how did a nation full of critically acclaim artists get raptured by such a mediocre band

Brits had always loved pub rock, it just happened that one finally got really big.

They rode a general wave of 60s nostalgia and mythmaking over boomer pop bands. I was pretty amazed by how bland Oasis was when I finally listened to their music, given their legendary reputation. I think the fact that the band members were such contemptible assholes and constantly in the press for legal issues helped fuel their popularity quite a bit as well. In a way they fused punk sensibilities with the bland 60s pop

It was just good timing, they released their two best albums right around the time that "lad" culture exploded in the UK and were a superbly fitting soundtrack to the kind of normies it drew it.

Most British music in the 80s was middle class southern poofter shit like The Cure, Xtc, New Order, and The Smiths(Even though Mancs will claim they always liked them).
Oasis made it cool for football fans and working class norf fc's in general to like music again, and they saw themselves in Noel & Liam.

dont care for their music but they're genuine men of the people
after all these decades fame still hasn't changed them one bit. theyre still just regular blokes from manchester, and that goes a long way in entertainment.. where it's nothing but fags and snakes

They're not regular blokes. Regular blokes are obnoxious arseholes.

Punk is a pub rock subgenre

Also, British music had been horribly mediocre since the late '80s

NTA but songs like Married with Children do resemble a lot of the Beatles acoustic stuff so I don't know what you're trying to prove other than the fact you don't listen to either band

the oasis sound of three guitars simply strumming heavy chords whilst this guy is more shouting than singing in the mic is very unique to oasis and it is not generic.

it's simple and easy yes. but no other band sounds like them. and it's such a jackshit i don't know about music to call them generic. you can recognize from the first 5 seconds every song they ever did that it's an oasis song.

You're arguing about how the music is arranged or rendered (ie wall of sound, nasal vocals). Not about the melodies and the style of this music, which owe a lot to glam riffs, jangle pop and 60s melodic progressions
Anonymous No.127096308 [Report]
the songs aren't anything special, the singer is. Johnny Rotten's attitude but with an actual good voice.

Liam could sing the phone book and it would sound biblical.

now there's a true legendary working class band

Shaun Ryder had more creativity in his coked up nostril than the Gallaghers put together. Oasis were just a more manageable version of the Monday's vibe with all the weirdness shaved off.

Great British music was mostly made by middle-class art school kids. The Beatles was a big exception.

British music in the 90s was weird because bongs tended to overhype completely mediocre shit like Suede, Blur's first few albums and dozens of other terrible britpop bands all because of Nirvana making headway there, then they ignored the actual good and innovative artists from that era like Slowdive, Portishead, Stereolab, Spiritualized.
It's sad to me that the nation that gave us the later Beatles albums and progressive rock of the 70s devolved into and promoted such mediocrity.

They were probably the best songwriters of the 90s, their B-sides mog most other bands proper albums

Oasis is a weird one for me because i dont usually like low brow stuff but the thing is those two brothers are so honest on and off stage, they are so free of fakeness that other "stars" often have, they are true to themselves and down to earth. Its incredibly endearing. Also, noel objectively makes catchy songs and is a good songwriter

Pills’n’Thrills is great but it’s a little too slick, I prefer Bummed as it’s truer to what they’re about. Their influences are all over the place, just everything the Ryders heard or watched or experienced went right into their music, and Hannett’s raw, sparse production brings out an edge.
