What is /mu/'s favorite Genesis album? My favorite is Foxtrot.

Seconds Out.

Though I use a parametric eq on the left channel to bring Hackett's guitar up to a better level.

1. Foxtrot
2. Nursery Cryme
3. The Lamb
4. Selling England
5. A Trick of the Tale
6. Trespass
7. Wind & Wuthering
8. Duke
9. And Then There Were Three
10. Invisible Touch

Don't care about the others. Debut is their worst, yeah I'd listen to Calling All Stations again instead of that crap.

Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent.

Their debut has its moments, but it's rather weak compared to the majority of their discography.

I know this is just the American Psycho meme, but Phil never really influenced Genesis as significantly as Tony Banks. Tony was thrilled to hear his songs being played on the radio and was the primary driving force behind Genesis moving toward a more pop-oriented direction.

Not a bad pick for #1. Musically speaking, it's probably peak Genesis. For me, it falls apart with it's disjointed concept, but it remains gripping enough to listen all the way through

I aknowledge SEBTP as the best, but I honestly prefer listening to Foxtrot and Lamb
Supper's Ready is, of course, their undisputed masterpiece, and one of the greatest prog songs of all time
as a matter of fact, I think I'll listen to it right now

The rest are all tossups depending on how I feel day to day. I am so utterly and spiritually devastated that we never got any professional footage of the Lamb tour

Focks and Lamb are the best. Side D is actually amazing and maybe best quarter of the album. the first four songs on Side C kinda drag though but it picks itself up

Four great songs with two ambient "filler" tracks.
The disc 2 haters are just regurgitating what Tony had to say about the album.
I will agree that it is the weakest side of the album, however, but by no means bad.

they're great but just less great than the others. Waiting Room is the first non-great genesis song besides maybe one or two from fg2r. Silent Sorrow however is amazing and enoesque

The Lamb.

Also, I'm surprised by how dull England is considering how fun and energetic Foxtrot and the Lamb are. It's like they decided to lean into all their worst stereotypes for that one album to create an album that seems to be pleading for the destruction of progressive rock, and I say that as someone who prefers progressive rock to the lesser genres that followed it. Progressive rock naturally made more rudimentary musicians seethe, so weak spots like England gave them validation to hate it and call for its demise.

When I was already a prog enjoyer Selling England was the first Genesis I listened to. I knew it was good but I didn't enjoy it much. Then listened to Nursery Cryme and felt in love with it during first listen. Nowadays I love Selling England too, but it's easily the weakest from the Gabriel years ignoring the debut. Anyway, for me it's Foxtrot.

I heard Supper's Ready performed live by Steve Hackett's band, and it totally mogged the recorded version.
It made me realise how sterile the production was, and how po-faced and stilted the performances were.
Hackett made it sound warm, released the groove (which is barely noticable on record) and let the humour come to the surface.

Selling England By the Pound gives me Spinal Tap vibes. It sounds like it's making fun of prog. Like it's holding up a handheld mirror to progressive rock as a genre. The problem is, as far as I can tell, it's meant to be taken seriously. It's an absolute pain to listen to, and I say this as someone who likes progressive rock and Genesis.

I'm honestly bemused that it's considered one of their best albums. I think it's because it was released in the midst of their most creatively successful era, and this worked as a kind of auditory illusion. Following two great albums with one more after it framed tricked people into liking it. It's rare that an album that underwhelming in comparison to what else an artist has done ranks that highly in most peoples minds for that artist, but I guess timing was everything for that album. If it hadn't been framed in the context of their other albums from that time, people would have heard it for what it is.
