Properly categorizing music listeners
By how they discover new music
>Spotify/Tidal/Deezer recommendations
Are the likeliest to fall under the spell of FoTMs and the latest industry plants without realizing it. Will gladly talk to you about the merits of acts such as Girl in Red or Peggy Gou
>Youtube algorithms
Know all about city-pop, japanese jazz (actually just Ryo Fukui and Casiopea), and slavic fusion from the 70s. Don't care much for anything else, but they don't need to anyway.
>Tiktok hits
Can barely be labeled as ''music listeners'', given just how much time they spend with completely butchered versions of already questionable songs. Sometimes you really wonder where the hell are their favorite artists coming from, to the point where they're more likely to stump your with their playlists than a Berklee grad would
>Rateyourmusic
There's a very large spectrum of RYM users that extends from the most normgroid mouthbreathing NPR-approved consumer of safe artsy music to the almost tryhard-level explorers of obscure music that isn't even remembered by the people who made it. In other words, this powerful tool for discovering music all depends on the user's skill level. Still, the most typical RYMer of current year will run you over with their blinding love for Parannoul and Magdalena Bay.
>Last.fm
Secretely hosts the most based recommendation system of all mainstream music platforms, but it's unfortunately underused by its social credit obsessed scrobblers. They more than likely won't stop playing the same songs to you over and over again.

>Soundcloud
Its users have built up highly impressive decks of obscure and digitally endangered music that leave you wondering if what you're listening to is actually good or not. Will not shy away from playing DJ mixes in the car, only interjecting with insightful comments such as ''fire'' or ''woooooo''. They know how to have a grand old time
>FM Radio
You're not sure if these people actually exist until you meet them. Not everybody cares about music to the same extent that you do, and it's okay.

>Personal recommendations
The realest ones belong here.

I haven't mentioned all categories ; only the biggest ones. If you have anything else to add, please go ahead.

will always hover around variations of hip hop and never venture beyond genre tourist status for everything else

What about Spotify users who have an entire hard drive of pirated music they also listen to?

It's still useable, though it feels a bit ironic to see BTS and Sabrina Carpenter highlighted on its front page lol
