I've noticed I'm like this, but the only exception I make is classical music.

it's depressing when you realize most albums are filled with aimless plodding filler outside of a few songs, 30-40 minutes should've never been the standard

Not most albums, but most artists. If you're going to make accessible music like most rock or pop genres, do it right and make it catchy. It's what those are for. If you're making inaccessible music like progressive or classical, go all out but really make a statement. Simple as.

What the fuck is a hook? What the fuck is a riff? What in the ACTUAL fuck is a lick?

>hook
Catchy, memorable part of a song
>riff
Short, repeated musical phrase that forms the main groove or foundation of a song.
Smoke in the Water is an obvious example.
>lick
Unlike riff, it's not repetitive and serves as, say, decoration or flair in a song.
Sultans of Swing's solo is a good example.
