>>127103626 (OP)First for SCOOCS
Hope you've been memorizing your fretboards
Do I really need a fancy fret leveler if I've got a hunk of wood and sandpaper I can staple to it
>>127103643Most get a leveler or at least a welder's straightedge bar because you need a... straight edge. The wood might be warped but you can still try.
>>127103658>welder's straightedge barthat's a good idea. and now that I look at some prices, I can get an understring bar for pretty cheap
i'm sick of the sound i'm getting outta my mustang. I'm gonna swap in some humbuckers i have lying round from some old les paul.
I'm not gonna cut the pickup holes though, i'm making a cheap generic plate out of perspex.
my question for /gg/ is, red or clear perspex or aluminium i guess?
a jam session was held here tonight. It was fun. I didnt play my guitar much but my friend liked my JM. Went on a gear run for my birthday and got a distortion pedal and a synth pedal. I like them both so probably my last bass pedal purchases for a while. Don't need anymore guitar pedals until I can play it. I want to get better at guitar so bad. More practice very excited for it.
>>127103710very cool good luck
>>127103685why are you asking us you are the one looking at it you dingus
>>127103710looks like you're set fren. happy grinding
>>127103710very cool. i also jammed tonight with my keyboardist. its very frustrating because i know im going to be continually pushed until im a master level improviser but id really just love to sit back in a groove for a song or two.
>t bass in 3 piece
Anyone of you ever play an Ibanez Iceman? An old MIJ model from the 1980s popped up locally and theyโre so goofy looking but Iโm curious. I donโt play metal so itโll be extra goofy playing it.
>>127103723>>127103735Thanks anon. Good luck to you too
>>127103749I also have a hard time keeping up with my friend. He's a lot better than me, so I always try and push myself hard. Whenever I do I fumble over myself, I'm only really decent when playing a few notes. My improv attempts fuck up the pacing.
>>127103685clear, then spraypaint it on the back like a Gretsch pickguard
>>127103822dude i feel you, surely it will get better when you can start writing and recording and you can have a chance to refine a single idea. my keys guy has been playing 30 years i've only been playing for 2, but it's a family thing and all of our stuff is just spur of the moment ideas. he says take a solo and im like bro ive already been improvising for 2 hours im out of ideas

>>127104445I don't even remember what any of it tastes like
>>127104445rip black licorice is probably my favorite candy. however just like circus peanuts there is a huge quality difference between the cheap and good licorice allsorts
>>127104486I always called circus peanuts bananas because I'm retarded
>>127104486There used to be a candyshop next to the theater me and my dad used to go to when I was little. He'd always get those rope licorice that was black but brown in the middle. It seemed like quality stuff. I kind of miss that.

>>127104827people have been killed for less. i know this is a /gg/ but i wonder if learning piano will make me a better guitarist?
>>127104996Maybe a better musician, but not necessarily a better guitarist. I knew piano before I started guitar and they just get me a different perspective.

i've been practicing 1-2 hours every day for 2 years. has anyone here ever practiced 8+ hours per day? is there a point of diminishing returns?
>>127105289optimally people keep saying 15 mins a day, but i believe a couple of hours a day is probably the best to get you 80% there
started too late in life? 6 hours a day probably will get you over that last 20% bump, not counting noodling around sitting on the couch etc.
Apparently throwing roses on your bed helps with room acoustics when recording guitar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyrjDeGlBgU
>>127105423then you can look at all the greats, what did they do all day? scroll tik tok? nah they were playing and practicing autistically
Have you ever played a really loud amp? How was it?
I want one day to have private use of a really big space, like an airplane hangar, and a 100W JCM800, just to fuck around.
>>127105440i usually plug into my 2000w RMS PA, shit starts feeding back because my guitar room vibrates so hard my strings starts vibrating if your not double hand muting or whatever its called, when you use the palm of your hand and your fretting fingers to mute all the strings you are not playing.
its fucking awesome when you get the groove going and you feel shit rock your body though
i thank god every day im not a rentcuck
>>127105459what you dont want an amp sim for your apartment?
>>127105289I play music like 30 minutes a day but I think it really just depends on the kind of person you are. Some people benefit from prolonged periods of intense focus others need to assimilate more gradually. I get a lot out of my incremental improvements day to day doing 30 minutes or so. I also play like 7 other instruments and have a bunch of other hobbies, so it feels natural for me to just flit around. Other people are probably more singular.
I've played guitar for two decades, and my first bass is coming in the mail soon.
I got stuck learning lefty, genetically and memetically, so they're fucking impossible to come by physically.
That being said, how much different do they feel to play? I know finger-style is vastly different between the two, what should I prioritize learning if I want to expand my capability beyond basic pick-playing? Any song recommendations for someone with experience learning this?
>>127105440I have a superlead on top of a 4x12 in my bedroom. Generally I close the window if I wanna turn it up
>>127105574Iโm a lefty and I play bass. The main thing is muting, and it happens naturally with muscle memory. As soon as I start thinking about muting it becomes stilted.
If you want thereโs this website made by this turboautist that can give you techniques and exercises: https://www.studybass.com/
>>127105289Tom Morello once said in Guitar World magazine to practice for one hour every single day, no excuses
>>127105440I had a Line 6 120w for a few years before selling it, my friend couldn't hear himself drumming if I turned it up past a quarter. You're wasting your money on amps more than 50w unless you're gigging at venues bigger than the average room.
>>127105594Being good at playing doesnt mean he's good at teaching
>>127105423>>127105569>>127105594thanks for the replies. i did start late but i feel like i have made excellent progress during the time frame for my age. unfortunately i have a lot medical problems from the military and im worried i can only absorb so much knowledge or rather memorize it in one day. some players have said to instead focus on the things you're good at already to push them into mastery level but i genuinely have no idea how to accurately assess myself in that regard. i have written down my goals though
>>127105605well he must be an amazing teacher then!
>>127105574i don't want to discourage you but there are tons of things to learn playing finger style on bass including raking, ghost notes, string crossing, slapping, double thumb. if you want my honest opinion you should focus on the genres of music you like and use those techniques and just practice very rudimentary technique for 5-15 mins every day. advanced slapping takes for fucking ever to develop
>>127105289>>is there a point of diminishing returns? When your parents kick you out in your early twenties, you realise you were just a noodler and you don't know shit about anything. Also the only way to survive is to work jobs you don't want to do.
Best thing they ever did for me really.
>>127105641The only people I've heard who actually practice for 8+ hours a day are the guitar autists like pic related
>>127105641>have no idea how to accurately assess myself in that regardrecord yourself, view it, join a community and get someone elses opinion

>>127105696that's actually pretty good advice, thanks
>>127105696>they will just shit on you and not help youSounds accurate
>>127105641I have had a few concussions that radically altered my perception and information processing capacity and Iโm telling you it really doesnโt matter music is like learning a language it takes place beneath the surface in a lot of ways. The most important thing is the quality of your practice not the quantity. Also itโs not really about getting gud itโs just about doing it.

>>127107774they're difficult to turn, but also, they turn the string very slowly. so they never get accidentally bumped, and you never overshoot. I like them, i've had a set on my tele for about six months and no issues. they bite even .007 strings no problem, just run it through, tighten it, and tune it, zero winding. you could probably oil them manually from the looks of it.
>>127107793I have a set of guyker locking tuners myself (with the normal knobs), the locking nuts come off exposing the gears inside so yeah you can just open up and clean or oil them

Improvising is a cool skill but if you want to get paid to play music, it's not really that important. Most people want to hear the songs they like, not some 10 minute improvised guitar solo. Maybe that'll work for your side project but it's not going to get you bookings.
>>127105289Yes, back in my teens and early 20s I would play between 5 and 10 hours a day during certain periods and those were my most substantial growth spurts for both technical ability and writing riffs and songs. By my mid 20s I had recorded multiple EPs and played large capacity shows with the three bands I played in, two as the guitarist/singer. As long as youโre feeling it, no, it wonโt be diminishing returns.

He's a workaholic and tells me he's still constantly learning. He sets himself insane challenges, like learn a Dream Theater song by ear and master it in a couple of days. I can barely manage power chords and the pentatonic scale. He's a really humble guy too. Makes me fucking sick.
>>127109075Retard here: why are there two sets of EQ controls? Do the bass/mid/treb knobs turn off when you use the sliders?
>>127109076>>127109089He was doing Buckethead-like shit in the early 90s. He's just not a autistic wanker who imposes shit where it doesn't belong. Just like Frusciante. Both can do a lot more than the specific take of a style in the bands they happen to be in.
>>127109005>excel way before they have the age to monetize their talentBecause they are children and they don't know what money even is yet. That's why most bands get screwed by their first managers when they first get famous.
>psuedo scientificI'm the only one rooted in reality. You are off in some dream world thinking that there are people at the highest level of musicianship living as starving artists and that somehow there is no correlation between your ability to play and making a living off your playing.
>>127109069Grow up. Being a musician is a job once you grow out of your teenage years. There is a reason that every band you know the name of and reached a massive level of success breaks up and comes back together. Money.
>>127109118>dream theaterHeโs a gay faggot lol
>>127109159All bands are faggots lol imagine going around with a group of guys because you need to make money lol. Suck my dick you stupid pussy
>>127109158Morello: Fully jewish, would rather complain about Trump than play
Dan Auerbach: Half jewish, top 10 modern blues player, doesn't complain, just makes bangers
>>127109162Go back to playing Oasis, peasant.
>>127109191I donโt play oasis lol. As a matter of fact I donโt play songs other people have written period
>>127109172Who gives a shit. I don't like his politics either, but we're talking about music. And I prefer being grounded. Not given to fantasy and delusions about his skills. He isn't shit.
>>127109203You misspelt "can't".
Some people are committed to being angry and negative and they want everyone else to be as frustrated and unhappy as they are. Leave them alone. Responding to them at all just gives them the opportunity to reinforce the neural pathways they've etched for themselves.
im so tempted to snap one up now but i just know that in 3 months theyll be on the used market for half the price of new
>>127109236Iโm not angry you're just retarded
>>127109225No donโt because when I play instruments I play original music that I create every time because Iโm an artist not a dumb faggot like you are
>>127109157The dial knobs are the pregain stage, sliders are post gain. You shape what is going into the gain stages with the knobs, then shape your overall tone with the sliders (like you would with the dials on a traditional amp).
>there is no shred master who doesn't want to make a living off playing guitar and takes the noble path of treating it as a hobby while doing a 9-5 in some other field.
thatโs literally me doughbeit
https://voca.ro/11S9VpJXhHq7
alright I think I'm gonna start learning chords now
>>127109238I reverse headstock? Doesn't seem so good.
>>127109277Good intermediate but nothing special. There is a reason you are working a day job.
>>127109359had the original version a few years ago, great guitar but the non locking bridge kneecapped it
this is exactly what i had been hoping for, but again its an absolute ball busting at 2 grand as they lose like half the value the second you buy it
>>127105440If you buy those 100w+ heads you must also buy an attentuator so you won't destroy your ceiling, walls and eardrums
A 0.5w-1w tube amp is already loud for headphones/studio monitors, 5w will rock your tiny ass apartment/room
That's why every nigger has a Spark or Katana, so they can practice at high volumes without destroying your hearing
>>127109252>I'm an artist
>>127109403you really do have to practice at 100% volume to not sound like shit at 100% volume. i do it with a very long guitar cable, and standing outside the house in the back yard, and slowly getting closer to the 300 watts of tube power, one dozen six L six tube. i have to make adjustments by turning the guitar off and walking in and then walking out again before turning it up.
it's just a different creature to control a legit 100 watt tube amp that is full on rocking. the thing is a safety hazard first of all and just because it sounds right with the master at 10% doesn't mean it'll sound like 'that but louder' at 100%, so you kind of have to dial it in at dangerous volumes, and then just live with it at lower volumes as best you can.
but once you get the hang of it there's literally no feeling in the world like hundreds of watts of overdriven tube and eight speakers that feel like an earthquake under your feet. there's a visceral painful detail when you're drowning in volume.
>>127109403just play at 50W volume?
this fucking loser
>>127109376 heartbreaker literally banned me for posting a vocaroo lmao
go swab the shop floor you schizo freak, or better yet practice with some of that junk Craigslist garbage you have in your moms garage instead of seething over your betters on the internet

>>127109467can confirm, or at least practicing with high gain and or compression. it makes your muting mistakes louder
>>127108294Youโve tasted it now, beware anon, new gear acquisition syndrome has destroyed many a playerโs wallets and credit scores. What kind of SG?
playing unplugged helps fundies much better than amplified
>>127108744Sounds like you spend an inordinate amount of time concerned with what other guitarists have going on. What do you have going on, anon?
>>127109403Nope. I have a super lead and a 4x12 not a katana
>>127109435Yup
>>127107545It's green wood that they couldn't afford or be assed to season properly, so they put it in an oven for a few hours and send it to the woodshop for production.

is this how you write tabs

>>127109859pretty much. sometimes people add a beat track to the top so it better communicates a sense of rhythm
>>127109530>new gear acquisition syndrome has destroyed many a playerโs walletsthat's the thing about buying nice gear though, eventually it forces you out of the poorfag habit of "filling the void" with another pedal or cheap guitar. if you have any will power whatsoever you just end up with better financial habits.
>>127107408jazz is literally a secret club, you never hear people who play jazz explaining what theyre doing, they always talk about their music in terms of emotion
even if you read jazz books they just expect you to learn jazz standards and learn by rote by copying the best recordings of those standards. no one will really tell you what theyre doing unless you look really hard for obscure jazz mid level jazz books where they accidentally explain what theyre actually doing
Dropping 1% of one's net worth on a used guitar: dumb or no dumb?
>>127110002If it puts a smile on your face who cares
>>127110002Dumb unless you're paying a local luth
>>127109467Nothing makes you serious up like hearing all your imperfections and playing quirks amplified at 100 watts
>>127109859Use a program to write tabs. Guitar Pro for instance
You can write tabs in MuseScore too which is freeware
>>127109630yt ppl dont season they guitars

Fender comes to you and asks you to play only pic related for 3 years. No other guitars allowed.
Name your price.
>>127110118One hundred billion dollars
havent picked up the guitar in years, never could play before that either. but now i really want to start again. my plan is tho do some finger exercices on the fretboard (like 5-10 minutes) and then learn two of my fav songs with youtube tutorials (gimme danger and N.I.B) a day. what do you think? also should i throw in some beginner theory or nah
>>127110118$70k yearly. BUT I'm gonna put a Tele bridge on it.
>>127110118>Three pickup systems: New Fender Acoustasonic Shawbucker; Fishman Under-Saddle Transducer; Fishman Acoustasonic Enhancer this is torture
>>127110175you can develop technique just by learning songs but the problem with just learning songs is that you are doing it entirely by feel and memory. once you can play through the song play it to a metronome and shift the tempo up or down by 15 bpm
>>127110118I need a better finish
>>127110175>should i throw in some beginner theory or nahIve been playing for decades and just recently started back at basics to fix bad habits and expand my knowledge of theory. You absolutely should
>>127110214I would rather shoot myself than do something like this
>>127110214>>127110226thanks guys, will take your posts into consideration
>>127110118Why did fender choose to make this instead of a reliable semihollow?
>>127110247well you didn't learn the fucking song if you can't play it in time lol
>supposed to meet up with new band this weekend
>we don't have a practice space
I could just pay for one but nah apparently it's easier to practice outside in Florida heat
PEACE AND LOVE TO MY OLD BAND MATE JAZZ LISTENIN' JAN
this is an interesting part, I wonder if it can make a good sound
>>127110325i can read schematics but i wish i knew how resistors caps and diodes effect tone
>>127110299I donโt learn other peopleโs songs period lol. What you describe sounds mind numbing
>>127110425that would explain why so many vocas here are out of time
>>127110353diodes are usually used for hard clipping distortion
>>127110353resistors and capacitors often form filter networks with cutoff frequency 1/(2*pi*R*C), you can tell which ones get passed and which are cut from the circuit, diodes are often used for their ~0.7V drop
>>127105289at my peak i was playing 8 hours a day, there's no diminishing returns. if you want to be exceptional at anything you live, breath, eat and sleep that thing. 2 hours a day is good though and as long as you're consistent and use that time wisely you'll make noteworthy gains
>>127110425if you can't find joy in playing your favorite tunes than music isn't for you, try knitting faggot
Okok, I'm going to wait until payday next Friday, and if the guitar is still available, I'll order it. Someone made in offer on it already; I'm a little nervous.
>>127110497>>127110502interesting. it was eye opening seeing a pedal have like 50 resistors in it
>>127110516My favorite tunes are the ones I write
>>127110596too bad they're out of time, out of tune and show and utter lack of talent
be an avant garde faggot if you want, people can be happy with that i guess, but pretending like you're too good to learn from the past is why your family wants you dead
Do you feel like playing when you can't, but don't when you can?
>>127110629Too bad youโre a bitch lol
>>127110629holy projection
>>127110752LOL YOU'RE SO FUCKING WITTY OMG LETS ALL LEARN MUSIC WITHOUT LEARNING ANY MUSIC HOLY SHIT YOU'RE RIGHT ITS SUCH A GOOD IDEA
i legitimately hope everyone you love leaves you
poor soul. the metronome was more than he could bear
i'm a better composer than anyone else so i just listen to my own stuff
at least you know one person is listening to it
I'm a bad man... Yaldve learnt by now ong. Imma nightmare on the streets dawg. Gonna get my nut.
>>127111120Take yer swing...
You act tough online but you come across a real man like me in the streets your looking at your feet. And watching your tone like a good little slug. End of. If your who I think you are id knock you out with one punch you little pimp. You any kinda artist?

>>127105974what do the push pulls do
Chinese strandberg clone with the great reviews came in.
... it looks like someone tried to wrench out the bridge pup and they fucked up the output jack and grounding wiring.
I will try one exchange and if that guitar's shit isn't together I'll just refund and maybe buy a used tube amp instead.
Everything else on the guitar was the great, the neck and fret access were a dream compared to my LP
>>127111467dave's world of fun stuff set up a chinaberger and it was a pile
>>127111481There've been a couple, this one was an E-ART which are unusually affordable with a lot of attention to detail, even Elmo K off youtube loved their starter strat. I know phil mcknight did a review/teardown and they were even using full size pots and korean-made PAF knockoffs, for the 3 seconds I had clean humbucker sound it sounded almost on par with my MiJ lp, but the jack (maybe the wiring?) is fucked and it keeps squealing.
