Alex G has a lot of listeners and people go to his shows but I think he's just too prolific and uneven so people generally have a few songs or an era they enjoy and there's not a lot of people actually following what he's up to and listening to everything as it comes out.

His affected "indie" falsetto voice sure sucks but his songwriting and arrangements aren't bad.

Probably Trick. But imo a lot his best songs are unreleased or live versions.

Skating was delightful. Almost made me slit my wrist as an indie songwriter but I'm more edgy cause I lack the pop vocal melody talent

I haven't liked what I've heard from him beyond a few songs, and I hate any of the stuff with electronica, but several musicians I like such as Lowertown/Olivia O, Feeble Little Horse, and Momma love him so I guess I'll keep trying to figure out why.

Bad examples... that screeching is such a dumb gimmick. Like the falsetto but worse.

Eh he puts out albums in a normal amount of time. His last one was 2022, 2019, 2017, 2015, 2014, two albums in 2012, and first one was 2010. Hardly a prolific artist.

He has a few cool songs like Gretel, Brick, Witch, but generally I find him extremely mediocre. Especially his first three records, and then more recently. It's lazy uninspired music and he puts no effort into growing or changing his sound. I would argue that Mac Demarco always had a more novel unique sound and made efforts after Another One to shake things up with his songwriting on This Old Dog and Here Comes the Cowboy. I just feel like Mac is worth mentioning because they are of similar success and are peers.

I always think an artist is truly creatively bankrupt when even though they have success they STILL don't branch out in their style and just churn out the same shit over and over for an easy check because they're either afraid or incapable of taking risks.

false, he got better.

his early stuff is unique and essentially inspired an entire generation of indie artists who completely rip his sound, but it's rather immature.

mad respect to Alex for growing out of that and putting out more polished material

There's better stuff he could've taken influence from. I guess he's capitalizing on Wednesday's/MJ Lenderman's fame. I guess ultimately it's a good thing that country is becoming more indie. Album sucks though.

I tried to listen to it but it sucks. I guess indie rock was just a fad for teens.
Every indie now sounds like shit to my ears. Thanks, Steely Dan, Miles Davis and Led Zeppelin.

This is the most boring shit I've ever listened to, it's like a sterilized version of his already most mid shit.

All he had to do was develop the genuinely interesting shit he was experimenting with in house of sugar into something great and it never happened, he settled for mediocrity again.

>Back at his local dive, I ask, why make a track like this? “Two reasons,” says Alex, “One, selfishly, because they’re amazing musicians, and so what they’re bringing to the song, it’s special and I am trying to capture that. And then two, I want them on the album because they’re my people.”

it was never officially available. online archivists scoured the web for every little thing he ever did, including reaching out to his friends and family for self-released tapes. alex is fine with them being online, but he sees them as too unpolished to officially release
