This is her best album, but she ruined it with that awful fake voice that she used on this album. It makes me so mad. She didn't start singing with her real voice until Have One On Me. Sadie is the most painful song for me on this album because it's one of her best songs as far as songwriting goes but it suffers so heavily from that awful affected voice that she invented. I wish she could have just swallowed her pride and sung normally. If you're so embarrassed by your own songs then don't release them. Don't record shitty versions of them just so you can feel like you're above it because you're so shy about being a songwriter. This album is so fucking immature.

You know singers' voices and styles can develop and change as they continue making music right? Doesn't mean her early stuff is "fake," though I do understand why'd you'd say that and why it filters people.

And even she is using an "affected" voice, how is that any different from screamo guys screaming, scatters scatting, hip-hoppers hopping, or basically anything else that isn't just the most straight up "natural" or unadorned delivery? I think these are all valid artistic choices, clearly she wanted her performance to sound strained like this. If it turns you off, you just got filtered mate. She sang it the way she wanted it to sound and a lot of people like it that way.

Of course I know that. I'm not a complete idiot. I said that she's using a fake voice on the Milk-Eyed Mender because that's what it sounds like. She annunciates in a way that is forced and unnatural. It wouldn't be the result of age. It's insecurity and a desire to distance herself from what she's creating and make herself seem like she's above it.

You can change the level at which you're singing to get a different sound out of your voice without using a different voice. She is using a voice that is not hers on most of this album. It's an impersonation of some fictional character. And she doesn't always do it. There are moments on the Milk-Eyed Mender where she's actually singing with her own voice and it sounds perfectly fine, and then she becomes self-conscious and slips back into it. You can actually hear the exact moment that this happens in multiple songs. This, to me, shows that it is indeed fake, and something she did so frequently around this time that she couldn't even control it. Usually she would begin singing in her own voice, probably because she was focusing more on her playing, and then once she was a few lines in, she would slip into the voice again. It was basically a bad habit.

There's a difference between an objective "bitch can't sing" and subjective "I don't like thist style." Thread's full of people praising the album so I'd say you got filtered here.
Which is totally real and valid, never said you have to like what I like :^)

She actually can sing. She's making herself sound bad deliberately. That's what's so frustrating about it.
>>127082314
But in her case, it's not a style, it's a bad habit. She'll start out singing just fine and then at a certain point she would get insecure, and that's why she starts doing the voice. She could have just not done the voice and it would have been perfect. It just makes it seem like she doesn't take herself seriously. Again, if she had just swallowed her pride and sang the songs straight up without the fake goofy voice then this album would have been basically perfect.

interesting analysis which I appreciate vs. just bashing her, but I don't know if you can say for sure that it really was a habit as opposed to an artistic choice. It seems pretty deliberate to me given just how forced and extreme it is. Either way, that's how early Joanna be so if you don't like it I guess you'll just have sing these songs the 'right way' and drop a 'fixed' cover album of Milk Eyed yourself :)

i know you're going to get a lot of shit for it, but i'll be the only one to slightly agree to an extent. the goofy lisa simpson voice is really only a thing on milk/ys (the demos/EP's too, where they're even more prominent) and they very clearly fit with quirky 00s folk where the singers can't sing. in joanna's case, i think it's really only grating on there little babies, which i don't think is a track anyone likes or bats for or defends.
but at the same time, they kind of give milk/ys that vibe that's pretty much gone by have one on me. i'd say even on ys that goofy voice is mostly gone

In all honesty, why is she doing that? Regardless of how fast you're playing a piano or whatever, it's not going to cause you to slightly stand up and sit back down repeatedly like that in any scenario. In fact, doing that probably makes her playing worse. Working the sustain pedals is more difficult when you have to put pressure on your feet and legs to do that.

But why pretend she's doing it for a reason other than exhibitionism? Why patronize people by acting like it's because she's playing the piano? It makes her look stupid because she thinks it's believable that the piano would be the reason that she's doing it, since she would have to believe that causality would theoretically add up. She could just lift her dress up, expose her bare ass to the audience, and then play the piano and it would be better for everybody. She'd get the rush of exposing herself and the audience would actually get to see something hot while not being patronized.

I guarantee you haven't read Joanna's literary influences let alone the best of the western canon to making a claim like that. Writing on Ys is good but it's not even close the level of Divers. The writing on Ys is simpler and easy to understand which is probably why it appeals to your simpleton brain. To understand the genius of Divers takes actually understanding her influences and the history and technique of the poetry and literature she is inspired by. It's not easy and it won't click until you have the knowledge needed because otherwise it's just words

Also, I prefer the company of women to that of men and go out of my way to increase the amount of women that I'm around and decrease the amount of men that I'm around o whenever I have the option, so calling me misogynistic is pointless. I'm really not a misogynist. I don't like it when people are patronizing regardless of their gender. I would be saying exactly what I'm saying now if I were a female. I also prefer the company of women to that of men and go out of my way to increase the amount of women that I'm around and decrease the amount of men that I'm around whenever I have the option, so calling me misogynistic is pointless. You're way stupider than you realize.

>because men are...?
Short tempered, warlike, and generally unpleasant. Another thing is that, unlike women, men become angrier and more antagonistic throughout their lives while women are generally meaner in their early twenties and mellow out later. The point is, calling me a misogynist is pointless even if it is true on some abstract level because women are my favorite of the two genders.
