>>127168910Another third wave band that can't understand production, and the music sure isn't worth suffering through that aspect either. The worst however are the vocals, playing the role of background white noise, another talentless hack slapping distortion over himself to hide how boring he is. I swear I've heard this exact same vocal sound on like 80% of the latest third wave bands, maybe its just the same guy being passed around like a fifth rate corner whore because no one can find a proper one kek.
Verdict: Kick vocalist out for someone else, or turn into an instrumental band. Also just hire GG for your production since this was foul to listen to.

>>127169247>a bloat in the 200 hz region which sounds "big" but rather pillowy and soft.I mean literally what the fuck were they thinking? A load of these cavernous bands get the same effect, Kvadrat and Sacrificial Vein from last year are the same. Abyssal is a big name that really can't seem to get production down either. The whole sound of these "cavernous" productions are white noise simulations for naps or bedtime, its like they think that they won't sound vicious without a "wall of sound". Portal's Ion album should be a mandatory listen to anyone who thinks sloppy production is anything more than a crutch for hacks.
>Anything with "void" in it is usually vacuous. Was trying to think of a single counter example, but there is nothing I can think of. Honestly though I still think even a generic HORRIFIC TERROR VOID or whatever is better than Deathspell Omega. I can't even say DsO's name to people irl because it sounds like a parody.

BLASTING TRVE KVLT EDITION
>>127169502I get the concept that bands want to sound like their music is coming from this huge space. But it gets dull very quickly because you have this static element riding over the whole mix that doesn't feel tied to the dynamics of what they're playing. Guitars typically only have significant low end when palm muting, which makes the speaker push tons of air. I think caveshit production involves adding that low end in post, and probably using a multiband compressor so it's extremely consistent. Portal is a good counterexample, because the noise is more downstream from what they're playing. It sounds 'sharp'.
>I can't even say DsO's name to people irl because it sounds like a parody. Rofl, tale as old as time.

Everybody knows AI is now the true metal and probably self aware at this stage. The public have the 'basic' version which is probably years behind what the glowies have. I'm always surprised that every song is different even if I use the same prompt, but it does follow certain structures. The 'Afterburner' chord progression for hair metal for instance. >>127169637>I get the concept that bands want to sound like their music is coming from this huge space.Honestly I never really felt like they even manage to sound like that, usually reverb creates the sound of space - just as yelling into a real cavern would do. Personally I think its just the same mentality as the br00tal tards, a race to the bottom for "extremity" that leads whatever process to being a shallow gimmick.
>makes the speaker push tons of airWhat effect does that have in relation to what we are speaking about? Genuinely curious.
>downstream from what they're playingDo you mean the noise comes from the way they play? Or that it is more tied to pedals and such, rather than being added in as an after effect in fruity loops, like I assume these bands are using with the level of quality these albums possess.
>AbigorAbigor at least might fly over most people, but Gorguts is a great example of cringe inducing names to say outloud IRL. Both Luc and Hasjarl really should have changed the name after they left their simple traditional roots. Personally I really don't want anyone thinking I have any relation to people who listen to Cannibal Corpse or Cradle of Filth. Simple one words like Thorns or Mayhem are fine, unknowable names like Jute Gyte or Ehnahre are also good.
>>127169696>figured out the early Thorns toneSnorre literally has an entire video dedicated to his early tones, don't think there was much "figuring" out going on.

>>127170344>What effect does that have in relation to what we are speaking about? Genuinely curious.I'm too much a brainlet at physics to explain it, but playing palm-muted chords produces a shitload of low end resonance, which reflects in the sound coming out of the speakers. Low frequencies have a longer wave length and are physically felt more, a low B on a 7 string guitar has a fundamental close to 60 hz which is 18.3 feet long. This is also why you can hear bass through walls. To produce these frequencies, the amp speakers themselves have to move larger distances, that's what I mean by "pushing air".
>Do you mean the noise comes from the way they play? Yeah, the amount of noise in the guitar is dependent on what they're actually playing. With Portal it's even in the way they pick the strings, the angle of pick attack causing that 'chirping' kind of sound during faster parts. Not that I mind guitar tones being augmented with effects (pedals or post-processing). I think there are ways to achieve more noise while retaining dynamics, but I haven't figured out a good way yet.

The Acacia Strain are some of the actual WORST deathcore on the market, with only Chelsea Grin competing with them for that shitty title.
Suicide Silence are fun but they aren't good by any stretch.
That Make Them Bleed album is one of the better coreshit albums but it ultimately still only has 2 or 3 actually good tracks.
Methwitch sucks fucking a-hole.
Rings of Saturn are memeshit wank for tryhards.

>>127170669>that's what I mean by "pushing air".Ah alright. Yeah the low end emphasis definitely seems to be their goal, br00tal fags are the same way, makes sense that bands like Mitochondrion cross the genre border between brutal and caverncore as if it never existed.
>the angle of pick attack causing that 'chirping' kind of sound during faster partsI've also wondered if he uses a metal pick, there are times that just sound like metal scrapping on each other.
>I think there are ways to achieve more noise while retaining dynamicsFor guitars that's pretty hard, but I'm a big fan of industrial or noise being added as if they were part of the instruments. I don't even really care if there are real guitars at all tbqh, Mick Gorton's synth shit has the same effect as guitars in my eyes.
>>127171018>It's not like they had labels to pleaseI just think they didn't want to lose their built up fanbase/audience by swapping names, I cannot imagine someone like Hasjarl doesn't regret picking DsO as the band's name everday though lol. Fame and fortune changing, thinking of a band as a brand leads to situations like this.
>I hope he just releases something, soon. I think we've already discussed it, but I already know it won't be anything great, he never progressed his sound in 25 years since the S/T and seems to be playing into it.
>KvistThis sounded bretty good guitar wise, but drums are always a lost instrument in melodic music, seemingly there just to generate unneeded noise. Guy doesn't really seem like he knows what to do either, but I guess its less boring than the pure metronome blast spam.
This Kvist band an influence on you at all? I haven'tlistened to them, might do so later, but I do like your melodic guitar work in general, which is bretty rare for me in metal.

>>127171321>You take dissonant metal more seriously than the musicians did themselvesNo one takes his music more seriously than Hasjarl, its literally his religious quest in musical form. He started off making dogshit music and created his ESL band name while he was copying second wave slop, in fact it might not even be his naming, the name could have been something Shaxul created since that baIdkuck metaltard was still in the band at the time.

>>127171321>>127172588Adding on to what I said, DsO as a band was created before Hasjarl became religiously involved with his music and wasn't serious about it, nor was it dissonant at the time. Taking the music seriously as its own ethos and force is what drove the poser ba1die Shaxul away. Only Dissonant metal is real.

>ok acoustic intro ruined by the awkward transition at 1:04>the progression from acoustic to electric guitars gets needlessly drawn out from 1:04 to 1:48>the riff that has gotten boring after being played repeatedly for the first 2 and a half minutes finally changes to the chorus, only to quickly change back to the same fucking riff after 15 seconds. >song finally seems to be ramping up at 3:44, but just unsatisfyingly plods along at the same pace>ok solo starts at 3:58, but it's ruined by an absolute shit tone. 4:46 is just earrape>at 5:35 the song finally ends...oh wait nevermind>6:45 and we're with the SAME boring riff from the start>7:18 and the vocalist says "the finger of scOOOOORN" like 7 times>at 8:12 they to do the 'epic slow ending', as if the whole song hasn't been slow alreadyAll of this and I haven't even mentioned the shite vocalist, who's doing an abysmal Halford impression. I could've listened to 2 actually good songs in those 8 minutes.

nu metal is the only metal genre
heavy metal is just metal before they perfected it, nu metal is perfected
thrash metal is trash metal, unlike slipknot of nu metal.
black metal is just edgy sissy shit, they cant handle the real black metal which is slipknot
death metal is just what happens when you try to make nu metal more brutal but its really not brutal enough, slipknot is simply superior
doom metal is snoozefest for 40 year old dads, its not as good as nu metal
war metal is unnecessary, theres plenty of nu metal songs that talk about war
speed metal unnecessary, lots of nu metal songs are fast.
power metal unnecessary, lots of nu metal songs are powerful.
glam metal unnecessary, lots of nu metal band members are sexy.

>>127172511>I've also wondered if he uses a metal pick, there are times that just sound like metal scrapping on each other.Maybe, I'm not sure if they need to in order to get their sound. It doesn't sound like that old Albini stuff where he was using sheet metal for a pick. I also just found one of Illogium's old posts on sevenstring where he says this:
>Yes we pick very hard with 2.0 picks alot of the time, we use alot of vibrato when holding the notes aswell as bending strings on stretched chords. One of the key ingredients is to always use thick strings so that the tension is always very tight. He also points out that they use different amps/effects on each record. So those "tone is in the fingers" boomers were right, in a way.
>For guitars that's pretty hard, but I'm a big fan of industrial or noise being added as if they were part of the instruments. I don't even really care if there are real guitars at all tbqh, Mick Gorton's synth shit has the same effect as guitars in my eyes. Yeah the best way is going to be holistic sound design, instead of forcing guitar to be something it isn't. But still, I've been having fun with modern distortion plugins like JMG Cyberdrive which let me get tones more abrasive than I thought possible. I'll have to vocaroo something later.
>This sounded bretty good guitar wise, but drums are always a lost instrument in melodic music, seemingly there just to generate unneeded noise. Yeah, I really hope that's just a demo with basically scratch drums and they make an album which sounds better.
Kvist could definitely be an influence, I never intentionally copped their style but I listened to them a lot when I was younger. I think you'll enjoy their album since it has those lower pitch BM vocals we've chatted about, and uses less 'beaten path' chords and melodies than most 2nd wave stuff.

>>127173029>like that old Albini stuff where he was using sheet metal for a pickI hadn't ever bothered listening to his stuff honestly, this was neat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4VQPo_gQF4. Reminds me of the early Sonic Youth stuff and no wave in general. Drumsticks are pick too right?
>llogium's old posts on sevenstringLol, finding metal artists on forums is always a laugh. I remember Vindsval from BAN is actually a moderator on one site, although he doesn't seem to post anymore. Wonder if I could find Hasjarl on HeilSatan.org or something where he loves to discuss his love for the blues.
Picking really hard might make sense though, strings vibing into the frets with some strange pedal setup might explain a lot of the metal sounds I hear.
>I'll have to vocaroo something later.Do it!
>KvistTheir album is a lot different than what you linked, more traditional second wave, even has those dreadful punky drum beats that earlier period liked to use. Nice and bassed though, surprisingly clear and loud. The vocals are in a better style, but hes asleep at the wheel, delivers all his lines in mostly the same manner, very little emotion. I really should get a microphone and do a cover of something one day, just to prove I could do better than everyone else. Maybe this week I will get a SM58 for shits and gigs.
I can't really say Kvist were good, but for the disney era of BM, its good. I'll throw this in my pile of bassed black metal alongside Furia, Taake, and Kaevum.
