the next minute. The levels are just all over the place. What helped me was A/Bing with a track similar to yours. Put it in your project and bypass the master and bring the gain down so it roughly matches your track. Try to listen to the levels, frequency response, where compression is used, where panning might help. And then after that listen again to your track and perfect it from there. And use SPAN.
>>127088824>the sample rate seems lower than what normally is expected from vocarooBoth vocaroos from the LANDR master and the original posted in
>>127089013 are 44.1kHz sample rater, maybe you meant bit rate?
But even then Vocaroo applies a variable bit rate based on frequency content and dynamics so comparing original (117kbps average) with the LANDR version (124kbps average) doesn't really tell the whole story
>>127089099I'll try that, thanks.
The first half of the chorus has that lead guitar doing the same melody as the vocal which I tried to finesse into working. I knew it wasn't good arrangement but to be honest I didn't like any alternative, like playing the octave instead. I figured it would at least be a way to learn to fix less than ideal arrangements.

I'm leaning towards Reaper because it works on Linux, but part of me likes the idea of being able to record riffs/ideas into blocks and easily mixing and matching those ideas in Live's session view.

think about it physically:
it's the same exciter at a different angle so the difference is there but not.... THERE. it's just a random contrast from a downstroke.
if you were seeking to emulate this with FM or whatever this would be included in the "randomness" category of just shifting the operator or fm amount slightly up or down; or if you're on the real shit you would be alternating the noise source or its filter ; i've never used a synth that lets you actually specify "every other note/gate" though so differentiating up or down strum specifically isn't really a thing on synths though.

Anyone used sumo to come up with sounds? Can you just ask it to give you a duck quack for instance or a cool drum loop
>>127100165Right. I was trying to think physically, just not very good at it yet. I was thinking of cutting the tail of the preceding note when the transient component of the next note hits to emulate the string coming almost to a stop suddenly as the pick/finger touches the string for the second note, but I don't know where to find out if there are still residual vibrations from the first note that are meant to influence the body/tail of the second note (and subsequent notes, at a fast enough tempo) in some way e.g. that might be emulated with a careful filter effect.
>never used a synth that lets you actually specify "every other note/gate" thoughYeah I figure I'll have to make each individual pluck from scratch and arrange them, rather than creating a virtual synth patch that has this mechanism as a live performance-controllable aspect
>>127100789>residual vibrationsresonant body so technically yes. usually people resort to small size reverb, though that tends to be for violin instruments.
somebody told me about pasttofuture reverbs a few threads ago and Iโve been using some of those impulse responses onโฆ wubs.
they do sound appropriate for guitar though.
idk what youโre doing but this is all pretty overkill if using a sample library is an option, or if your goal is to actually sound realistic lol
>>127100828I'm aiming to run the untreated sounds through analogue guitar equipment and rock distortion/chorus etc. to texture it up and record either amp with mic for room sound feel, or back into audio interface, will see which suits best, so if it's more of a rock sound I don't know that the resonant body thing will be relevant

mmm just finished listening to SWAG. It was just okay. Felt like it had pretty heavy 80s/early 90s slow jam influence. All the tracks were pretty unremarkable with nothing really standing out as unique/especially interesting. Biebs has a good voice, for sure, but that's about all I took from it.
I also saw that Thursday released a new track. Geoff is way better at singing, but the soul has been sucked out of the music and it feels like it's just following a standard template. No experimental guitar riffs or rhythms.
