Videogame OSTs
I am really getting into videogame OSTs lately. The limitation to what they had to work with creates pure soul. They have to make the best out of their limited tools.

I love them. If I could marry an album, it'd be these.

Came here to post Chrono Cross.
Yasunori Mitsuda worked wonders on this soundtrack. Despite being programmed completely with the PS1 soundchip and using no samples, the sound is incredibly lush. That's not to mention the distinct world music/Celtic flair much of the soundtrack has that makes it standout to this day.

As an aside--I'm usually not a big fan of this sort of thing, but Yasunori Mitsuda put together a reunion tour concert for the soundtrack in 2019 and it's absolutely killer. Nails the original's unique sound while adding a bit of prog-rock virtuosity and expanding on certain weaker tracks.
Here's the rendition of Dragon God + the complete playlist. Highly recommend you give a few tracks a listen, anon:

The absolute madman added the finger-sliding sounds deliberately to make it sound more authentic.
I can't find a source on this so I may be misquoting but I'm fairly certain I read as much--Because that was my first question as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZxDejNkLTI is the best video game song ever (the first half, anyway, which is actually in the game; the second half is not). I especially appreciate the use of erhu in a western-style orchestral piece.
This entire game has banger-ass music, especially for 1994.

thing about vgm in the past was that the composers experimented a lot, you'd have drum and bass / acid jazz / ambient techno all in one game. Like Ape Escape for instance, what a masterpiece.

It was made by From Software AKA the Dark Souls guys, but the composer is different. As far as I know it only had a sequel called Evergrace 2 in Japan and Forever Kingdom in the west, the OST is also incredible

It's me. I'm going to say the cringe thing.
Hate me. I'm right.
Nobuo Uematsu is this century's great composer.

I think this might be one of the most underrated Nobuo Uematsu pieces. No one ever talks about it since it was tied to FFXI and the live concerts, but it's fucking beautiful

this. kids who play video games are desperate for validation and they have no taste. all the stuff that gets propelled forward as good music tends to be boring final fantasy-style quasi-classical shit because that's what sounds serious and important to them. earthbound is easily the greatest video game OST ever made, it's not even close

As I said in >>127166346, Uematsu is the only video game composer who I would describe as a genius. He is genuinely an artist like nobody else in his chosen medium. Final Fantasy would be nothing without Uematsu.
