It's a classic case of the Beach Boy's cutting out great songs for slop that Mike (and Al desu) wanted on. Surfs up as a song is fantastic just not a mellow listen.

Dunnp why. Dennis was a legit male model but Carl had a bit of a glow up as he lost weight/grew a beard. Its a bunch of guys who weren't that cool post early 60's doing their own thing in the 70's. Something charming about that in hindsight.
