The Popeyes chicken sandwich is very good. I must have been in a test market because I had one months before they became a big thing, and I thought it was noticably good. “Neal’s death had hit me harder than I knew; I’d been obsessing on the loss of one of the most inspiring people I’d ever known personally. At one point in the show, I entered a state of total brain-sag — frighteningly, nothing that was being played made any sense to me. I was so panicked that I stopped playing to try to figure it out.
“Even worse, I suddenly noticed that Jerry was glaring at me from across the stage — something that had never happened before. I was so distressed that I stared blankly back at him.
“After the show, as I was trying to slink out without anyone noticing, I encountered Jerry at the top of the stairs leading to the dressing room. He grabbed me by the collar, and snarled, ‘You play, motherfucker!’ and shoved me aside. I tripped over my own feet and fell down the stairs right on my ass. Jerry was normally such a sweetheart that I was shocked beyond belief at being physically manhandled by him. I must have provoked him beyond reason, something I promised myself I would avoid assiduously in the future.”

I love Phil Lesh 100%, but he is a total goober. But it's important to not let peoples appearance skew how you value their work/actions. I think he leaned into that look though. I read his autobiography and it was very good. He had some cool looks in the 60s, but he doesn't seem to be about that.

How long do you give yourself to connect with a guitar?
>>127166679>>127166654Thanks. I've heard it's good but I'm worried about the sound since it seems like a blend between a tele and strat and I can't find any videos comparing the sound to either of those guitars.

https://voca.ro/1g7ptDdDmDWk
>>127166796https://voca.ro/1n3Sc1Tsb9SH
>>127166754You'd have a humbucker that usually gives a very clean sound, and a P90 that gives a warm but relatively punchy single-coil sound. It's a rare combination but, in my experience, a very good one if you want to make both soft dream pop and grungy hard stuff.
It's a very versatile guitar and you could extensively mod it without it being too much a piece of work and with great results, for instance swapping the pickups of course, and also putting a push-pull for the humbucker if it doesn't come by default (which it should).
But you shouldn't even compare this one with a tele or a strat because it's a completely unique setup. You're not having a strat sound and I'm not familiar with the tele at all, but I know for a fact unless you split the humbucker you won't have a single-coil sharp sound, and strats as a matter of fact all have a capacitor that makes the treble "bleed" in high frequencies which makes them sound the way they do. I don't know about teles though.
Like I said, and honestly, if you want to sound like a strat or tele you can absolutely go for that G&L and mod the fuck out of it for sure. I would have so much fun splitting the humbucker, adding a capacitor to the pickup circuit, eventually changing the P-90 for a humless, etc.
The guitar is beautiful on top of that.

NARRATOR (gravelly, tired):
The day started like any other. Hot wind, cold coffee, and regret waftin' through the air like the stink of a blown tube amp.
That's when he walked in again.
(Door creaks open, bell jingles)
Mountain.
They say he ain't a man, not really. More like a concept in cargo shorts, drifting from one Guitar Center to the next. Leaves behind a trail of confused employees, broken input jacks, and a stench that ain’t natural nor explainable by science.
He came in wearin' a sleeveless flannel, faded from years of sweat and shredded dreams. His hair looked like a tornado hit a ZZ Top record, and he carried that damn Epiphone SG like it was forged in the fires of Mt. Discount.
MOUNTAIN (cheerful, off-kilter):
Afternoon, sport. Just here to give my SG her weekly run.
She’s been achin’ to sing.
NARRATOR:
That damned SG. It’s got a cracked headstock and a sticker that says “Not For Sale—Spiritually.” The man strummed a single chord and all hell broke loose.
(Fuzzed out distorted chord, feedback whines like a banshee)
The walls trembled. A Roland JC-120 caught fire. Some kid in the acoustic room started weeping. One of the employees tried to stop him. Poor kid didn’t know you can’t put out a wildfire with a lanyard and a polite request.
EMPLOYEE (panicked):
Sir! Please! This is a place of business!
MOUNTAIN (softly, almost sad):
Business is boomin’, bucko.
NARRATOR:
Then came the song. Wasn’t quite a cover of “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer, but it wasn’t not that either.
It was warped. Slow. Like he was playin' it through a puddle of time.
Every note hung in the air like cigarette smoke in a confession booth.
Folks tried to leave, but they couldn’t. Not 'til the loop pedal gave out.
One guy said he saw God, and she looked annoyed.
And just when we thought the worst was over… it happened.
(Wet squelching sound. Distant gasps. A cymbal crashes.)
NARRATOR:
No one ever sees it coming.
Not even him.
MOUNTAIN (gentle, sincere):
Well, it happened again.
Sorry about the Fender wall.
NARRATOR:
He left the same way he always does. Quietly. Mysteriously.
Leaving behind only the smell of flame-grilled sorrow and reverb that’d make a grown man doubt his choices.
(Door creaks open. Bell jingles. Fades shut.)
NARRATOR (low, reflective):
They’ll clean the carpets.
They’ll retune the demo guitars.
But they’ll never forget him.
Mountain.
A man. A myth. A natural disaster
>business is booming bucko

I have Duncan distortions in my charvel, which I’m not too fond of. They’re ok for metal but everything else they’re a little harsh. I guess my options are to go with like a JB/59 combo or possibly get some nice vintage pafs or something. Do you think it’ll sound like a Les Paul if I put botique pafs in it or should I just go with the JB/59?
>>127170712real pafs weren't potted so the only way for it to actually sound like a 59 is to have microphonic pickups
>>127170712PAFs won't sound like a LP in a Charvel. But it might be what you're looking for (less harsh).
>>127170735I just mean like some bare knuckle or other paf style pickups. I like the way the jb’s sound in a charvel but I feel like it’s a waste of money to buy something that comes as a factory option in my guitar. Wish I’d have waited to find one with the JB/59 combo. The distortion bridge is way too high gain and bright and the neck pickup is muddy.
>>127170744Other problem is it has a Floyd and this guitar has the larger tremolo bridge pickup. They make a JB trem version so that’s probably what I’ll have to go with. I know with my old charvel hard tail that had JB/59 I could do everything on it from pop punk to jazz and classic rock no problem. These pickups as soon as I venture outside of hard rock they sound like dogwater.
>>127170793>I know with my old charvel hard tail that had JB/59 I could do everything on it from pop punk to jazz and classic rock no problem. These pickups as soon as I venture outside of hard rock they sound like dogwater.Stick with that then. Probably tempting to test out other stuff, but you already know these work for you.
>>127170835Looks like my luthier will swap them out for 70 bucks. I know I could probably do it myself but I don’t even know if or where I have a soldering iron or how complicated it is since I have a coil split and no load volume pot.

>>127171590i've heard conflicting stories on the success of the volute so i can't say either way
Even if you set breaks aside, the headstock angle being so deep is just worse for tuning stability.
>>127171648not really. the problem is the angle coming out of the backside of the nut going to the d and g strings. just compensate the back side of the nut and you won't have any problems. too shallow of a break angle like a fender A string causes problems but having a steep break angle does nothing but put more pressure on the saddle and nut
The volute on Martin 28 series (and the blingy stuff based on the 28, like the D-45, etc) is purely to not piss off traditionalists. They're just like Gibson guys here. And they do buy them. They don't demand and bitch for the sake of it. So Martin doesn't see the change it. I guess just like Gibson.
Nothing else Martin makes has a volute. Never has. I mean D-18s and such.

>>127171866I guess because the D-35 (or D-36) are sort of their own thing too.. They have a 3 piece back.
>>127171891Also to add...
Even though the D-35 was a high number, it was actually made with budgeting in mind originally when they wanted to salvage as much rosewood as they could (Brazilian in those days). So they used small pieces for a 3 piece back. But maybe that made it less "fancy" in Martin's mind.. so it didn't get the fancy diamond volute. Just a guess.

>>127172402That guitar is hideous. You did yourself a favor. Honeybursts are awesome.
>>127173331Yes, but no just use a digitech drop or whammy. I keep mine in standard and polyphonic pitch shift for drop tunings. You would never notice unless it’s like d standard or lower. I’ll have to get a second guitar for drop d etc though this thing is a pain in the ass to drop the e string on. It’s floating so I can’t d-tuna.

>>127173570No. They look cool and sound cool but honestly play like shit, are heavy, and really uncomfortable to play sitting. I do want one though just for the toan. Nothing else sounds like a Les Paul.
>>127173315For me it's the OCD.
>>127173577You have to cut your nut for the string gauge you’re using. If you’re dead set on running heavier than factory gauge strings then you need to have the nut set up and filed properly. Unless you think you can do it yourself, but you own a squier so prolly not.

>>127173616Kiesels are shit. They were shit when they were carvin now they’re even more shit.
>>127173524Very tempting but half the reason I got another guitar was to have one with lower tuning to save breaking strings all the time.
>>127173654Put one in drop d and one in e standard and use a drop pedal. That pretty much covers 99% of everything except stuff that’s in weird alternate tunings like dadgad
Keisel derangement syndrome
>>127173654You can pitch shift up with the whammy pedal too if you want to keep it in e flat and play songs in e standard. There are certain songs like man I feel like a woman and jump where I’ll pitch shift to e sharp instead of using a capo and having to transcribe everything. Capos are homosexual
How loud do you bros play? I couldn't stand having the sound coming out of my amp be a different pitch from the actual strings themselves.
>>127173718gotta have the notes rumble my toant
>>127173570I’ve never played a Les Paul that left me feeling like I ever wanted one until I played a Junior then a Special. The simple slab body Les Pauls do it for me while normal ones I just don’t like.

>>127172402Had a Les Paul Studio custom from the same year in that color. Miss that motherfucker.
>>127173718I play with studio monitoring headphones at around the same maximum volume of my airpods which are set to 90db. Just loud enough to sound good, not loud enough to do any hearing damage. Sometimes I catch myself turning it up a little too high though. I really should figure out how to monitor the decibel levels tho. I’m 38 and don’t want to lose any more hearing or get worse tinnitus.
>>127174031Beautiful color. I'm going to keep that on my list for when BTC hits $1M.
>>127174116I'm 38 too and quit using headphones around a decade ago since my tinnitus was already a bitch.

Fuck. I have eight guitars. I thought I heard that Sweetwater gives decent store credit if you sell your shit through them, is that true? Should I just dump em at GC? I don't want to get robbed if I were to play them on craigslist; I don't have facebook for marketplace.
Can you get away with just doing power chords and certain riffs well?
>>127174177Uh not that I know that work as well. Neural dsp works well if you’re using amp sims. It’s expensive here too like 250 for the regular pedal and 400 for the whammy.
>>127170285Johnny Ramone and Cobain both make my top 10 guitarist list.
>>127174795angus young, any mississippi delta blues
>>127174176I’m thinking I should order a decibel meter from scamazon and check my headphones before I play with them. The problem is normalizing all the channels and media (songs or whatever I’m playing along to) so they don’t go over a certain db. I have to play with headphones I live in a condo. I rarely go past 1/4 volume on the headphones out of my interface but who knows how loud it actually is. I know I don’t get any hearing damage alerts on Apple so I just try to match the volume I listen to music at which is usually 2 clicks below the 90db cap I set on my AirPod pros.

>>127172818you could try using shitty practice combos, the little ones with an 8 or 10" speaker and just send a stupid amount of signal into it. find a cheap peavey bandit combo if theres one nearby for cheap. that was a pretty common amp they used
>>127174116you can play louder, just not for hours.
"safe" levels are 85dB for 8 hours. every 3 dB above that, halve the time.
so like 97dB is fine for half an hour
>>127174886the gojira one has a great model of a whammy if you have an expression pedal handy and like the digital artifact-y sound, a bunch of the heavy ones just have a straight detune knob. if you just use that and none of the other parts of the plugin, you can run it into anything else you normally use. having said that, the plugins can produce some great sounds
you guys ever have a technique that you can perform on a fundamental level but no matter how much you practice it you don't seem to get better, and it just never comes together for you? for me it's slap. i can play rhcp songs but shit like primus is impossible. been at this shit for 3 months
>>127168437sweetwater has really great customer service, I'll applaud them for trying to give you the "personal" experience of old brick and mortar stores unlike 99.99% of modern online retail where there's no human element at all in any aspect of the customer journey.
>>127174323The thing with these advanced teachers is they assume you already know the basics. If you aren't already an intermediate player don't bother, they aren't going to hold your hand, if you can't see what someones playing just by looking at their hand you aren't ready for advanced lessons.

why is this allowed
>>127175323Why would you select the brightest position and then immediately try to cuck it with a tone knob? Are you retarded? the bridge is meant to be completely open

>>127175424Why would you want your guitar to sound like shit? I have tone control over my bridge pickup on my SG and it sounds like dogshit if it isn't dimed.
>>127175373>the bridge is meant to be completely openlol no, every pickup needs tone adjustment. thats why gibsons have 4 to 6 knobs.
>>127175317Ive noticed there are a lot of famous guitarists who give online lessons for like $100 to $200 per hour. Its kind of crazy to not look for the absolute best guitar teachers instead of just going for whoever teaches at your local guitar shop
>>127175535The best players are self taught. Maybe a couple tips from their peers but never a "lesson".
>>127175515I mean they can have all the knobs they want if you turn them down from 10 the guitar tone suffers massively. Pedals are expecting the full tone, amps are expecting the full output.
>>127175557Suffers massively? Maybe if you're trying to sound like hot ass. The knobs are as important as any amp EQ.

>>127175883Yeah try a G&L or Suhr instead
>>127175557>The best players are self taught. Maybe a couple tips from their peers but never a "lesson".Im aware that many famous guitarists made their careers by learning 3 chords, its referred to as "3 chords and the truth". but the world is full of bands that can only crank out the same riffs over and over, so I dont recommend anyone be self taught unless they are learning for fun or enjoy being a poor professional musician with zero prospects for fame
>>127175918>prospects for fameI don't recommend guitar in any capacity for that. Even the "big names" in modern guitar are tiny compared to what used to be possible. Instrument and music in general is dead in the water culturally.
