When did you realise this was the best Depeche Mode album?

It's definitely a grower, I used to think it was boring besides the singles, but Sister of Night, Bottom Line and Insight are among their most underrated songs

Itโ€™s not but itโ€™s their last good album, sadly.

Nah, it's like a dull, overlong trip hop album with a couple of very good songs.

Every album since Ultra is better than Ultra. Yes, I remember that Spirit exists. No, that doesn't change my mind.

The Sinner In Me is my favorite DM song and the only song on Memento Mori that I'd consider cutting is Caroline's Monkey, and even that's a debatable cut.

How can you not like anything after Ultra, but without including Ultra?

ultra is a really good album. i love the tracks 1-11 and 18-20 but the live tracks, painkiller and slowblow idk why they're there. surrender and freestate are timeless masterpieces that I can listen to forever. the love thieves and barrel of a gun are really good too.

also i inherited the love to depeche mode from my parents, one of the only cd's in our car is delta machine and so it was one of the albums i listened to the most, my dad has their whole blue cd box set collection and vinyl collection. it's really cool how they can do rock/alternative style music but also electronic music in a different album and i really love all their albums and think each one of them is quite unique and has its own charm.

i don't think it's their best album tho. it's really good don't get me wrong but i personally think sounds of the universe is a really good blend of their older and newer styles and they execute it so well, it's almost like a 'transitional' album for them, because right around it are delta machine and playing the angel which are really good blends of electronic and alternative, really atmospheric music. and then sounds of the universe is this more experimental style album that always had its own charm. i think if i had to pick one album as 'the best album' i would pick sounds of the universe but it's really close and ultra would be my next pick, then delta machine, playing the angel, songs of faith and devotion, violator, then memento mori then spirit, in that order. all of their albums are really good and i like them a lot, they bring a really comfy sense of nostalgia whenever i listen to them.

except exciter. that thing can burn in a pile of trash.

but by far the best depeche mode song in my opinion is walking in my shoes. it just has such a nostalgic atmosphere beyond any other song and it's hard to listen to it without closing my eyes and tearing up...

it's hard to top Violator. Every single track is great.

they've had quite a long run, haven't they? also love In Chains, Corrupt, John the Revelator, Precious, Damaged People, Cover Me.

My fav always changes, they made A LOT of good music. But for me, it usually is Playing the Angel.
https://youtu.be/T6ijQpWABAI Lately I haven't been able to stop listening to this one. Violator (obviously) and Construction Time Again also fancy my ears a lot. The Sinner in Me is probably one of my top songs ever.

From Violator to ULTRA is their peak. I used to not care much for SoFaD but I count it as equal among the other two these days.

What annoyed me is when I finally got to see them live for the first time, it was during...the Exciter tour...Exciter fucking sucks. Then everything after that was Just Okay to It Sucks Too. The newest one is a return to form, it's just so fucking annoying how these bands Have a great sound and vibe, then decide to skew into all this fucking middling bullshit for 20+ years, then "return to form." The Cure was the same way.
