I really really like house arrest, scared famous, and FF, but I still manage to struggle with this one after all these years. Not sure if it's too hazy or what. Still, there's always a decent chance of me randomly singing For Kate I Wait during the day, so that's something.

I hope you keep trying. I think it's arguably his best and most unique

I most certainly will. Are you a fan of the cleaners from venus at all? Martin Newell was a pretty brilliant guy, a precursor to Ariel in many ways.

The Ballad of Bobby Pyn, Gray Sunset & the title track are the keys that will unlock the album the for you as they did for me. It is a total bummer record but it's such a beautiful, romantic sadness. If you like Cleaners From Venus then The Doldrums should be among your favorite Ariel records because he is at his most sincere. He means every word he sings - it is an album about depression, childhood, self-loathing, and also about its own creation (the lyrical content of Haunted Graffiti refers to this). It's like the antidote to post-modern irony. It is to modern music what The Bible is to Infinite Jest

Hope he pulls through. As much as a controversial figure he is I still would like to have him around

In a better world, there would be a 33⅓ book on this album.

I heard that he's coming back with a new album this year. I never listened to the Dark Side stuff like Never Made a Demo or The Key of Joy, are they legitimate or just shitposts?

60% of the new album is rerecordings of that material. missing some of my favs but he generally picked the best of the bunch. substack releases too

Yes Im a massive fan and discovered him through hearing the cleaners at a record store which I had initially mistaken for ariel pink. Martin Newell is a brilliant artist and all of his records are worth checking out but that run in the 80s was insane. Don't forget about the Brotherhood of Lizards if you havent checked them out as well. Have you taken the part time pill yet?

The only thing I wish he had done was repurpose Footsteps in some way but maybe he'll put it on a new odssods compilation or something
