Sabbath set and important precedent by eschewing keyboards almost entirely. Later bands like Priest and Thin Lizzy made dual lead guitars a metal staple, effectively killing keyboards until much later in the 90s (black metal/power metal brought them back).

They started sucking and watering down their sound HARD after Machine Head for the most part (besides some songs here and there, notably Burn and Stormbringer, which are S tier classics) and that was in 1972. The rest is basically tepid boogie rock that aged like milk in the summer heat, which is partly why Blackmore wanted to form Rainbow in the first place for a fresh start, which also quickly decayed into bland late '70s AOR slop when Dio left.

I think a lot of it has to do with how influential Black Sabbath was on modern music, especially punk, which is interesting, since the first generation of punk rockers regarded them as "Boring old farts", but, for some reason, the second generation started to pick up on what they were doing, or had done when Ozzy was in the band, started adapting that sound to punk, and then called it "Crust".

And then at the turn of the century, The Osbournes had their own hit TV show on MTV, even though there was almost no music, and it was more of a sitcom version of Big Brother.

Maybe if Led Zep and DP did the same thin, zoomers would like them just as much.

Early '90s, they were seen as old hat post-Perfect Strangers (losing Gillan again didn't help) and they didn't get a big boost in popularity by the grunge bands publicly naming them as an influence like Zeppelin and Sabbath did. In the '90s the only new bands you'd hear acknowledging Purple were bands like Dream Theater who were seen as lame.

In Europe they're still considered pretty important thanks to their influence on power metal.
