Got canceled for saying native american headrests are cool

I think most people forgot about that. That was a couple years before cancel culture anyway. Weirdly, Kliph Scurlock got more backlash for criticizing him for it.

I don't know. Wayne seemed to snap in the late 2000's. The music video for Watching the Planets seems like the earliest sign of that. From In a Priest-Driven Ambulance all the way through Yoshimi it seemed like the Flaming Lips could do no wrong as far as making the smartest move at every given time and always coming out with something that sounded completely new and fresh and then it just stopped. They came out with At War With the Mystics, which seemed like a massive stepdown particularly for Wayne's songwriting, and after that it all just fell apart.

They peaked in the Embryonic/Terror era.

Did they do anything worthwhile besides crowd surf in a gigantic see through ball?

Embryonic was alright but should have been better. The Terror is a truly dull and uninteresting album that fails both in terms of songwriting and creating an interesting atmosphere. Wayne tried so hard to add to its lore by telling Rolling Stone about Steven Drozd's relapse because he knew this and need to give midwits a reason to think it was good.

To each their own. The Terror is one of my favorite albums in general and Look, The Sun Is Rising is one of my favorite songs in general.

Yes. The music that they released from 1990 through 2002 is their best run and the reason they're still making music. With the exception of HIT, every album from that period is really solid while being really fresh and different than the last one. If you don't like any of the albums from that period then they're probably just not for you.

I should specify that HIT to Death is not a bad album, it's just not on the same level as the other albums that they released during those years.

They peaked in their 90s with transmissions

Clouds Taste Metallic is far better than Transmissions. What Transmissions does, Clouds does better. That said, the Flaming Lips have a very obvious best album, and it isn't either of those.

I'm going to get a ton of shit for addressing the elephant in the room, but the three albums they made in the "no guitars" era are their best albums by far and are what pure creative freedom sounds like. You'll now freak out and give me shit for saying that, but the truth is, those albums are why so many people love this band and probably why they still exist at all. If they had ended with Clouds Taste Metallic we probably wouldn't be talking about them right now. After Yoshimi, they were basically done, though. I'm sorry for being so blunt. I know you're all very upset now.

I wouldn't say peaked but bith of those albums are very good (especially Embryonic) and everything else since has been pretty bad. I didn't even listen to the last two.
Basically it's all Miley Cyrus' fault.

The Terror is a forgettable album. Look is okay but then the album immediately plummets.

Having too many albums and ideas, Wayne has put out so many phenomenal ideas and projects but he can't always win.
