I mean literally what the fuck were they thinking? A load of these cavernous bands get the same effect, Kvadrat and Sacrificial Vein from last year are the same. Abyssal is a big name that really can't seem to get production down either. The whole sound of these "cavernous" productions are white noise simulations for naps or bedtime, its like they think that they won't sound vicious without a "wall of sound". Portal's Ion album should be a mandatory listen to anyone who thinks sloppy production is anything more than a crutch for hacks.

I get the concept that bands want to sound like their music is coming from this huge space. But it gets dull very quickly because you have this static element riding over the whole mix that doesn't feel tied to the dynamics of what they're playing. Guitars typically only have significant low end when palm muting, which makes the speaker push tons of air. I think caveshit production involves adding that low end in post, and probably using a multiband compressor so it's extremely consistent. Portal is a good counterexample, because the noise is more downstream from what they're playing. It sounds 'sharp'.

Everybody knows AI is now the true metal and probably self aware at this stage. The public have the 'basic' version which is probably years behind what the glowies have. I'm always surprised that every song is different even if I use the same prompt, but it does follow certain structures. The 'Afterburner' chord progression for hair metal for instance. It's literally better than most mainstream slop nowadays though, which is full of low talent industry plants.

I'm too much a brainlet at physics to explain it, but playing palm-muted chords produces a shitload of low end resonance, which reflects in the sound coming out of the speakers. Low frequencies have a longer wave length and are physically felt more, a low B on a 7 string guitar has a fundamental close to 60 hz which is 18.3 feet long. This is also why you can hear bass through walls. To produce these frequencies, the amp speakers themselves have to move larger distances, that's what I mean by "pushing air".

Yeah, the amount of noise in the guitar is dependent on what they're actually playing. With Portal it's even in the way they pick the strings, the angle of pick attack causing that 'chirping' kind of sound during faster parts. Not that I mind guitar tones being augmented with effects (pedals or post-processing). I think there are ways to achieve more noise while retaining dynamics, but I haven't figured out a good way yet.

Maybe, I'm not sure if they need to in order to get their sound. It doesn't sound like that old Albini stuff where he was using sheet metal for a pick. I also just found one of Illogium's old posts on sevenstring where he says this:

Yeah the best way is going to be holistic sound design, instead of forcing guitar to be something it isn't. But still, I've been having fun with modern distortion plugins like JMG Cyberdrive which let me get tones more abrasive than I thought possible. I'll have to vocaroo something later.

Yeah, I really hope that's just a demo with basically scratch drums and they make an album which sounds better.
Kvist could definitely be an influence, I never intentionally copped their style but I listened to them a lot when I was younger. I think you'll enjoy their album since it has those lower pitch BM vocals we've chatted about, and uses less 'beaten path' chords and melodies than most 2nd wave stuff.

Lol, finding metal artists on forums is always a laugh. I remember Vindsval from BAN is actually a moderator on one site, although he doesn't seem to post anymore. Wonder if I could find Hasjarl on HeilSatan.org or something where he loves to discuss his love for the blues.

Their album is a lot different than what you linked, more traditional second wave, even has those dreadful punky drum beats that earlier period liked to use. Nice and bassed though, surprisingly clear and loud. The vocals are in a better style, but hes asleep at the wheel, delivers all his lines in mostly the same manner, very little emotion. I really should get a microphone and do a cover of something one day, just to prove I could do better than everyone else. Maybe this week I will get a SM58 for shits and gigs.

I can't really say Kvist were good, but for the disney era of BM, its good. I'll throw this in my pile of bassed black metal alongside Furia, Taake, and Kaevum.
