I always died at Radiohead's live arrangements where Thom would do vocals and play the secondary guitar line behind Johnny and they'd stick Ed in the back doing nothing. On Reckoner Thom does vocals and guitar and they put Ed on tambourine for Christ's sake.
Is there anyone more useless than a "Lead" guitarist? The bassist is already playing melody and the rhythmn guitarist or keyboardist can also play melody if they need to.
If anyone can remember the RL Stine novel (I think it was Fear Street) where the protagonist watches a band with 5 guitarists at the school dance I'll be real happy
Also Glenn Branca and Polyphonic Spree did like 20+ guitarists
>>127093590 The bass doesn't typically play the melody but this is a bait post and you know that. A bass line is usually not THE melody. Inb4 the Fall and Joy Division or Death from Above or Lightning Bolt or Ruins or jazz bass heads or fills or whatever I said typically.
>>127093606 >as a lead you can also play the rhythm
I have to say honestly the skillsets are not totally alligned and some guitarists are good at lead but not as good at rhythm. In jazz especially it sticks out when a guy can rip solos but struggles to accompany other instrumentalists solos tastefully

>>127093637 It's not just songwriting. I would bet Mick Jones probably couldn't play rhythm as effectively as Keith Richards, even if they were following the same tab on the same instrument.
>>127093823 But then there would be too much space if the guitarists takes a solo. >They shouldn't. Well, they're going to, and when they do, it's better to have one other guitarist to fill in the space.
>>127093867 But there's not too much space. Listen to Ron Asheton soloing on Funhouse and tell me there's too much space. The Dirt and TV Eye solos are all timers.

If you listen to band like built to spill it can be necessary especially when one or two of them sing. Seeing BtS these days without the full lineup is not the same >rhythm >lead >creative ambient lead textural sometimes even being the synth of the band but as a guitar

>>127093823 If you're a boring listener. How is the guitars lead melody supposed to be given character by the rhythms key playing beneath it. You realize you can play the exact same notes on lead and they'll have a completely different feel depending on the progression it's over

>>127093523 Drive by truckers had 3 when they were at their best (southern rock opera-brighter than creations dark) Hell they might've actually had 4 if you count pedal steel
>>127100101 I want one where it's a circle with multiple necks sticking out all the way around so that it looks kind of like a sun and the guitarist has to stand in the center.
